Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
Browns could roll over some of their cap space, and they have a lot, and franchise Cousins next year. That guarantees them 2 years of Kirk and 2 years to get a big fat contract worked out. I could see a trade to them just as easily as to San Fran.

The media HATE Snyder so much that they just can't wait to post any type of bad news about the Skins whenever they get a chance. We know that KC didn't ask for a trade - as posted by several 'sources' - and we know that he contacted Pryor and others to start off-season sessions to get acquainted with them. Plus, he's having a baby this fall and has a great place in town. He wants to stay, the Skins want to keep him, and they will get a deal done. Stop listening to the talking heads and twitter junkies who just need lots of clicks to keep them employed. |

Per @MaryKayCabot: #Browns not expected to make run at #Redskins Kirk Cousins, but 3 other teams have & were shot down, source says
Thank God, this all sounds good. I just think Kirk is such a professional. He responded really well to the misinformation. I am starting to crawl back from the edge. If we have Kirk going into the season this team is still in good shape. I think we can chalk this all up to an unsurprisingly mismanaged personnel situation and potentially malicious public parting, but I do think the rumors were piled on to continue the "Redskins Front Office sucks" narrative. So, maybe now we can recover and only lose out I the talent evaluation department, and that too can possibly be remedied. That said, I can't help but pause because I do have a couple of questions about this situation. Why was this situation handled this way? If I had a high level employee that was skilled but has a substance abuse issue (and was honest about it upon hire) and relapsed I would first send him home and simply say publicly that he was out on leave. Period. No stupid personal story. Next I'd offer treatment (honestly I'd be surprised if they could fire him without offering). If he accepted I would say he was on long term leave for personal reasons (and he could comment if/when he wanted. If he refused, I would have a discussion with them about how to handle his termination (negotiate a termination agreement - compensation, timing, official documentation, public communication, etc.). If he cooperated in negotiations a I would suggest him remaining "on leave for personal reasons" until a less crucial time, and make a quiet announcement with an agreed upon official statement. If he was not cooperative, I suppose it would be an immediate termination without publicly releasing a reason. So this could mean so many things, but here's what seem to be the prevailing possibilities: 1. There were other underlying reasons. A power struggle over a Kirk as some have suggested maybe. They silenced him, fired him, and dragged him through the mud to make themselves seem less at fault. 2. They tried to go through all the proper protocol, he was a mess, was unwilling to seek treatment, unwilling to negotiate termination, and they had to fire him immediately. And then a) The FO felt too exposed so they purposely leaked statements smearing him. b) someone spoke out of turn. 3) They are incredibly stupid and incompetent. Didn't know how to handle the situation. Tried to hide what was going on, couldn't work things out peacefully with Scot, fired him and then (see 2a and 2b). So, if it's 1. Then it is more of the slimy, unprofessional, and chaotic behavior that Snyder has poisoned this organization with, and as others have expressed, Im sick of it and don't know how much more I can watch a respected and beloved franchise dragged into the same cesspool of classlessness that I always expected of Dallas. 2a. Less loathsome, but still slimy. My bet for most likely. 3a. Frustrating and loathsome and one of the more likely in my mind. 3b. Not loathsome, but frustrating and inexcusable. 2b. Is the only somewhat excuseable scenario, but even then. How can you not keep shit out of he media? How can you not release a statement condemning the leak and apologizing? Who the hell is accountable for these mishandled situations. Maybe this is the wrong place for all this, but I can finally return from the ledge, express my frustration, and thank god we at least have a professional QB that can handle his shit. At least for now... |

Could it be possible that BOTH sides were to blame like you said in number 2..in that case The skins had to make a move..Why has Scott not said anything? I would be interested in his story.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
If we don't get a long term with cousins and he walks next year...worse than the rg3 trade.
Because we would have a proven qb and still couldn't retain him. And then we had a opportunity to get something for him through a trade but because dan Snyder is a bitch bc 49er coach is a shanny, we chose to not to move him... |

He probably signed a non-disclosure agreement when he was hired. |
Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
The Browns are not going to have a chance to get Cousins. Not unless they were willing to give up a king's ransom, and even I don't believe the Browns would do that. That said, I have no doubt that these "rumors" were leaked in order to make Cousins a little nervous that he could be shipped off to Cleveland, in order to force his hand a little quicker with the negotiations. That said, Cousins has pretty much said that the tag dictates how his agent is going to negotiate, so if the Redskins would just simply offer close to that number, I think Cousins signs. Why wait until July 14th? Just get it done now so that this is no longer a distraction.

I think we should def use this as leverage to get a deal done. Also many folks reported 3 teams called about Cousins....this is nothing but good news. |

Agreed. For all the reporting and columns written about how Cousins has all of this leverage (and he still does, don't get me wrong), what was assumed is that the only trade partner the Redskins had was San Francisco. Therefore, even if they wanted to trade him, San Fran would dictate trade compensation. But seeing how other teams (even though they are nameless right now) have been rumored to be in the mix, and Cleveland being named (although I think it's merely a rumor to force Cousins' hand), I think we're starting to see some leverage go toward the Redskins. |

