Re: Haskins released

Dolphins at 3 overall seems like they may be willing to trade down. They seem to like holding lots of picks but do already have 2 1st rounders and at least 2 2nd rounders from the Tunsil/Texans trade.

Jets may trade down if they decide to stay w Darnold.

Bengals dont need a QB.
-----------------------------

To many future events to know what our choices will be but there seems to be some options. I like the idea of drafting BYU QB Zach Wilson but I think our D does have a window that would be closing in 2 years (have to make decisions on Allen/Payne/Sweat/Matty I).

our 2020 D + our 2016 offense = super bowl

----------------

9ers -- glad you mentioned them. I read they may move on from Jimmy G. hes another option for us. Not a world beater but I do believe he could be decent in a Turner offense. Quick read and throw on time.
Feel bad for you my man if George was a childhood favorite. I get the arm thing but he had a personality of a wet mop and once famously said that leadership was overrated from the QB position.

Doesn't this situation sound familiar? A new coach handcuffed by the owner's dumb move at QB?
He really was man because I did not get into football until I was in the 7th grade, i had almost no interest in it as a young kid. Jeff George was one of the guys who introduced me to the sport, through hearing about his exploits through a good friend of mine. So he was one of the first players I "knew". So as I grew to love football so much, I think nostalgia has put some blinders on me about George. I even have an Oakland Raiders #3 George jersey that my friend gave me. I know his career in the NFL for the most part was a flop. In hindsight he was too talented to be a backup QB, but not good enough to be a dependable starter, IMO. There were times in his career where he was good enough to make you wonder.
Draft a guy and play him. That is the way to go. QB on rookie deal. See Russell Wilson, Mahomes and now Josh Allen. Try and get in a 3 year window where you aren't paying your QB big dollars.

We won't be able to afford Stafford, plus he is starting to get banged up so I would pass for those two reasons.

The league is changing. Guys like Matt Ryan will be extinct in 5 years. You need a duel threat guy.

I'm trying to trade up in the draft. Offer Payne or Allen and the 1st rounder. I'd go all in for the kid at BYU.
This!! I would only bring in a vet if his cap number is equal to Alex Smith’s current contract . We have too many key contracts coming up and don’t want to waste that money on another over the hill QB. Stafford would be my only choice unless Garapolo iis available, not a Matt Ryan fan. Don’t want another Donovan McNabb.

Re: Haskins released

In the minority here, but we have chased qb's for 70 years - see stat about 1st round qb's posted earlier. Tell the scouting department to search high and low for the best 3rd rounder(given our 2nd round curse) and pull the trigger in that round. I have more faith in our 3rd - 5th round scouts to beat the bushes. The problem with Dak / Stafford is cap, health and father time. Rodgers was picked after Jason Campbell, Lamar Jackson was late first, there is a substantial list of qb's after rd 1, pick 18 that have been good to great. That should have been priority 1, 2 and 3 for our scouts this year.

You have to move on

As of now the Dolphins have the 3rd pick (Texans pick) if there is a QB that the scouts think can start next year, then I pull the trigger. I would offer this year's first and a 3rd, plus either one of these DL's Matt I.,Payne or Settle. As much as I love these guys, you have to sacrifice one of them. Allen, Payne's and Settle contracts are coming up, we have proven we can play without Matt I. Also throw in Moreau.

With that cap number? I’m not paying all that for a back up. He needs to be making south of 10 mil per

24M cap hit next year if we keep Alex

10.8M dead money if we cut him (we would "save" 13.2M)
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/washington-football-team/alex-smith-3337/

Cutting Haskins doesnt effect our cap position bc his contract was guaranteed anyway.
--------------------------

Alex Smith looked like he was regressing in the Steelers game, then injury to start the SF game. Who knows, maybe a few weeks off and Alex is good to go for week 17 and beyond and plays well. "calf fatigue" probably wont ever go away im guessing, i dont think we could rely on him as QB1 to start 2021 and 24M cap hit is too much for QB2 since we have Kyle Allen as our QB2.

--------

Lots of options to find a QB1 though. IM happy.

Not paying him 24 million next year. Hopefully he retires or he will need to be cut.

24 million is a bargain compared to what Dak, Ryan and Stafford would cost. I would trade up and draft a QB if the scouts identify one, keep Smith as a mentor and have him re-work his contract.

SunnySide 12-29-2020 12:19 PM

Re: Haskins released

Since his injury in 2018 .... weve been waiting for the 2021 offseason to finally be able to cut him.

