Sam Fortie wrote this article and I have it saved…here is the key part, you want your QB to progress and have success, then you put him under center. One way to see it is on play-action fakes. Fakes from under center, known as “hard” play-action, generally force linebackers to step up to stop the run more aggressively than “soft” fakes from shotgun, which allow linebackers a split second longer to read the play, letting them stay in passing lanes longer and making the quarterback’s margin for error smaller. In January, Fox NFL broadcaster Greg Olsen pointed out one common thread among C.J. Stroud, Jordan Love and Brock Purdy, three young quarterbacks who had success last season: Their offensive coordinators made things easier on them by putting them under center on early downs.
I love this post, I hope we implement it as we have a nice center now to make this work. Ironically, our line strength is the middle, which says trick the lbs with play action over their heads. This required running up the gut too. Again possible, but again opposite of Kingsbury in the past. I see a bit of a disconnect between our coaching and our free agency, particularly offense. Not having stand alone tackles who can be way outside in shotgun is going to make this whole air style impossible. I welcome the opposite of that, particularly to develop a rookie QB. What we really need is solid running with a dash of unpredictability on offense. Read and Chuck it will get a QB killed, particularly in the NFC East. |
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
I disagree. Look at Penix Jr - he gets to sit and learn from a good qb and if that good qb who never got injured until last year gets injured again they will have a good rookie in there to take his place.
Not saying we should draft a DT when we already have two good players on big money deals, but I'm not gonna question Peters. You draft the guy you think has the best chance to succeed in the NFL, not the position you need the most. Look at the 2021 qb class - that class has mostly turned out to be ass and even Trevor Lawrence isn't a stud and he's the only one left with his original team.
?????? You just said you disagreed with me saying don't reach for a player and then argued to not to reach for a player? You probably need to see the post I was responding to. |

with his $100mil guaranteed contract? If only we could all be so lucky. |
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
and I do agree, we missed the top tiers of OT, so probably better to take the higher value at CB etc, and see if there's a trade or cut at OT somewhere along the way (or draft a lower tier prospect at some point and hope?).

Two recent examples of sitting and learning panning out: Patrick Mahomes and Jordan Love. |

Both likely would have been just fine if they played right away, especially PM |

FWIW, per JP Finlay:
"Peters says the Commanders made some calls about moving up late but there wasn't a fit as the draft board fell." |

That argument is all hearsay because it's not solvable. Playing the what if game doesn't help. |

You don't know that though. That's the entire point. THey were successful after sitting. Most of the QBs successful sat first for the most part. Either that or the ones that "succeed" are done once their running ability wanes around 31 years of age. |

For us in the Snyder era, whether you played right away (Forbes) or didn’t play right away (Howell) made no difference in the end due to lousy team management and coaching Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
The ATL Pennix thing is pretty wild, just don’t get why you trade for Cousins and then immediately take his replacement instead of grabbing a WR for him
I get why they did it, Cousins is on the wrong side of 35 and coming back from a major injury. If it happens again they are set to move on. If it doesn't happen a good young qb gets to sit for 2-3 years and be ready when Cousins can't do the job anymore. Win-win. The NFL is a 2 qb per team league now, rare are the qb's that can go year after year after year without some sort of injury. If you don't have a solid backup qb you're fucked. |

I'm paraphrasing here but I think you said it would be stupid to draft a player who can't contribute over one who can. My argument is that even if Penix Jr doesn't contribute this year, him sitting and learning isn't a bad thing. And if Cousins does get hurt again they have a young developing qb to turn to. |
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
Agreed. Even crazier that Cousins didn't know about it nor did Penix Jr. look thrilled when he got drafted. He is one of the older qbs in the draft. This pick is the most notable surprise to me so far in this draft.
This is completely speculative, but I've seen some video excerpts of what seems to be the Falcons GM explaining the decision to the owner (who did not seem happy about the decision). |
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
Florio has his panties in a bunch over the Falcons and Penix, further evidence that the move was solid

And if Cousins does get hurt again they have a young developing qb to turn to.
That is what I said I guess we had a different understanding of the wording (My fault). Poster I was responding to wanted to reach if necessary for OT instead of taking more talented players at other positions of need like CB. I thought it would be stupid to pass up better players that can contribute than a lesser talent that wouldn't really contribute (or would be less likely to). |
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
Of course Harbaugh moved up to take Ladd. He knows
|
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
Top CB’s are still on the board.
|
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
WTF
|
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
I'm fine with the first of the two 2nd round picks. We got rid of some DL so we needed to restock on that area. Still need to see some OL though. Big time. However, isn't the interior already crowded with Payne/Allen?
Of course Harbaugh moved up to take Ladd. He knows
No worries for us. We surely didn't need another WR. |
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
I don't get the DT pick at all, it was arguably the only position we shouldn't have taken as others mentioned before the pick
|
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
Suggesting either there's a trade on the cards (Allen?) or they simply went BPA and will scheme up to use the guy effectively. My vote is trade.
|
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
I don't understand why we wouldn't have traded the 4th Dt and a 3rd for a starting LT in the first. Boy, first reaction from me, a real head scratcher, unless we are trading Payne for a starting LT or something that we don't know
|
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
It appears he was highest rated on their board. #20 on espn board, DeJean is #19.
Hate the pick as far as need. Would rather CB there. |
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
Need to redeem themselves here.
|
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
We just traded down
|
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
Traded back. Hmmm.
|
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
Kinda a log jam at DT, but they stuck to the board as this guy is highly regarded
DT is a more prominent position these day and Jon Allen counts towards the cap next year |

With fuckin the Eagles? |
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
Apparently we don't need a CB.

Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
I really like Jer'Zhan Newton. This description suits him well, "He has shock in his mitts to jolt blockers. He mixes up his moves to generate sacks/pressures, routinely employing a violent club/swim and a quick-swipe maneuver. He also incorporates a Houdini-like move where he sticks his hand out and gets OTs to lunge at it before pulling it away and clearing the block."

BPA pick so I'm not complaining. Only thing I hate are reaches (Which is why Ron drove me nuts every year). |
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
Trade details...
Nicki Jabvala Commanders get: 50, 53, 161 Eagles get: 40, 78, 152
|
Re: Commanders 2024 NFL Draft Thread
They dropped deep into the 2nd, thinking that is OT and TE zone, perhaps even lb
