Re: Skins getting heat again over name issue
I'm incredibly tired of mostly white liberals telling me what is offensive to not only Native Americans but to my own race. The rebel flag? Pretty obvious why that offends people. The term Redskin? SMFH!!! They don't even know why Marshall named the team Redskins. I swear I hope Snyder sticks to his guns and doesn't cave in to phony ass pressure from the media. The pandering that is going on is pathetic.

Re: Skins getting heat again over name issue
Just add a new definition in the dictionary for the football team that plays in DC. That's the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the term, and it's been that way for a very long time.
Language and words evolve over time. Nobody is using Redskins in a derogatory way anymore. |

Now I'm starting to think there is a good possibility Snyder will have to change the name.. Snyder probably already started looking at the yachts magazine for a second yacht and he will need the money.
https://www.foxnews.com/sports/redskins-move-new-stadium-team-name-changes-report It seems like the Federal Gov't is now also trying to force the name change. If I am reading [emoji433] this article correctly, it sounds like the the Skins won't be able to move into any other stadium [emoji909] until the team name is changed. So now unfortunately Snyder is getting it from all sides. And I predict that if the advertisers and the governments gang up, the NFL itself will be the next group to force the name change. As for new names for the team, Dan Snyder already trademarked the name Washington Warriors back in the early '00 when he flirted with idea of owning an Arena Football [emoji458] team. So the transition would be natural. Also the team can bring back the Burgundy Arrowhead helmets and go with the really nice uniforms that the team wore for the 70th Anniversary in 2002. Of course I would prefer for the team to retain the name Redskins, but it seems to be a forgone conclusion that the Redskins name will be going away at some point soon. And at this point I can live with the Washington Warriors and least the team can have a nice set of uniforms. I honestly don't care if the team changes names, there are bigger issues going on in the world/in my life to care about this. I just hope that the people who are very adamant about changing the name are as adamant about supporting Native American communities, which are suffering in this pandemic.

Would you say, "good morning redskin!" to her. This guy walks into your store, "How can I help you redskin"
Sunny, there isn't anybody out there using the word Redskin to refer to Native American as a slur anymore. I don't doubt that at some point in history, it was a slur. But unlike certain slurs that are still used today, nobody is using Redskin as one. You say Redskin and the first thing that comes to mind is DC football. And I still believe it's a vocal minority of Native Americans that oppose the name, and the rest either don't care and there's def. another minority that use it as a term of pride. They're probably not as vocal about it because of the many issues plaguing the Native American community today that need attention more though. But the bottom line here isn't how Native Americans feel, whether in support or opposition to the name. Like anything else, it's the almighty dollar. If the Redskins biggest corporate sponsors put pressure on Dan to change the name, and anywhere he tries to go to build a new stadium tells him he will only get tax dollars to help build it if he changes the name, then at some point the name is going to change. Fucking with a rich man's money is the only way you're going to get their attention. |

No, because it's not 100 years ago and I, along with literally everybody else, is not prejudiced against Native Americans. Go find me any group of people anywhere who are still actively encouraging slaughter against Native Americans and maybe I'll reconsider. |

Re: Skins getting heat again over name issue
Just my opinion, but if I were Dan Snyder and I did change the name it wouldn't be anything that has to do with Indians at all. The Native Americans that don't see it as racist need to speak up about how they feel. Taking down statues that have been up for years. Where is this going to end. It's not. The majority of people don't see it as a racist name, but the people who do speak out and the one's who don't feel it is racist, don't. Just my opinion.

Re: Skins getting heat again over name issue
If you are at a bar, and you overhear someone say “some redskins just walked in,” would you think they were talking about a football player, or a Native American? Would ANYONE who heard that think they were talking about anything other than a football player?
There was a time in the past where the word was a slur. But, unlike the n-word, LITERALLY NO ONE uses the word as a slur anymore. NO ONE. The “racial slur” definition of the word is extinct. The overwhelming majority of pressure to change the name comes from white liberal men who, instead of doing anything meaningful to help minorities who are suffering REAL injustice, instead want to write a blog or tweet about the how awful the redskins team name is. It’s a way for them to assuage their “white guilt” from the comfort of home without actually doing anything. Well, I’m a very left leaning liberal white man who says this is absolute bull shit. Re: Skins getting heat again over name issue
I defend the name, but to be clear on where I stand regardless of my affinity for the name I recognize it's likely inevitable that it will be changed. When the corporate sponsors hop on the bandwagon, the tide is turning and even though it's 50/50 whether Dan ignores this in hopes it goes away in time, I think enough people and companies have hopped on to make keeping the name a losing battle. This has become bigger than a small minority of Native Americans being vocal about it, they've gained the support of almost the entire Democratic party (myself and a few others excluded), and the support of local/federal officials who hold the keys to RFK, and now they've gained the support of Fedex and Nike (who is no longer selling Redskins merch on their website). It's hard to defend something when public pressure becomes overwhelmingly negative, and while I don't think we've reached that point yet I do think the pressure is steady rising.
And for those of you think we're going to just change the name, but keep the logos and the colors and continue with a new Native American theme, you're crazy. Native Americans are not going to sign off on anything having to do with them. The new name will have to be a clean break, something totally different to get the sponsors to come back. Guessing the name and colors (if Dan is starting to reconsider ofc) will be something patriotic/DC related. |
What about the N.A. reservations that use it as a term of pride?
And some clearly do not view it that way. There are members of the African American community that use the N word too, but that doesn’t make it less offensive. Again, my view is that there are people that find it offensive (and I don’t see any need to debate the relative proportion of the community that does), and that’s easily enough for me to say there’s no need to use it. I don’t get the need to defend the name. It’s the least important thing about the team to me. Heck, I care more about the use of burgundy and gold than the name. At this point, it feels inevitable (and I believe it should) and folks will have to decide whether a name change is enough to change their loyalty. Personally, I don’t get that, but so be it. That the stadium sponsor has made the request is going to be really problematic for Dan, and the FedEx CEO is a part owner of the team. This all seems inevitable and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a new team name soon. Or at least an announcement that the team will commit to one soon. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