Alex Smith, nice guy, cute family, congratulations on making 71M for 17 or so starts ... but weve circled this 2021 date on our calendar 2 years ago.

2021 FA is the time to strike. Go all in. Teams in cap hell will have to make some serious cuts to players they otherwise wouldnt. Make 2021 to 2023 a potential window to be NFCE champs for 3 years.

-------------

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cap/2021/

^^ look at each teams cap position come 2021. 10 teams are negative and that is with only like 40 or so players counting against the cap. They need to ADD players to get to 53.

Saints?? fucked. so fucked. they are negative 96M next year w 45 players on the books

Eagles? negative 64M w 41 players

Falcons? negative 24M w 31 players

Packers and Rodgers? negative 19M w 37 players

** assumes a 175M cap, nfl is adding an extra game next year
------------------------

lets go!

All depends on what the QB plan is. If it's Alex, Kyle Allen and a rookie, no need to worry about Smith's #. If you're brining in a high priced free agent, yeah, his # becomes a concern.

They are all a lot better than Alex now. I don't want Dak, no way we're paying that price tag. Don't really care for Ryan either.

I'd like Stafford if available for a reasonable trade. But to get him we'd definitely have to cut Alex.

At some point, the actual return on investment needs to be part of the calculation. I don't think Alex will give anywhere near 24 million of value next year.

If we can get a rookie we believe in that can actually start, then the money isn't an issue. But if we have to go any other route it will be.

Tricky situation. Because Alex is a great guy and should go out with respect.

In my ideal world he retires, and he gets hired as like a quality control assistant or something and stays with the team. He has future OC/HC written all over him. Would be a cool succession plan in say like 5 years, for him to take over for Rivera. Would give him time to learn the ropes of coaching, although I think he'd be great at it right out the shoot.

Kyle Allen has always been the plan for this year. You bring him back

Alex can stay if only he takes a big pay cut.

A Taylor Heinicke/Kyle Allen showdown for starting QB role in 2021?

QB situation is very complex if we win Sunday and a lot easier if we lose. Those 9 or so spots change the whole equation. Sunday has impacts all over the place.

Matt I to me has more value than both Allen and Payne simply because he can rush the best from the inside. Plus he is under contract on his 2nd deal. For those reasons I'm going to offer up Payne or Allen. I think our 1st rounder and a solid starting DT would get us Miami's 1st pick.

But it's just long overdue to go in and get a guy who can win games for us. It is time to draft a gym rat franchise QB.

IMO this is why you do not let the coach have final say. Ron being a defensive coach can say we just need a game manager so let Alex start blah blah. I just hope Ron feels the same way Ido..lol.it

They wouldn’t trade Allen due to contract year and team captain. The other team would have to pay him.

I have a feeling that our starting QB next year will be a veteran FA acquisition. Especially if the team makes it to the playoffs.

Our first rounder can be better spent on a LT or MLB.

I think if we don’t like a QB in the first round...Stafford, Matt Ryan not available or go somewhere else. Dak stays with Dallas.

I would consider Fitzpatrick over Alex to come in and compete with Kyle Allen who is coming off injury along with a Heineken/mid round draftee.

Fitzpatrick is better than Alex and would be cheaper than his current number.

How much we pay a QB ? I happen to believe that with a Qb like Stafford and a solid draft (Wr, mlb, db, ) we can be a contender now ... look at Tampa and Brady .. we are in a similar situation.. we can win 10-11 games with a Good QB ..

I'd take a flier on Fitz especially if Smith and RR don't see something they like at our draft spots. Agree Dak isn't going anywhere. Dallas knows if he was healthy they probably already had the division wrapped up. Allen and Heinicke in reality probably won't get it done.

Re: Haskins released

My 2 thoughts for why Fitzpatrick would not be a good fit is that he isnt a quick read/throw guy and he takes chances. With our D, we dont need to press press press on offense as its not a race to the first one to 30 points wins. We can win comfortably and consistently 24-13 vs 37-27. We value possessions, play strong D and we win.

Then I looked up his stats. Fitzpatrick is second in the league in time from snap to throw at 2.2 seconds, behind Big Bens 2.1.
https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2020/passing_advanced.htm

I was a "no to fitz" person 5 mins ago and am now putting his name in the hat with the 15 other options we have.

Interesting plan C if we dont draft a 1st rounder or get a Stafford type guy.