What I meant about changing my mind about Kirk, was that I thought he had this attitude that he wanted to leave the team because he did not feel wanted and whatnot. It sounds like this "wanting to leave" may have been overblown or it may have been a negotiation tactic from his camp. Who knows, but it looks like things are somewhat normal and they are just doing the typical negotiations. In the end, I don't see what's so terrible about the team moving forward. I feel that with some of the acquisitions we've gotten and getting Kirk back under center, I expect us to be competitive again in the upcoming season. |

but it better get done period. After this bullshit with McC, I better not hear any fucking excuses from Bruce. Get it done period We don't need to extend the QB track record with Bruce/Danny anymore. Lets end it with a good deal for Cousins. My general feeling right now is it does get done. There's nothing to stop Cousins from saying he doesn't want to play for Washington. I don't think him stating such would hinder his leverage. The fact that he came out and denied that he demanded a trade and still spoke favorable with his relationship with the Redskins tells me that he just wants a long term contract. If it's the Redskins, fine, if it's the 49ers, fine. If it's the Browns......damn!!!! LOL! |

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
I'n not sure that everyone here realizes how much the situation with Kirk has changed since he signed his franchise tag contract. Now, the Redskins can trade him to any other NFL team without his permission. The Redskins have no obligation to allow talks between Kirk and the other team to work out a long-term deal. They can simply trade Kirk and his one year $24M contract to another team as long as the other team is willing to take on his contract as it now stands. I don't know how realistic such a deal would be but the Skins could do it if they wished to do so.
It looks like the Skins want a long-term deal with Kirk but if the situation were to change they could trade him in a New York minute to a willing trade partner. I apologize if I seem to you to be acting like a know-it-all or Captain Obvious. |

I didn't read that from the podcast. And if a deal was done verbally it'd be done on paper a few days later. I do think coming out of that conversation (referenced in the podcast) there is a mutual understanding that the Redskins intend to negotiate in good faith for a long term deal. I think they'll get it done by July 14, but there's still a lot of dancing that remains. |

"There's this silly notion that maybe the Browns would trade for him and then tag him next year. Ridiculous. Why would they pay to take on a headache like that?"
Because it's the Browns. I don't see him getting traded anywhere, but that would be the 2nd most likely spot as of now. They have cap space galore to roll over next year if they have to tag him again. |
Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
If I was Cleveland and traded for him I'd tell him right upfront that he's getting tagged again next year too. So you're our QB for sure for the next 2 years at least.
But trading is steep, if I was them I'm drafting best QB available at #12. You walk away with Myles Garrett, and a possible franchise qb. I'd say that's a good 1st round. |

Someone's going to have to blow the Redskins away with a trade offer. Kind of like an RG3 type of trade. Then of course agree to a deal, just not going to happen.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
For people that are freaking out about these types of negotiations, take a look a the negotiation history between Von Miller and the Broncos last year. It went right down to the wire, but the deal got done. There was a bit of drama (there was the whole "Von Miller cropping Elway out of one of his pics on Instagram" episode), some details about the negotiation leaked to the media, and there was a lot of back and forth.
Sure it'd be great if the deal got done right away, but like most of these types of negotiations, I think it will go right up until July. |

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
I am glad that KC straightened out his position. I think he plays this year on the FT unless the Skins do a record setting deal, and maybe they will. His most telling part to me was his desire to see what he is worth as a free agent. I think had the Skins let him negotiate with teams under the non-exclusive tag he would have felt that he was getting market value, but by making it exclusive he knows it sets him up for a 1 year 33 million price next year, at that point he will have played for 77million over three years. Any long term deal has to match that structure (25m apy). I got the feeling he is more than willing to play by the FT rules until the Skins let him see his market value or pay him over what he thinks the market would pay him since he can't.prove it because the Skins didn't let him. For percentages
Before draft 55% trade 20% LTD 25% FT After draft 60% FT 30% LTD 10% Trade Sent from my SM-G935T using Tapatalk |

I really don't understand why the Skins haven't put a decent offer out there for him. Put the ball in his court, make KC explain why he's not signing a fair deal. Give him a good guarantee 22-24M with escalators that allow him to be the highest paid QB in the league, if he earns it. |
Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
Are people really freaking out over this? I haven't really noticed any behavior on here that would lead me to believe people are freaking out per se. I think the largely shared sentiment is that people are just tired of hearing about it. Trade the man. Get it over with. Sign the man. Get it over with. Either way, we're just done. I know all about the deals are done in the 11th hour (so to speak) and that's just the way it works. That's great. But as Redskins fans, we want to look forward to the next season and feel good about our team and support Kirk Cousins, or we want the band-aid pulled off so we have time to mentally prepare ourselves for what could be a not so great season with a backup quarterback. I think that's pretty reasonable and logical to consider.
That being said, I have all the confidence in the world that Cousins signs a long term deal with the Redskins. All the business stuff aside, he's still a competitor and I'm sure he wants to be somewhere where he has the best chance at the post season and a Super Bowl. Between the 49ers and Browns right now, the Redskins clearly are much further ahead. |
Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
He's just being honest. Shouldn't we be more frustrated with the team not committing to him?
Point Blank yes. KC is going down the path the team said they wanted to go in relation to the FT. He hasn't done a Josh Norman and refused to sign. As Bruce Allen said, it really is simple, and if they wanted it done, they would put an offer on the table that is comparable to the guarantees they are giving him by using the FT. At the same token 44M for up to 36 games, is a hell of a lot of money, and it does boggle the mind that he would not sign for even more guaranteed if it were in front of him. |
