You are right. Just a couple really terrible plays inback to back weeks that are hard to ignore.

Why in the fuck would he think that the 49ers would accept the penalty when it would be a turnover on downs by declining it?
Watch the interview he says it was 4th down no option for a FG a turnover on downs. It sounds like whoever was on the other side of the comms was confused. I wouldn't be surprised if it was Blough.
Why not just take the 3 points? That came back to bite him in the ass because it could have been a 3 point game at the end. He has proven over and over again that he sucks at game management.
The adage is on the road take the points right?

That said I do get it. You can't trade FGs for TDs and at that point the defense was a sieve.

The things that got me was his use of TOs at end of first half. He used two to stop the clock but when SF converted and had 1st in goal from 1 he didn't use last one, they drained the clock then McCafferty scored next play. They use the final TO they have over 30 seconds left and we've seen that is plenty of time to get into FG range.

In the 4th quarter they went for it on 4th and 8 from around 25 yard line, they got a penalty but then eventually turned it over on downs. I don't get it. At that point with Mike Evans out SF couldn't move the ball you kick the FG with 4-5 minutes left then only need a FG to tie. Instead they spent so much time they were forced to go for a TD.

You had all the momentum. Get the points, then get the stop.

Re: Just another loss post game who gives a fuck thread

Analytics said 4th and less than 11 to go for it in that situation. They put a graphic on screen to say the same.

Would I go for it with that much time left? If I hadn't already been awful on 3rd and 4th down to that point, maybe. But given how the game had gone and that we'd held them to 3 pts 2nd half, I kick the FG then play for the win/tie on the next drive.

He's now playing win or bust football, which is great psychologically if you win (Bears Hail Mary) but it comes back to bite you in the NFL if you keep doing it. Barring a miracle recovery to 11 or 12 wins, I think he's done.

Analytics is a double edge sword. I'm a big believer in but also recognize gut instinct too

Does the analytics in going for it take into account the quality of the team? Like, yeah, maybe the 49ers should go for it, but maybe the Washington Bozos shouldn't?

Re: Just another loss post game who gives a fuck thread

With the way the game was going we needed TDs not FGs. When did everyone go soft on going for it?

4th and 8 with over 4 minutes left in the game says to me take the points and get the stop especially with the way the defense was playing at that point. If we were having trouble stopping the SF offense I'd say go for it and keep their offense off the field. Which is why you go for it at 4th and 2 from the 13 in the first half.

Going for it was fine as we have nothing to lose really. Throwing the ball away on that 4th down play was inexcusable. Providing we're talking about the play in the redzone.

I wasn't against going for it before the half. There was no reason to think the defense would play as well as they did in the 2nd half. And that was in large part because they lost Evans 2nd half.

But I'm just curious in general if the analytics does take into account the quality of the team when making a "recommendation".

Re: Just another loss post game who gives a fuck thread

League analytics generally doesn't take into account the individual teams quality and almost certainly not how the game is going. It'll be statistical analysis of common scenarios (x down and y yards to go) and what is the likelihood of a positive result for each option (punt/FG, go for it). That's why I said above, ignore the analytics, consider how well you've done against that D so far. Even if the general odds are in favour of teh risk, as a coach you have to know what YOUR likelihood of success for each scenario is. We were not converting enough 3rd and 4th downs, so kicking the FG made sense 2 ways; 1) you don't have a pointless drive and the impact that has on the team 2) you have the chance to bottle up their O again (which we did) and then the worst scoring outcome is a tying FG. If you tie, you're going into OT with the momentum (having totally outscored them in the 2nd half) so hopefully you have a great chance of winning.

Going for it on 4th and 8 is not a hill I'd want to be dying on.

You know, and despite some of my own recent rants, I think things aren't as bad as we think. Consider:

1. We lost to Philly (in Philly) by 2 in week 1 (and before they lost Hurts). Even though we didn't play all that well (offense was very slow to get moving), it was a tight game.
2. We lose to Dallas after JD5 goes out -- and the game only got out of hand thereafter (and after a few horrible calls by the refs).
3. We beat last year's champs (Seattle) at home.
4. We lose to Indy -- again, after Mariota goes out injured.
5. We tie NY -- admittedly a game we had no business failing to win.
6. We lose by 6 to the best team in the league (in their stadium) with a chance to win in the last minute that slipped through our fingertips (literally).

Our record isn't great (ad we knew the first part of the season would be rough), but I am coming around to the idea that the sky isn't falling. We were a few plays away from winning 3 of these games (Philly, NYG, SF), and QB injuries hobbled us for the other 2 (DAL, IND).

To be clear, I am not saying our O line is good -- it isn't. And I am not saying the injuries aren't really concerning -- they are. But the only 2 games where we weren't competitive were the ones where our QBs were injured during the game (and, I would add, they were far from the only injuries we were dealing with).

If they show up on Nov. 1 at home against Philly and lay an egg, then I'll have a hard time believing that all isn't lost. (Not to mention, I will be at the game (my first in years), and I'll be mightily pissed.) But I think I've convinced my self not to panic just yet. That said, I definitely want to see them do something to improve our O line performance (no idea what that could be). To me, that is the thing holding us back the most right now as we haven't been consistently sustaining drives and keeping our D off the field (not to mention, we've gotten our top two QBs nearly murdered). With just average O line play, I think we're in a materially different place. Gibbs always understood this -- the year they won the Superbowl with Rypien, he was sacked only 7 times during the entire season. For those who don't remember, it was like sandlot football -- guys running around forever until someone got open. Imagine if JD5 -- a more talented QB than Rypien, Williams, or Theismann -- had that kind of time.

Anyway, a little breathing room, and then time to shit-stomp Philly.

We hired Steve Wilks , who will work Sunday - Wednesday; to assist in game planning. He won’t be at the games.

this why i say 2024 could have easily looked like this season, we are getting ZERO breaks !

if AP's full roster was healthy we be tearing up the nfc east

I was feeling the same way earlier. Injuries and bad officiating have cost us so far. Though the latter has cost others too, it's easy to argue the Indy game was turned on multiple awful calls. Then we get Monday's 'H2H contact is fine' game.

But that said, the lack of OL quality is a big factor, and it showed Monday. Some of that blame has to go on AP (fluffing C and having virtually 0 quality depth along the line). Hopefully Tunsil is back while we can still benefit from him this year, but we should be scouring the FA and trade market to bolster the line. If we don't protect JD5 better, this will be a long painful season.

On that subject, I'm not saying JD5 is getting jittery (he's stayed in the pocket and taken some shots), but some of his decision making and situational awareness has been woeful at times. Throwing away on 4th down, not realising he had to spike the ball v the Giants, missing Diggs and Williams wide open on plays and throwing tough catches instead. Is he maybe mindful that the OL don't have him covered?
