You can't paint all government employees with the same brush, whether it be city, county, state or federal. Took me decades to figure it out, first the average citizen usually only interacts with the lowest government employees.
The jobs that require no or minimal special skills or education past high school or a Ged. Examples would be, federal procurement officers, ATF, FBI, Border Patrol, IRS agents, Postal workers on a federal level, DMV clerks, DOT workers, State Patrol on a state level, police, sheriffs, building inspectors, health inspectors, on a city and county level. The preceding group are usually paid 2-3 times what they would earn for their job skills and education in the private sector.

If you go to what I would call mid or upper mid level government jobs they start to even out pay wise with the private sector, jobs that require 4 year degrees plus experience, master's degrees and PHD's. These people make a little more or the same than private sector, usually with good benefits. Science and Technology researchers, college professors, university deans, medical doctors and psychologists working in county, state and federal facilities. The problem is most people never interact with these people so their opinion of government workers is formed by their experiences with the lower level employees, see above.

Top level, mostly way underpaid. You could equate senators, governors, and the President as CEO's of varied sized corporations. The average governor made $133K, Senator $174k and the president $400K. In 2011 a total of 485 CEO's made over $1 million according to Forbes.

For the record as a whole I think most lower level government employees
need either fired or big pay cuts. To me it is the same as giving welfare to an able bodied person if you are paying $30 an hour for a government job that needs equivalent skills and education to working the snack bar at the movie theater.

^^ BuffaloBob pretty much hits it on the head in terms of my experience. I would suggest that most government attorneys, for example, are paid substantially less than there private counterparts at every level with the gap biggest at the County level and smallest at the Federal level. Lots of reasons for this and, while others may, you won't find me complaining about that [I]particular[/I] issue. Lots of trade-offs, but suffice to say, many 4th or 5th year associates at larger firms make substantially more than I do.

Holy crap! Knew a guy who was a Caltrans (California Department of Transportation) worker back in Cali in around 2005 he made $30 an hour. (62k yearly on 40 hours, but he worked 50 average and made over $85k). They are notoriously lazy, they are all over the place in public view, you can see 3 guys leaning on shovels while one guy fills a pot hole. This guy making $30 an hour was on a road maintenance and clean up crew, they drove around and filled pot holes with shovels, cut up fallen trees, replaced guard rails, etc,etc. So a job that takes no more skills than changing oil at Jiffy Lube pays more than a Baltimore City lawyer? Something is wrong with that picture.

Well, those are first year salaries. I imagine that the top salary is closer to 80-90K. In addition, supervisors probably make 90+.

If you're in it for the money, gov't work is not the place to be unless you have no or limited skills. Once you get into the specialists, it's about quality of life or commitment to public service.

to be fair, those private practice attys work 80 hour work weeks. in California they also get 50-100% bonus as well.

and i was in no way impugning my disdain for what Fed gov't employees (especially DOD and their contractors) on state level employees or ppl like joe who actually bust tail and provide a tremendous return in value.

the govt needs more joes and less ppl like my clients.

I did some DOD contract work, there is something for the most part where it pays considerably less working for the Feds than for the private sector. I don't know where the stories of $175 hammers and $600 toilet seats come from, I definitely wasn't making any. I was making small replacement parts for weaponry and vehicles. Every contract went to lowest qualified bidder, and whenever a job repeated it went to the lowest bidder again. Final selling price was close to what a similar item would go for in the private sector, but labeling, packing, and other paperwork as much as doubled the time needed over the same priced job going to Joe Gunsmith down the street.

A lot of the blueprints were photocopies of hand drawn ones from as far back as World War II that had never been updated. Not only were they hard to read, they had requirements for raw materials and coatings that had long been obsolete. If you didn't know the modern replacements off the top of your head or know a private sector vendor to call for the answer, don't waste your time trying to get help from the procurement officer that wrote the work order they usually don't know or know who to ask.

It blew my mind talking to some off these procurement officers who write up the contract solicitations. Some had been doing the job for decades yet did not know how to read the simplest of blueprints. You would think since most of the DOD solicitations contained blueprints they would teach their employees how to read them. I actually went to a government contractor office at March Air Force base a few times. Most of the time I walked in the employees were standing around drinking coffee and eating doughnuts. I wonder why the higher ups didn't send everyone to drafting school, when they had nothing to do they could be converting those illegible WWII blueprints to modern digital formats.

sorry if i talk about my interracial relationship a lot but being right there to see the dynamic of how people act differently to a white person v a black person is an amazing study in psychology and sociology.

Had a small oil leak with a car I just bought and took it to my mechanic. He called and said my oil filter wasn't screwed on tight. Got my oil changed by jiffy lube lil over 3 weeks ago before my vacation. My gears were grinding, literally. I'm pissed.

my buddy used to work at jiffy lube. he had zero prior mechanic experience but he was a big burly dude who looked like a mechanic.

he would come home covered in oil with burns all down his arms for the first few weeks until someone told him about using this item called an oil pan. supposedly thats where the hot oil was supposed to go.

people who use their windshield wiper fluid on the highway. an audi got me pretty good this morning on the beltway.

im kinda torn on this. its just water/wiper fluid and unless my car was just washed i dont think it leaves any spots BUT the audi certainly has to know that he/she is going to get a good amount of spray on the car behind them and it is an unwanted offensive touching (however slight) on another persons property.

i guess the tipping point for me to not like it is that the audi had to have known but does it anyway.

