OK, go to the bathroom and spit into the sink. Watch yourself in the mirror. What happens? Your head jerks forward for thrust. Now go watch the replay of the incident in slow motion - no forward thrust.
Actually, I think I saw a little forward thrust on Pittman's part, so maybe they both spit? Maybe Pittman baited him |
Re: The Spitting Ejection
Further to the spitting debate: I've consulted some 'hoodie' friends and they all use the tongue compression/gap teeth' method. No head jerk and only a small delivery of spittle.
I'm here to help. |
Why? I'd say throwing a punch is worse. Does more damage.
Yeah it was stupid of ST to do that, but it should have been OFF-SETTING penalties.
I can not believe you people are taking up for his actions. If anyone from another team spat on a player of ours you would be going nuts calling for their heads. Stop being homers and accept the fact it was a class thing to do, if he did it. The ref that called that game is a very well respected ref in the NFL. I wouldn't have penalized pittman either. Somebody spits in my face, its going to get ugly, REAL UGLY. |
Re: The Spitting Ejection
If the spitting on someone is the most classless thing some of you guys can think of then you are completely out of touch. I can think of tons of worse things that could happen on a field. Get some perspective on this guys. You're saying spitting is worse than trying to injure someone. Spitting is worse than berating or attacking an official. Spitting is worse than cheating. Spitting is worse than exposing one's self. Com'on guys and get real. No one can even proved it happened. I have plenty of reason to distrust Mike Carey and the NFL in these things and little to trust really. When a player takes a blatant swing at a guy right in front of your face and you do not call it then you lose all credibility. NO MATTER WHY HE TOOK A SWING. It has to be called.
It is completely lost that the guy supposedly spit on by Taylor is a convicted wife-beater? Not just a wife-beater but a guy who hit and run his wife's car with the wife and kid in it? I am not saying we shouldn't care if Taylor does something like this just because the other guy is a scum bag but don't act like Pittman an innocent guy who Taylor somehow maliciously attacked. He's a jerk and I personally don't care what anyone does to him. I do care if our players are getting kicked out of games and this should not have been ejectable even if he did do it. Spitting. We're arguing over spitting. Please. |

Who cares if he is respected or not? Can't he make a mistake? And sorry but it is against the rules to engage in a physical altercation during game. For any reason. Not penalizing a guy is saying well you can't take a swing at a guy unless he really deserves it and then it's all cool. That's BS. You take a swing you get a penalty for any reason. Not just the ones that seem ok at the time. Swing = against the rules. Is it ok to chop block a guy because he said something about your family? Or maybe you could just break a guys finger in a pile up because he pissed you off by using some color racial language. In both these cases the victim had done pretty dispicable things but you don't get the option of retaliating. The rule is there to stop retaliating! I won't even argue whether he spit or not anymore. It doesn't matter. Pittman deserves a penalty there and Carey loses my respect for not calling it both ways. It is a CLEAR missed call so why should we trust the NFL would be honest about it. They are in the publicity game and publicly admitting that "hey our Ref blew that one" is never going to happen. They'll back Carey no matter what he says because they have to. If Carey said Taylor had bent Pittman and had his way with him the league would probably go with that. I have no doubt that Carey THOUGHT Taylor did something but I have no doubt that Mike Carey was wrong and it will never be admitted. |
Re: The Spitting Ejection
Washpost reports Taylor will receive a fine of $17,000.
End of story. Everyone go home. Nothing to see here. Move along people. |
Re: The Spitting Ejection
my 2c one more time... the difference between a few hundred players in this league and ST is that ST got caught (or allegedly got caught) doing a bozo no-no. Ref says he saw it, flags ST, ejects ST, and league fines ST. Next time when some hyped up part-time lineman or RB or WR gets in Taylor's face he'll keep his cool and the next pile up he'll sack whack the dude (with a closed fist) when refs are looking the other way. Thus we have the evolution of the badass football player.

Re: The Spitting Ejection
seriously, this shit happens every week under the piles, or worse (people purposefully breaking fingers etc).

Re: The Spitting Ejection
This argument is absolutely rediculous. Someone spits in your face, what do you do. That is one of the most disrespectful things someone can do to you. I didn't say the most ingnorant, I said disrespectful. For someone to try and make it sound ok to spit in someones face is awful. The guy spit, fact. the league fined him for it, and Upshaw didn't argue. That to me says the guy is guilty. Lucky for us, he is still playing against Seattle. They probably should have penalized pittman for the slap, but what difference does it make. He wouldn't have gotten ejected, offsetting penalties. Big deal, Taylor should have used better judgement. He spit on someone for christ sakes, how is that even defendable. there are alot of things that go on during the game that are ignorant, especially at the bottom of piles, but spitting is down right lack of class and respect for fellow opponents.
|
Re: The Spitting Ejection
Point blank... Taylor's earlier TD was the margin of victory in the game. He could have stopped at midfield, taken a crap, picked it up and threw it at Pittman. As long as the fifteen yarder and subsequent ejection did not cost us the game, I wouldn't be as mad at him as some of you are because he spit on a roided out wifebeater.
I'm glad he has no respect for opponents. I don't want to have the nicest safety in the NFL. I want the one that opposing teams are afraid to throw near. |

You guys are killing me. So if Roy Williams came over and spat on Santana Moss, you would look the other way and say well, he is a safety that is ok. You people are absolutely insane to try and convince me its ok to spit on anyone. That is retarded. beating wives, breaking fingers, cheap shots its all wrong. But to spit in someones face is the most irrenhansible thing an athlete can do. Just like betting on baseball is the most frowned upon thing is baseball. Guys get elected to the Hall even though they got arrested 4 times for drugs, or beat their wives, or steal cars, what ever, but Pete Rose, never gets enducted because of betting on baseball. Its one of those cardinal rules. I am in no way comparing the baseball thing to what happened w/ Taylor, but there are just somethings that are just tasteless, and classless and spitting is one of them. Thats is I am done talking about it. You people drink way too much cool-aid when you try and defend someone spitting in the face of another person. Lets see somebody do it to you, your child or I guess something that would hurt the worst, somebody spit on Portis, or Moss and lets see how you react.

