Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
why wasn't Marshall treated as a core redskin? he did play well against Pitts, and can play more then one position, which gives him value. i cant wait to hear the explanation
|
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Lets be honest, we won't really be able to tell whether this was good or bad until the end of the year when we compare:
(1) How he did on whatever team he will have signed on with, and (2) How we did without him, especially at his position. Remember how we fumed at Lavar Leaving??? |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I mentioned H.B. Blades. Blades has showed the most potential in preseason and has been responsible for most of the tackles which still has not allowed a TD in the second half of the preseason games. Take a look at the hit he put on Griffith in the Tennesse game. Marshall is not the only veteran who will be cut in the near future. I think Rock Cartwright, Ade Jimoh and Derrick Blaylock will be cut. Marcus Mason has a good chance to make the team if the Cartwright and Blaylock continue to struggle.
One blown coverage and you are cut? Double standard much.?.? What about the solo tackle for a 4 yard loss by Marshall at the beggining of the 3rd quater? So what you are saying is Anthony Trucks and Dallas Sartz have shown more, are better and have more upside than Lemar Marshall? No. Why do we discard a useful player and keep guys like Reed Doughty who done and shown nothing? I call BS! Marshall said or did something to piss off Williams. Lemar Marshall will be picked up and be playing well for another team this year.
|
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Lemar is a good player but not a starter. And other younger LB's have outplayed him so far. Godfrey is a disciple of Williams from their Titans days together. Even if he never gets in a game, it's a quality move.
|
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Why the fuck did we cut Marshall for this guy? The Chargers released him for some chronic health issues. He is old as dirt on top of that. I didn't think Marshall had deteriorated that bad in his play. Even if it was a money thing he would have been a great backup for Rocky or any other LB for that matter. Godfrey had chronic hamstring problems, what is upgrade here?

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
If you study the cap sheets, I still think that it comes down to clearing up cap room for Cooley. We just drafted 2 young LB's, and one of the 2 drafted looks really good. I am stunned by this move, but I kinda understand the move also. And lets be honest, LM should have lit it up against 2nd and 3rd stringers if he was that good...

They also don't know much about the Redskins. And those sigs. Earthquake would be in Heaven. One note: They have a seperate forum dedicated to free agents which I think is a good idea. The Internet GMs can hang out in there. |

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I like the idea of a sub-forum for free agent talk, once a guy actually signs then talk can move over to the locker room.
Also noticed they have the same mentality when it comes to other teams cuts - once a guy gets cut its all "we should go get him", so its not necessarily a Skins thing. Godfrey has the nickname "Hitman" according to one poster, seems like we will be resting our laurels on being a hard hitting, punishing D this year. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
The eagles also released Trotter today. Wouldn't surprise me to see Marshall in an Eagles uniform...
That's exactly what I was thinking. I remember a few seasons ago, I was watching a Sunday night game against the Titans, I think. Mike Patrick apparently talked to Randall Godfrey and made it a point to say that Godfrey had something of a personal vendetta against the Redskins. Said he's never liked them, that when he played for the Cowboys the Skins would run the score up on them. Whenever Godfrey got a chance to go against the Redskins he'd make it a point to play them "extra" tough. I guess Godfrey has buried the hatchet. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I think we are overanalyzing this. The simplest answer to why he got cut is that he was outplayed in camp.
This offseason, we've made a significant effort to find LBs who are good vs. the pass. Fletcher, we made a run at Briggs, drafting Sartz and Blades, two very underrated cover LBs, who dropped due to size. For two straight years now, Marshall has been awful against the pass. While his prowess against the run could have justified the 4th LB spot, its possible he didn't "fit" our new defense.
Good points. The writing should have been on the wall when they drafted all of those linebackers this year. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I'm not saying that Marshall deserved to start or was some stud, but I do remember a lot of big plays.
#1. In Week 16 of the 2005 season, Drew Bledsoe threw a pass over the middle to Witten and Marshall tipped the ball into Marcus Washington's hands, who then ran about 40 yards downfield. #2. In Week 17 of the 2005 season, Eli Manning threw a pass to Shockey and Marshall picked the pass and ran do the Giants' 20 yard line. #3. In Week 7(?) of the 2005 season, Marshall picked off a pass by Kerry Collins and scampered into the endzone for a TD. I'm sure there are more, but he was a playmaker in 2005.
Yes, those were all good plays, but do we keep players endlessly based on how they performed 2 seasons ago? |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Yes, those were all good plays, but do we keep players endlessly based on how they performed 2 seasons ago?
Exactly. I think the coaches might have had some flashbacks to Holdman getting run over all last year and they didn't want to see the same thing happening to Marshall if he had to play for MW. At 230 pounds I wouldn't have wanted to see him playing the strongside for any significant amount of time. |
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Sheriff we played the giants in week 16 of the 2005 season and dont for get his acrobatic interception in week 17 against the Eagles which lead to a portis 22 yard td on the next play.

