Re: Coaching Rumor on SportsTalk 980
No one should be the scapegoat. Various head coaches have struggled in D.C., with and without Vinny and Danny's interference. Marty had full control of the team, yet he struggled. Gibbs essentially had full control and did not meet expectations. Various players have struggled in D.C., only to improve while playing elsewhere. We've had rashes of injuries at inopportune times. In other words, there are a whole host of reasons why this team's record has been mediocre since Danny became majority owner.
I see. So the buck stops nowhere.

Let me ask you this -- if Snyder inherited the team today, and the general manager of the team had the record that Snyder has compiled, what would happen to him? What should happen to him?

The buck does indeed stop at Danny's feet. But I think it's a little too easy to pin all our woes on just one man. For example.......Spurrier anyone?

As to your second point, are you alleging that Snyder is our GM? He performs some GM-like functions, but I don't know how the power structure works and I don't know what decisions Danny made or vetoed. If you have inside info, please share.
For example.......Spurrier anyone?
Exactly. And who hired him?

As to my second 'point' -- it was actually more of a question -- what would Snyder do with a general manager/director of player personnel/team president with a record of 50-62?

It's a simple question really.

Spurrier didn't work out, but most "football minds" were convinced he would do quite well. Snyder gambled and got it wrong, along with the other "experts."

As to your second question, it was rhetorical (i.e., a point). But, to answer it, Snyder would fire himself. That said, I'm not sure why you would indict Snyder's decision-making abilities and then ask what he would do to a GM with a record of 50-62.

I think he meant would Snyder fire Vinny. I'm still not sure why Snyder is so enamored with Vinny after nearly a decade of questionable front office work.
Funny how Vinny "improved" his personnel decisions when Gibbs came back. I know he had success in SF and at Notre Dame, but I'm not a fan.

Re: Coaching Rumor on SportsTalk 980

I think what we will find out once all the dust settles, if GW isn't the guy, is that he was demanding similar control over the franchise as Gibbs had and Snyder wouldn't give up that control...and I don't blame Snyder at all. It's one thing to give complete control over the franchise (that you grew up a fan of and truly love) to someone like Gibbs who the Danny idolizes and is a HoF coach. But it is another thing to give control to someone unproven. GW was not successful in Buffalo and has been inconsistent here.

I have been for setting up the same structure as with Gibbs, Bethard and JKC. Maybe this is what Snyder was trying to set up and GW wouldn't go for it. Obviously this is speculation, but before we dump on Snyder we should wait and see how this shakes out. One thing we should all know for sure is Snyder is a true Redskins fan and he wants to win. We should be greatful for that because I think at least half of the NFL owners are more businessmen worried about profits rather than winning.

So, we just hand the team over to Cerrato? What has he proven.

I think we should just make Cerrato our Head Coach and then all of our problems are solved. ;)
...I'm not sure why you would indict Snyder's decision-making abilities and then ask what he would do to a GM with a record of 50-62.
Well, since he is the owner of the team, and has shown no indication that he's going to sell, the only thing we can hope for is for him to fire himself, Cerrato, and let someone else run the show. So being reasonable about it, I have to afford him at least some level of competence to recognize that he and Cerrato aren't fit to lead this franchise to a competitive status.

But you answered correctly -- he would fire the GM with a 50-62 record. So why should even the most blindly loyal Snyderatto apologist tell us with a straight face that they deserve another shot to guide the front office operations of this franchise when their record is good enough to get anybody else canned?
How do you feel about our roster overall?
Depends on how players develop a few years from now. I realize Cerrato played a part in drafting and free agency. The back-ups seemed to work out pretty well this year. Which means Cerrato may be on to something. However it's to early for me to definitively say he has done great things.

I feel like Cerrato is the main reason GW is on the out. I hope im wrong and I hope the skins play well next year. I just don't understand how a team that is constantly in change can ever get anywhere.

What happens if NONE of the players are willing to redo contracts and we stay over the cap or get cut and go play for Williams

Yes this is very disappointing news one cannot expect to be competitive if you keep starting from ground zero every four years or less we can expect to be mired in the basement for a long time to come it is very sad
So, we just hand the team over to Cerrato? What has he proven.
Slow down there, I am not saying we "hand the team over to Cerrato". What I have been for is setting up a similar structure as with Gibbs, Bethard and Jack Kent Cooke. When Gibbs & Bethard disagreed, they would make their cases to JKC who would make the final decision (he was stroking the checks).