I swear, I watched the video many times over just like many of you have, and for the life of me I couldn't see anything come from Sean's helmet.
Am I reading this right? Are you saying spitting on someone is worse than beating your wife?
NO, are you kidding me? they are all horrible. I am saying spitting in someones face is a classless thing to do. You can not think that I would suggest beating your wife is less harmful than spitting. No ones wife was brought into this, its spitting by a football player on another football player. What I am pissed about is people are trying to say its OK. Its not even about football anymore its about peoples morals. this is rediculous that people think its ok for a person to spit in someones face, and you are worried about the retaleation. pushing, grabbing face masks and stuff like that is an everygame occurance. Spitting is not, and should not be tolerated in the least. $17k is light. plus he gets to play(which I am glad as a redskins fan) but morally it sends that the league is putting the individual player above rules and respect of the league. Like I said, its not even the football thing that pisses me off, its people saying its ok. Let somebody spit on one of the Skins and you would have been calling for the same thing Taylor got. I thought when Romanowski did it, it was classless and he should have been fined more than 7500.00 dollars. Wilbon brings up a good point, Portis was fined 20k for socks and visor, but taylor 17k for spitting in someones face? whats wrong w/ that. |

There's disrespect and then there's intent to cause bodily harm. Nobody's defending the act of spitting though. |

I'm just glad to see the Redskins starting to exude a little toughness for once, after being a bunch of pansies under Spurrier. I'd prefer Taylor not spit, but only because spitting means he'll be ejected, not because he flies in the face of some moral standard I set. In fact, I'll go so far as to say I'll gain respect for him if he spat in T.O.'s face on the field, because I friggin hate T.O. It's kind of odd for us to root for Sean Taylor to knock the socks off of guys when they're coming over the middle, and then chastize him for something like this. You don't have to like that he spat, you don't have to defend him, you can be grossed out, you can view him as a punk, but as long as you still want the guy on your defense, you can't act all high and mighty and self-righteous. |

His main point was that you're kidding yourself if you would truly place your moral values regarding spitting above your desire to have Sean Taylor play this weekend. Raise your hand if you want Sean Taylor off the team. Is your hand up? No? Then get off his back. |
Re: The Spitting Ejection
If you dont think spitting on someone is disrespectful, I cant imagine what you think is.
Why do people insist on confusing the real world with the football field? NFL players are not held responsible for playing by the rules the rest of us are. Deal with it. I think it's disrespectful to call someone else's wife a whore, but I have no doubt that kind of stuff gets said across the line of scrimmage all day long. Spitting is no different than any other insult, and I dont think it means anything in the game of football. On the street is a totally different thing and what doesn't fly for you and me is completely irrelevant to the NFL. |
Re: The Spitting Ejection
I think all of us would agree that spitting is disrespectful, and to a person we all would pretty much agree that this has gone on for God knows how long in the NFL.
No, this doesn't obsolve Sean Taylor in any way. It was a shameful act. But I think, perhaps I'm being presumptuous, some of us are a little embarrassed and disappointed about the fact that the sport which we hold so high and esteem and such a despicable and shameful act could co-exist at the same time. |

If you are right about this, 12thMan, then those people are extremely naive. Anyone who thinks dirty and nasty things aren't said and done every game, they've got their head in the clouds. Awful stuff happens at the bottom of the pile. At the bottom of piles, guys shove fingers in eyes, ears, noses, buttholes (no joke), they scratch, they pinch, they hit in the privates, and when they can they hit in the face. They call names and insult family members to provoke other players. All of this goes on in the game we all love. I hope all of us realize this, and I think we all do realize it. And as long as you're still a fan of a game where this kind of thing knowingly goes on, you have no business getting bent out of shape about a loogie in someone's grill. IMO, spitting is mild compared to a thumb up my ass under a pile. Should all of the above be punished with a 15-yard penalty if caught by the ref? Yes. But nobody has any business being morally outraged by a loogie. I find that ridiculous. |

For anyone who thought I was defending the act of spitting on someone let me clear up my thoughts. I wouldn't spit on someone for any reason (well i can think of a few situations that involve my family and such but in those cases if all I did was spit then the other guy ought to feel lucky). But in my opinion it is not nearly as bad as some of you think. It has been suggested that it is the most disrespectful thing that a football player could do. That is simply ridiculous when you consider that players can end other players careers whenever they want basically. Don't tell me that spitting in someone's face, while gross and disrepspectful, is MORE disrespectful than what Romo did to that guy when he ended his career(in practice no less). Is spitting in someone's face classless? Maybe. Can somone have a moment of classlessness and still be an ok guy? Even a classy guy? Yeah I think so. I would imagine just about everyone here has done something that is classless at one time or another. Maybe not as bad as spitting in someone's face or maybe worse but something nonetheless. So let's not act like we can universally castigate Taylor for spitting in someone's face like some holier-than-thou group or morally unchalleneged fans. Some of you have expressed displeasure that his actions were detrimental to the team because he got ejected and I think as fans of the Skins this is where our concerns shoud lay. Not with whether he marginally(my word) disrespected a guy by spitting on him. I don't think what he did merited ejection. Just my opionion but I think enagaging in fights is worse. Does everyone think he ought to be ejected for spitting if he did it? If so then be mad that he alledgedly did something so stupid as to get caught. It wasn't stupid because he spit it was stupid because he got caught. |