Okay. I have:
- 3 substantive motions due Tuesday, May 27th (A motion to dismiss, a motion for summary judgment, and a motion for injunctive relief - all in Federal Court);
- A Response due on June 3rd in a Privilege Log dispute in case with over 5,000 pages of discovery and over 100 Privilege Log entries.
- Two depositions in the next two days and four more on June 10, 11 (and meeting with clients on June 9 to prep them for their depos - the June depos involve Federal discrimination claims and have produced 10K pages of documents);
- To top it all off, I have two-week trial beginning June 16th (unrelated to any of the above).

It's a sh** ton of work in a very short time. Hard work is fine, it's a challenge. I fully intend to come out victorious in everything at issue. Game on man. The work is not what's grinding my gears ...

I have spent only three hours today (I got into the office at 7:00 a.m. and am still here) doing MY work BECAUSE at 8:30 with the first mail delivery an Order comes from one of circuit courts saying that, because one of the attorneys I supervise failed to respond, he is now compelled to provide certain discovery information within 10 days AND the court indicates it will permit an order of attorney fees against the State based on the bad faith of this attorney.

I had specifically reviewed his (three) cases with him last Friday and he never mentioned the Motion to Compel. Because it was apparently hand delivered to him, the only way I could have know was to do a desk audit in the midst of my trial last month. I call the attorney (who was taking leave) and tell him he needs to deal with ASAP and that I need the Answers on my desk by Tuesday noon. Period. He comes into the office and, I guess, gets to work.

All of that's bad and caused me to spend most of my day in conferences with bosses, reviewing his case, and drafting "memos to file." However, I wanted a management position. I understand it means you do your work AND have to make room for oversight issues that can pop up anytime. It's not the need to manage a bad situation that's grinding my gears ...

HOWEVER --- At 6:30, with my desk - quite literally - piled with deposition transcripts and evidence binders that I need to draft one of the several motions I have currently pending, the SOB comes into my office and starts arguing with me about how he should respond. He has three f'ing active cases. None with any pending deadlines except for the one in which he has a JUDGE'S ORDER COMPELLING HIM TO FILE FULL, FORMAL RESPONSES IN 10 M'FING DAYS. Holy Crap!! Just do the f'ing work and stop looking for goddamn short cuts. It's why the Order was entered in the first f'ing place!

After wasting 30 minutes of my post 5:30 time (any after hours worked is carefully tucked away as time lost from my family), I finally said to him "Just draft the damn answers and have on my desk by Thursday noon - and no, you cannot just refer to certain documents."

Consider my gears f'ing ground.

My Boss's , are grinding my gears !No one is listening to anyone one else .I work for a large grocery company and they want to implement a new way of distributing the "box meat" (steaks roast, chops etc.)to our stores ,our supplier hasn't been on time all week ,so while the rest of the stores orders are ready and loaded the meat isn't even at the warehouse which cause's late orders ....NOT GOOD ,at all . It's effing Memorial Day weekend and you choose to do this shit now ???:doh: :mad:

I know it's really petty, but I swear it makes people realize how big of an ass they're being on the highway. And it's definitely safer than a break check.

i was safely following. at least 5 car lengths back. when you are on the highway doing highway speeds, the spray really travels.

i am a "take it easy" driver. go with the flow of traffic, pick a lane and stick to it. i have 1 speeding ticket and 0 at fault accidents in 18 years of driving.

People that park their cars in the drive way so that part of the car blocks the sidewalk. I hate that when I am running and then I am forced off of public property and into the road or worse when I am pushing my child in the jogger or biking with my elder kid. I usually just run or bike through their yard if they are that inconsiderate.

I play in a pick up basketball league once a week. There is this one dude, who calls EVERYTHING a foul. You breathe on him, its a foul. God forbid you actually foul him, he loses his shit.

Then as I'm going up for a lay-up, he just hacks the shit out of me.

It was bearable the first few weeks, but I'm reaching my breaking point. Time to start throwing some bows.

In keeping with the thread, another thing that grinds my gears is having employees that finish an advanced degree and instantly come into my office asking for a raise.

Am I being a douche or being reasonable? This particular employee's resume hasn't exactly been stellar. He went today to meet with our CTO because he is "unhappy with his career trajectory". Just because you suddenly have a Master's entitles you to nothing.

OK, thanks. I thought I was being rational, but sometimes I need other opinions. :D

This particular guy is someone who should be really careful considering he NEEDS this job if he wants to continue to have a relationship with his son. Just went through a rough divorce and I've been more than reasonable with his time. The other day he straight up just said "no" to something I asked him to do. I'm like, "I need to take a break from you because I am not going to speak to you irrationality because I am extremely angry at you."