Yep, about 300K more. So it definitely wasn't a cap move. I'll bet Marshall ends up playing in the NFC East this year. What a shame. |

We have a good number of guys that can play pass defense but not enough run-stoppers. I like this move, just not on any particularly high level of importance. I rank this at #24 on my list of pertinent roster changes for this year. |

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I heard on the NFL network that the Skins had to act fast on Godfrey because the Eagles want to sign him. Thats all I got to say about that.

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
ESPN reported that the iggles had a special conference for Trotter's release & the owner made a statement.
It would've been nice for the skins to do something similar for LM. He spent his career here & made the team against the odds & even started at 2 positions. Plus, like Trotter, he was popular among teamates. As for the nfc east, I won't be surprised if the iggles or giants look to pick him up, but I will be surprised if he starts there, or somewhere else for that matter. Not many, if any, teams want a linebacker that small. I could see somebody picking him up to use him as a nickel/3rd down LB. He's better in coverage than most. |
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
THIS IS MY TAKE ON IT:
I think that the Redskins, along with being unimpressed with his recovery from his injuries, were impressed tremendously with McIntosh and that caused LM to fall on the depth chart. I believe, as a former starter, he had problems with being placed behind RM. He then began to work with the 2nd teams, and he morale went down. Then, LM went to the staff to express his concern, but they were set in their appraisal of the roster, so they chose, as a measure of good faith, to release him early so that he can get picked up later by another team. Thats a classy move by the front office. If they know that he wont make our team and they arent moved by his performance, let him og early and hope he gets picked up by another team. This also means that the team feels confident about the depth at the LB spot. Thats a good sign if u ask me. |

The only thing i'd note in your scenario is that LM said he was surprised by the cut, so it doesn't appear on the surface that he & the staff really discussed his situation until they decided to cut him. Another thing to consider is that he would be a free agent after this season I believe. Maybe they knew they wouldn't re-sign him so let him go now. I still don't like it. I would've rather seen him go next year when Wynn, Daniels & some others are likely not to be on the roster. |

In any event, the move is perplexing but it will take a year or two to judge the move with any certainty. It could turn out to be a mistake if a starter is injured and our depth proves insufficient. It could also turn out to be a good move if it gives guys like Blades or Sartz more playing time in the preseason and with the second team in practice and one or both of them turns out to be decent. |
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
They have two young players that they feel have done a better job so he got cut. They brought in a Vet to help them and he will be gone next year. For the ones who say we should have just kept him around for another year then cut him Why?

Depth, Leadership and Skill We won three super bowls with veteran backups like Monte Coleman, Kurt Guovea, Mel Kaufmann. When an injury happened, or even if it is just to spell someone for a play or two, there was no drop off in play. It is NOT a fact that Khary Campbell, ANthony Trucks or Dalls Sartz are currently better than Lemar Marshall. It has not been proven on NFL game field that they are better. Practice or preseason is not the same as a regular game. Not the same intensity. Last year we took a chance on two rookie DT's Montgomery and Golsten. When Griffen and Salavea were injured the middle of our defense collapsed because the rookies DT's were not ready. Now the same scenario is in place for the LB's, they may not all be rookies, but there is no back up LB in his prime and with game experience. Godfrey is too injury prone because he is old. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I didn't see him as a run stopper either, he was always better in coverage.
Key play last year when he tackled dallas' barber for a safety. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
What have we seen of Godfrey to think he's an upgrade? I would think if he's an upgrade, then that places him in "starters" category. And if he's good enough to start, why has he been bouncing around the league for the past five years? Unless it's an obvious upgrade, then it's not an upgrade in my opinion. Godfrey won't even if be Skin next year...hell, he might not even make through camp.
Obviously the coaches are privy to something that we aren't as fans.
Well said 12th. I woke up this morning and turned on comcast sports network to see Lemar, Golston, and someone else handing out free Redskins book-bags to some elementary school kids. Wow, only to hear later in the day that one (IMHO) of the better OVER acheivers cut. So, he had a down year last year, who didn't?.?. This guy was a play-maker in 05'. Anyway, thanks for the great memories Lemar. Sorry to see you go. |
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I heard a little line from GW about Godfrey and they had him on some blitz packages yesterday in pratice. GW said he ran a few guy over I guess saying that he got after the QB and went through who every was blocking him.

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I really don't think we should get our hopes up too high about Godfrey. Sure, he probably has some gas left in the tank, but he aint going to be a Pro-Bowler for us folks.
I think he was brought here for a very specific reason and will be used in certain packages. And what the Skins are betting on is, Godfrey is a better fit in those packages than LeMar was. My gut tells me, though, that LeMar hasn't fully bounced back from last year's injury. |

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Here's my take in a nutshell; whatever we think we'll gain in Godfrey, we lose in chemistry with Marshall.
He played for GW, what , seven years ago? You know I'm never sold on these retreads that we bring off the street that played for some coordinator once upon a time. I really hope this guy is good. But if he's just okay, why do we let a LeMar Marshall walk, that's all I'm saying. If Godfrey is just as good as Marshall, why even let Marshall walk? |

Godfrey should be better since he's more familar with playing that side and he's got a lot more bulk to him and he's more physical. |
Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Well, I hope so. I guess Marshall's time was up, that's all.
