I read an article the other day, trademark rules are way more complicated as people think, IE there's a notion of does the consumer make a confusion between the 2 brands. Which definitely wouldn't be the case between an NFL team located in DC and a college team in Arkansas.

Not an expert, but from what I understood there's nothing there that a multi billions dollars franchise couldn't hurdle.

The Giants in SF can't stop the New York Giants.

I am not saying it wouldn't be a hurdle, but definitely not insurmountable if you have the legal and financial resources and the resolve to pursue it.

The two Giants teams were once both located in the NYC and at the Polo Grounds. Using the same name was intentional- much like the old Boston Braves football and baseball teams which became Washington Redskins and Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves respectively. Bears/Cubs in Chicago and Lions/Tigers in Detroit would be two slightly different examples.

But you are correct that it is doable. The Miami University of Ohio Redskins never irked the Washington Redskins. They became the Redhawks and I read they stated we are welcome to adopt that name as well.

Perhaps it would be prudent to take them up on it. Unless we all want to stupidly follow Daniel Snyder into Commanders oblivion,

I’m not saying I like the commanders .. some have said we are naming our team same as a jeep model… you mean like Denver did with a Ford Bronco ? Or chargers ? Or Rams .. I own a ram truck 😀.. Ford falcon .. To anyone that hates the name Commanders let’s here your name choices.. without using RED in the name ..

The Red____s are my favorite. It is not desperately holding on. It is continuity with respect to tradition. How is that desperate?

Weird thing about the Arkansas State v Chattanooga red wolves case, the articles all said a trial would occur this past October but I can not find any articles at all about the results.

Just saying a hypothetical here but suppose Washington stepped in and asked Arkansas to postpone or settle but to do so with a privacy clause until Washington announces the deal after the season.

If you are looking for a stealth bomber you look for the absence of reflections where some should be. There should be a public resolution to the Ark. v Chattanooga case especially since Chattanooga continues to use and market the Red Wolves name and logo

Turns out that Chattanooga and Arkansas agreed to a temporary suspension of the proceedings to allow time for them to reach a settlement. I’d say it is even better. Buffalo isn’t named after William Cody the way Washington is named after George Washington. Buffalo also uses a bison as its mascot and erroneously calls it Billy Buffalo. They even have a bison for their logo and not a buffalo. The entire thing doesn’t make yet nobody cares.

For 83 years, we were called the Redskins- a name that had absolutely no connection whatsoever to the Washington area. Now that we have been forced to jettison the name, the new one has to have connection to the area?

Not seeing the logic.

Redskins had a faint- very, very faint- connection to their origins in Boston. The colors were influenced by those of Harvard and Boston College. The Indian moniker might have been a nod to the Boston Tea Party, but that is one of several stories and its unknowable.

So now historical connections are primary? So much so that we have to settle for a lame name like Commanders? When did this paradigm shift happen?

Not a lot of lakes or sheep in Los Angeles. Utah never was and never will be a Jazz mecca. No magical beings running around downtown DC.

We never needed a regional connection and don't need one now. Besides, how long before the same fuckwads start yammering about our militaristic name or that it is a connection to a guy who owned slaves?
