I agree with that to certain extent. Harbaugh obviously seen the success we had with it and took his opportunity with Kaepernick/Smith situation. Good for him I guess.

I hate to make this comparison, but I see RGIII having a career similar to Vicks - he's electric when he plays, but you always have to worry about his health and availability. Kaepernick and Wilson have similar styles of play, but, so far, have proven a much better ability to avoid injury. Hopefully, RGIII will watch how they avoid hits and learn something.[/quote]

I don't agree with that at all. I was one game against a defense that has not seen it and was not ready for it. And lest we forget, RG3's two "Big" injuries this season, the concussion and the knee, were on scrambles and not read option plays. Granted he took his fair share of big hits running the read option, but you would think in doing so he would be more prepared then when he is looking down filed while scrambling around.

2 touchdowns. one interception. 181 russing yards. 263 passing yards. 444 total yards. That's 100 more than RGIII has had. I'm not dissing RGIII so much as i'm praising Kaepernick. most running backs go their entire careers without a 180 yard rushing game. It was a historic performance.

What does that have to do with anything? I never criticized the read option. If youve paid attention to my posts, i regulalry say people who criticize it are stupid.

Like RGIII, Kaepernick got most of his yards on scrambles. The two have similar frames (RGIII at 6'2/217 and Kaepernick at 6'4/230) in that they are both kind of lanky looking, which would make them both seem more succeptible to injury (as opposed to guys like Rothlesberger/Newton). pre-injury, RGIII almost seemed to relish running for an extra yard or two and taking a big hit. He takes pride in his "toughness" and, rightly so - he's proven to be ridiculously tough, playing through pain. However, I commend Kaepernick because he avoids alot of hits by sliding. RGIII seemed to get better at this as the season went on, but obviously, at that point the damage had already been done.

I just asked this very same question in the other thread, lol! In a way, I'm a bit jealous, but at the same time, I think it's great that other teams who have similar quarterbacks like RGIII, are able to have success with the option read.

You compared RG3 to Vick. Vick is a scrambler and has gained most of his yards during his career in doing so with very little designed run plays. Wasn't the 56yd TD run on a read option?

I am having trouble seeing the controversy in all this. Isn't the answer that RGIII has a somewhat unique skillset (although it appears Wilson and Kapernerck share it and use it to good effect) and that while we need to exploit it, we need to do so in a way that doesn't unnecessarily subject him to punishment? So RGIII needs to do better at recognizing pressure and taking care of himself, and he needs to get stronger in ways that will help against the inevitable hits. And our playcalling needs to strike a balance between using him on designed runs at a time and with execution that will not get him killed with a more traditional offense that is less likely to lead to injury. To be clear, we will have to take some risks with this kind of QB -- it's a classic risk/reward situation. We won't get the full benefit of his speed unless from time to time we let him show it. I believe that there are ways to execute the pistol/read option and pretty much everything else we do that strikes the right balance, and I trust that Kyle will figure it out.

I will add that having Helu back could really help here -- RGIII was, in effect, our change of pace RB to Alfmo, and having an actual RB fulfill that role could be quite helpful. I'd like to see Helu work on being a pass catcher out of the backfield too and for that to become a more prominently featured part of our offense next year. Could give us yet another good option that will freeze opposing LBs, as well as reduce some of the wear and tear on RGIII. And if Helu cannot stay healthy, we need someone to step up and fill that role.

San Francisco has the best Oline in the NFL and Green Bay has a terrible defense...I think that helps alot.

Healthy RG3 puts those numbers up all day against Green Bay.

Kaepernick is great, RG3 is the better passer.

Debating RG vs Kaepernick/Wilson outside the context of value is absurd. Even giving RG the slight nod statistically, the fact Harbaugh and PC got their "RGs" in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, without mortgaging their franchise' futures on a single player who is then literally ran into the ground over a single season, makes those players (and more importantly those two coaches) far superior to what we have.

when it's all said and done, if griff has more rings than kaepernick and wilson, are they still the better value?

Calling Kapernick and Wilson better than RG3 is just flat out ridiculous. Give RG3 those offensive lines and those defenses, good luck even making a comparison. Give either of them our O-line and they would probably be considered prospects at best.

They are both on better teams, but neither is remotely better.
