Well to be fair the "human mascot" point is quite a different story whether the logo is used by a multi billions dollars sports franchise or by an association defending NA rights and bearing the name of the NA man who designed it... isn't it ? Context is everything.

I felt all along that if the franchise had actually, from the start and all the way, done enough to represent, honor and support NA communities, the discussion would have been different. Maybe I'm wrong, cuz it sure didn't feel like the most vocal anti name people cared a lot about actual Natives' opinions... but we'll never know.

Sheehan mentioned on his pod that marketing people say it'd be smart to have a first announcement... to announce the official date the new name will be announced.
I think that's quite likely. Make it a count down to the new name announcement, build up the excitement... would make sense, wouldn't it ?

Maybe that's what they're shooting right now.

With our COVID situation, any of these would fit. Sigh.

I hope it's wolves, actually. I think some of the uni mockups for that have been neat, and the Commanders doesn't do it for me.

Maybe it will be something totally unexpected like DC Vipers or something -- there is a military aircraft by that name. I just hope it doesn't suck.

But it wouldn't do anything to bring in the younger crowd (me) who has no quality memories to speak of.

It would be like naming them the Washington Slingin' Sammies - you might appease the seniors who remember those days but if you didn't witness it it doesn't hold the same weight.

Washington Instagrammers or D.C. Tik Toc'ers, to pull in the younger crowd.

This oldster generally refrains from speaking for the younger generation, but I don't see how it would make much difference.

Unless Commanders has some kind of innate hipness that eludes me.

Methinks a properly and efficiently run franchise would both bring in the young and retain the old.

Doing some quick and dirty math, the youngest fans who actually saw Sammy Baugh would be 76 years old. That's assuming a 7 years old saw him in this last year (1952). Not a big constituency, but I would take that name over Commanders any day. Impressed you know who he was. ;)

Commanders is non-offensive. Nothing comes to mind when you think of commanders, except a generic image of a leader. That's why it's being considered probably.

That's where we're trending with sports team names nowadays. Kraken is the exception. Vegas Golden Knights, Cleveland Guardians, Oklahoma City Thunder - none of them are particularly intimidating.

It's hard to come up with a name that not only inspires confidence in a fanbase/strikes fear in an opponent while also being non-offensive to any singular group out there.

Commanders is not going to strike fear in anyone, let alone another team composed of young men at their physical peak and fed a hefty dose of machismo and maybe PEDs.

Maybe I'm not being concise enough - the name is more for the fanbase than the players. Players only care about playing for a good team and making money. But I want a name that was on the level with Redskins - it was unique, based off the fierce Native American warriors of old, and back in the day it meant something.

Guardians sucks. Golden Knights sucks - because it has nothing to do with Vegas and everything to do with the owner having a thing for the military. Thunder sucks. Kraken is good.

Commanders is just some generic uninspiring shit. Need something inspiring - that's the key, since Dan is dealing with an eroding fanbase that literally hates him for everything else. If he fucks this up it's one more notch on his bedpost of fuckups.

I think with most historical names they've been around as long as we have or longer so they're generally associated with the quality of the team. Patriots/Steelers also generally have an association with the city they're from in addition to having a reputation as quality teams historically. I'm referencing new teams that have come along in the last 20 years or so - I think there's a decline in general in the quality of the name and to be fair part of the issue is trying to be all-inclusive as well as lacking in imagination.

The problem with us is the last 30 years is really gonna erode any short-term confidence in the name - so if we come up with a weak name it's generally gonna be associated with a weak team. Don't fuck it up Dan.

I would say 3 of the 5 teams names listed are generic. If Bears, Giants, & Cardinals aren't generic names I don't know what is. Most team names are generic.

I would agree.

I like ones that have some regional association- Steelers, 49ers, Packers, and Patriots fall under that category.

Then there is a category that is a bit more quirky. The Browns were named after the guy who founded and coached them. Say what you will, but Ravens was a clever way to get a name that is seemingly generic and easy, but actually is named after a poem by Edgar Allen Poe. And the piece de resistance is the Cleveland/Los Angeles/St Louis/Los Angeles-again Rams who were named after the Fordham Rams, the beloved alma mater of yours truly, Redskin Fan Emeritus, Jack Lord.

It is the latter category that inspires my liking of Hogs.

So take this for what it's worth and if this has been mentioned somewhere in here before I had not seen it, but I was watching games yesterday at a bar and the new name change for Washington came up and a woman there who is an attorney in Raleigh NC area but also works up in DC at times said an attorney she works with in DC said the teams new name is going to be The Redhawks. I have not seen that name anywhere...so who knows.

Of course a deal between the Snyders and Lerners is about as likely as one between Iran and Israel.

My preference if staying WFT but if I had to pick a name it would be Americans.
Unfortunately like Nationals that would require a color change to red, white, blue and that's not happening.

I don't think we would have to change our colors in any case. Neither Edgar Allen Poe nor Ravens are purple. Jets tend not to be green. Panthers are not whatever that color is down there.

I’m good with WFT but it’s not going to stay that.. They wouldn’t have Joe Gibbs do a video to keep it that name.. Ron also said the team has ordered all of the gear for next year as well. Most seem to think it’ll be commanders which I’m cool with as long as they keep the W logo

While I tend to agree with what you say, you are assuming that WFT is being open and honest about how they are conducting the the process. I don't trust the WFT organization to be honest about anything.

It's about how stupid sticking with the temporary name after communicating about how great their rebranding process was for 2 years would make them look.

And I do think Jason Wright has done a fairly good job of being as transparent as he could be while conducting the rebranding of a billions dollars company.