For the last 4 years Gibbs effectively had complete control, Danny wasn't going to second guess Gibbs, he idolizes him. If GW is/was demanding the same control as Gibbs then I agree with Snyder not giving him COMPLETE control. That doesn't mean Cerrato has complete control, it means decisions are made with input from multiple people and Snyder has the final say (he is stroking the checks). I'm not a big Cerrato fan, but he has had some success in the past and he's not the only guy in the Personel Department.

Bottom line is that we may not like the face value of where the HC search appears to be going, but we don't know all the factors behind the scenes. Who knows, if Fassel is the HC, Zorn the OC and Ryan/Schwartz the DC that doesn't seem to be a bad staff. The only major drawback would be compensation for the DC.

It's really really hard to jump for joy with every move we make, knowing that we will throw it out the window the following year. Lets see best three redskins seasons since 91

1999 Norv's 3rd year? 2005 Gibb's 2nd year, 2007, Gibb's 4th year. All those years....absolutely no changes, same QB, same HC, same DC, same OC. Every other year........JIM FASSEL.........STEVE SPURRIER........ Did Snyder ever graduate history, he needs to learn from the past once in a while. Especially if he's the redskins fan that he claims to be.

I dont think many are disputing his ability to succeed so much as its not a positive move for the team right now. I think if the team was in the shape of lets say....the ol' ball coach, during his last year, well then maybe a whole new staff would be welcomed.

yeah i follow. last time we made the playoffs we totally changed the offense and it screwed us the next season. now we make the playoffs again and it looks like we might possibly overhaul the entire coaching staff. im just saying im not going to be all doom and gloom if we get fassel

Maybe Synder is starting to realize all the backlash he would get for hiring Fassel. No point in making a knee-jerk hire. He needs to sit down and straighten things out for a few days.

Every single person that has been interviewed by the Redskins (except Ron Meeks) has been declared the front runner for the job. I've come to the conclusion that none of these people have a clue as to what's going on.

Could it be that Williams wants Ryan here to run his defense? Maybe, but why not let Blache do it? Fassel and Zorn as offensive coaches under HC Williams? Perhaps, but why don't they just announce that Williams has the job?

Is there anyone who thinks, as I do, that if the job belonged to Williams it would have been announced by now?

2 of the 4 could not happen (cheap, that is) unless I am wrong. 2 of the 4 are not promotions and due to NFL rules something would have to signify the promotion (yes! Snyder can create some wonderful job titles), but how long until the League cracks down on that?

Just a thought....

Plenty of teams do it, not sure what the NFL could really do. How do you censor what titles teams give out?

You're right - my point is it allows their current teams to block, bargain, deal... and it is not a cheap ($ wise or draft pick wise) option if the current teams do not want it to be.

Know what I mean?

The NFL is quite aware of the games that teams play with job titles and I really don't think they feel it's a big issue. In the end it helps coaches get promoted.

I think every thread going right now could be paused with this phrase, and we've all heard it from an employer before:

"We'll get back to you when we know something - no need to call us, we'll call you. Not sure when we'll know, we just will and when that time comes, we'll let you know.
Have a good day!"

Re: Coaching Rumor on SportsTalk 980
If Snyder didn't care, Mark Shapiro would add head coach to his Six Flags responsibilities.

Look, the 12thMans and Schneeds of this site who present valid arguments about their concerns-I have the utmost respect for them. Others who say stupid shit like "Danny needs to sell the team" "I'm getting rid of all my Redskins stuff" "I'll never watch another game" and so on-those people deserve to be mocked, ridiculed, and scorned. To the fullest extent. They don't need my respect of course, but if they're expecting it then they're certainly not going to get it with posts like that.

I think I've been pretty clear in saying Fassel is not my top choice. Neither is Williams really.

But what I've been saying (and I think others as well) is that a) no decision has been officially made so quit crying and b) why can't we see how everything plays out first (staff, roster) and make a more informed decision maybe sometime in the spring?

On another note. When I hear the Sean Taylor argument, while I understand it sometimes I can't help but relate it to when people ask "Why Giuliani?" and the answer is just "9/11"
Nice post.

Saying you'll abandon the team if such and such happens is a ridiculous emotional reaction. When the season comes back around, not a single person here will be rooting against the Fassel-led Redskins.

This site is for knowledgeable discussion, let's take a cerebral approach. There are valid points to be made for Fassel, and valid ones against him. Same for Williams. So let's discuss, but making statements like "I quit the Redskins" is absurd and just clutters the board.

Besides, nobody knows what the hell's going to happen. Fassel could be the next Bill Belichick for all we know. So could GW.

Let's discuss it and debate it intelligently.
