Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021

I think Atlanta will draft a QB if the guy they want falls to them, so likely they'll take one. I'm not sure I then see a slot we can sensibly move up to to pick on of the remainder (assuming the Jags and Jets pick the top 2 prospects). Panthers are almost guaranteed to go QB and I'd be surprised if the Pats didn't take the opportunity of a high 1st to get a top QB (unless Bill is dead set on trading down for more picks; they do have a weak roster). Unless we can get an affordable trade I would be surprised if we trade up. I'd bet on RR holding out until draft day to see what shakes out and if there's still a great prospect at #19 grab him, else work a trade with the Jets for Darnold (assuming they draft QB and Darnold is surplus he might go cheaper than advertised) and take BPA in rd 1, then pick up someone like Mond lower down to stash on the PS. A 3rd for Darnold wouldn't be the end of the world, and if we got him for a 4th (or less?!)...

End of the world? No, but it would be a terrible move. Zero interest in Darnold. Frankly, I wouldn't sign him as a free agent. I certainly don't want to give away an asset for him. We have three QBs better than Darnold on the team right now.
I feel like the biggest hole is QB. RR made it clear after the season that the QB position is “one of the most important things that we need to get done and get established”. They have made it clear that they want to upgrade at QB, and have they already shown that they are pursuing other options, so I don't think they begin the season with TH and KA battling it out.
RR made it clear that franchise QBs don't grow on trees. He wants one, but there are more teams that want one than there are such QBs. Give RR credit for not overpaying for retreads at QB, though Rams saved us from ourselves with Stafford.

They see no one in FA or other teams that can actually be traded for without mortgaging future absurdly, which they wisely won't do (1,024 first round picks for the HOLE Watson!). Position most teams are in, at least half, probably closer to two thirds or three quarters. I think we could sign a cut if that happens.

I think we will draft someone at QB. A third developmental prospect. Maybe early, maybe late, but our FO has to have identified at least two or three QBs in draft that have potential, even if late in draft. I think we might be prepared to move up 2-5 spots if a guy we like falls. Some think Trey Lance?

The problem is that most FA QBs don't offer anything Heinecke doesn't. Heinecke is smart and can run a pro O but has weak arm and small size. There are 10+ FA QBs who are the same guy, but possibly with less moxy. Then there are the running QBs or talented guys who aren't accurate and usually mentally slow and can't run a pro O consistently effectively. I'd be much more comfortable giving Heinecke a one year shot, but his arm strength is a real concern. Once Ds and DBs study film on him, his inability to place ball with power, having to completely anticipate, may be exposed, especially in pocket with pressure where he can't go through complete motion. Heinecke does NOT have arm strength to consistently deliver long, accurate throws even with non-optimal mechanics like other QBs like Mahomes, Rodgers. Of course, Brady can't do that either, so who knows. . .

I like Mac Jones, but he is essentially Heinecke 2.0, arm strength real concern. I think a first round QB should have elite athletic traits, and teams often reach for QBs that don't. Mistake. I could see us drafting a LT, CB, FS, LB, etc., to maximize value and then taking QB 3rd - 5th round, which is where QBs with obvious flaws in game should go. If we are going to find a franchise QB without mortgaging the farm, and without blind luck of one dropping which can't be counted on, we have to draft one with talent in the right places and flaws in the right places, that are correctable.

A GM that takes 3 or 4 cracks at drafting a QB over 3 seasons, should find a franchise QB, and if he can't, you need a new GM.

Teams that win the SB without franchise QB--they have never won more than one in salary cap era--load the O up with talent and have a dominant D. I think our FO is preparing to do that, they want to find a franchise QB, but know odds say they won't.
Unless they move up for Fields or Lance it’s definitely looking like they’ll roll with a FA Like Mariota or as mentioned trading for Darnold.

Best case scenario is The Jets keep Sam and Atlanta doesn’t draft a QB. If those happen, the QBs will fall some.
Good god I would be so pissed if we got Mariota, Dalton is a better option imo. Darnold seems too broke and expensive to fix, pass.

I know the Skins are seriously thinking QB first round...Fields, Lance are def a move up option they are considering if they fall head over heels during this process. The Bama guy will probably be gone at our pick and I don’t think he fits.

I’d prefer a blockbuster for Wilson or Watson and if we don’t move up, I’d take Ian Book with our 4th round pick. Off script playmaker, athletic and competitive. Accuracy is a plus. Sit him as behind Heinicke and Allen to grow him as a placeholder for at least a backup.

Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021

Coaching can make such a huge difference to players (see WFT 2020 defense) it is short sighted at best to write off a young and talented player before he has been given a chance to play for someone other than Adam Gase. Tannehill was written off because of his years under Gase, look at him now. Darnold has issues, of course, otherwise he wouldn't be available for less than 3 1st rounders ala Wilson and Watson. But I don't think you will get him for less than a 2nd rounder, the demand will be too great for just a 3rd rounder to suffice. Whether you think he is worth a shot or not is a personal opinion, but right now I trust RR and the front office to know more than the fanbase so if they do/don't trade for Darnold then it was for good reason. As for Montez, you are high if you think Darnold is his floor. His floor is he will be cut in training camp.

I must be missing something with TH. He only played in 1 game for WFT. I just done see him suddenly becoming a viable NFL starter. There's a reason he was out of the league for two years.

God, I hope this is no more than due diligence and smoke screening. I have never understood the desire for a "known commodity" when that commodity is known to be absolutely terrible. I'd much rather go with the unseasoned guy with upside than a guy we know for certain will continue to fail.

Because if the price is too high for the latter guy you might have to settle for scraps.

Tannehill was looked at as average in Miami because Gase is a terrible coach, Tennessee picked him up for scraps and look at him now. If a coach likes the talent and thinks a guy just needs some coaching up he will look into acquiring him.

If you're saying you disagree with Ron's evaluation of Darnold you are basically saying you disagree with Ron's talent evaluation skills at qb.

At least 8 NFL front offices disagree with you, so he is not "Known" to be terrible, he is obviously "known" to have a high upside which is worth a 3rd or maybe a 2nd round pick to some.

[Edit]
On the other hand Gase is "known" to be one of the most awful coaches in the history of the league and a documented QB killer.

Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021

While a lot of valid arguments can be made on both sides of the ability of Darnold as a QB...the argument I fear the most is the one internally about relinquishing a first round pick for Darnold. If they like him enough, I think it’s definitely on the table which would be a terrible mistake.

Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021

I would be at ease with them using a second if they thought he was worth it, but a first is too steep a price unless their second rounder came back along with him

Nobody is that stupid. If any team was willing to trade a first, or even a second, for Darnold, he would already be a former Jet. It is very hard to find any positives about Darnold, unless you love interceptions and fumbles. 39 INTs and 20 fumbles in 38 games. Holy smokes! Blaming that on Gase is lazy, IMO. The QB has shown what he is. Three seasons of awful play is sufficient evidence for me that the guy can't successfully play quarterback in the NFL. That is not a small sample size, and the results are clear. The Jets want to be rid of him, for Pete's sake. Why bail them out? And having a turnover machine as our QB would be the last thing a team with a defense like ours needs. Why screw up our shot? I only pray that RR's desire for an experienced QB doesn't cloud his vision on just how poor that QB's experience has been.

By the way, what is the valid argument that favors trading for Darnold? I certainly haven't seen one. He was overrated by the media talking heads coming out of USC. His being a former #3 overall pick is NOT a valid argument. He has proven that conclusively.

Chico23231 03-15-2021 12:02 PM

Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021

First..I’m not a big fan of acquiring Darnold, but he is competitive, has the arm talent. He was on a terrible team with zero talent around him being coach by a moron with zero people skills. Gase/jets impact on stunting his growth can’t be ignored.

Plus in the league there is always without doubt orgs and head coaches thinking they can do it better and get more out of a talent like Darnold who was a legit top 5 draft talent.

If they want a first, I'm out. I think he has potential but he has not shown that he's worth the 19th pick. I doubt Ron is cool with that deal. If it's for 51? I'd say yeah

Math? :)

There is a HUGE difference between touching base and making serious inquiry. Do I think a third (or even a quarter :)) of the league is genuinely interested in trading real assets for more interceptions and fumbles? No. But you can feel free to believe the NY media, if you wish. Half the league is in the market for QB to some degree. For reportedly half of those teams to not even do due diligence on this guy for market price purposes speaks volumes. A team calls and says "Looking at a possible change at backup QB, and would like a guy with some starting experience in the NFL, what are you looking to get back for Darnold?" "A mid-to-late first rounder." "Click." That is a contact. :)

I'm trusting RR here. I pray we don't make such a big mistake. We rid ourselves of Haskins and have the opportunity to progress and take advantage of the window our defense presents us with. Darnold would be a step backwards. My God, the Jets have given up on the guy. Trade a first rounder for him? Good grief.

Ha..great call. Quarter...but still I wouldn’t want a first disappearing for Darnold. I think his decision making is really questionable...all though it would be intriguing having him in Scott system not under center.
