Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
Just what does everyone think of Sanchez now?
Best offensive line in the NFL, best running game, #1-ranked defense...these things can make ANY bad QB look great. Look at his pathetic stats. 20 INTs was second only to Jay Cutler. He had only 12 TD passes. His meager 162 yds/gm was near the bottom from starting QBs, ranked just behind the RAMS' Marc Bulger and just ahead of the benched 49ers QB Shaun Hill. Even the Tampa Bay QBs (Leftwich/Johnson) were way ahead of him in that category. How do the Jets win with such a bad QB? Simple, they don't rely on him and run as much as possible to avoid putting him in situations to fail. The Jets have FOUR 1st-round draft picks on their offensive line. It shows. If he had been our QB, he would have far out-mistaked Cutler with probably 35 INTs, IF and this is a BIG IF...he had survived to play all season with our offensive line, or lack thereof. We would have been a 1- or 2-win team...maybe, if we had Sanchez all year (and Collins seeing action when Mark is in the hospital). |
I don't get all the hype. He throws the ball 15 times a game and most of the passes are 5 yards. He makes a play here and there but pretty much any NFL QB could play in the Jets offense. Yeah he's a rah rah guy, big deal. I'm not sold on the guy yet. Clearly the Jets defense and running game are winning games, not Sanchez. I'm glad we didn't take him.
Steelers did the same thing with Ben Rothlisberger his forst year...now look at him 2 championships later!!! |

he's better than most rookie QBs and far superior to ANY of the QBs available in this year's draft. That said, i'm very happy with Orakpo. |
Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
Here's the thing everyone is missing about Sanchez. He made some critical throws yesterday. Most notably, the key 3rd down during the 4th quarter, and the clutch TD pass to put them up 10 to 7. Yes, he only threw for like 93 yards, but most of those passes counted. Sanchez has one receiver, besides Jericho Cotchery he doesn't have a dependable go to guy.
Also, Sanchez is a remarkable leader, his enthusiasm and positive attitude reverberates throughout his entire team. That's something that Jason Campbell is missing. He's to laconic to be a leader in this epoch of the NFL, where leadership at the QB position is vitally important. One of my female friends who's also Redskins fan summed it up like this. "Jason Campbell is the type of guy you want marrying your daughter, not someone to lead you through the hostile trenches of the NFC east" |
Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
One more thing I'd like to add. Living in the Bay-Area, naturally I listen to local sports radio stations daily. And the myriad of excuses that JC's fans make for him, are the same excuses being made for Alex Smith. It's everyone else's fault that the team isn't winning but his. They blame the offensive line, even though Sean Hill played behind the same offensive line, the only difference his, he's 7-0 at home, has an overall winning record, while Alex Smith is deplorable at home, and has a losing record. I can't wait to hear everyones excuses for JC next year, once O-line isn't an issue. He's still going to play to conservative, unable to read defenses, and will fail to lead us to one playoff victory.

Difference is that Roethlisberger was good right out of the gate. 15-1 record along with a 98.1 QB rating. Not saying that Sanchez will be a bust, but we'll see how well he does as he's given more responsibility next year. |

Well, I'm sure Shanahan will not hesitate to pull Campbell. Although I'm glad to hear that you can't wait for him to fail. Regardless of whether JC does well or not, this team is not going to be built overnight in one season. We have a lot of holes to fill, and it will start with the o-line. |

While were at it, I doubt he'll be quite what Flacco, Henne, and Ryan were in 2008 (though Brian Brohm looks to be an epic overdraft at this point), and I doubt he'll turn out better than Kolb, Quinn, or Edwards from 2007. There's just certain things a quarterback needs to do to have any sort of trust from his coordinator. Sanchez, at this point in his career, cannot do those things and I would be stunned if he turned out to ever amount to anything in this league. With that said, it's hard to quantify what the playoff experience he is getting now will do for his long-term development. Enough to overcome his inability to throw under pressure? Doubt it. But the Jets have risked it all (and I mean a likely SB title) with Sanchez this year, so maybe they'll get something for their trouble. |

It's horrible that Skins fans place all the blame on the line. Especially when their so called franchise QB can't complete a pass over 10 yards. |

No, a few Skins fans are like you, who think the problem lies solely on the QB. Luckily, your boy Vinny is no longer in charge and will build the line and rebuild the team in the next two years. Right now, Campbell is at best a transition QB, and whether he stays here or not will depend on his performance. Regardless, we need to build this damn line if we want to do anything in the passing game (with or without Campbell) and the running game (with our without Portis). |

This is an old, tired debate. Sanchez is not the reason the Jets are winning, nor has he cost them an important game. He has the same ingredients Flacco had last year, an outstanding D, run game, and OLine. His stats are worse than Campbell by far, but the fact is he is in the Conference championship. If you ask me what that proves, it is that this game is played and won by teams, not by a single positional player. The focus on Campbell or any "skill position" is opposite to this fundamental truth of football, it is a TEAM sport. I know Shanahan and Allen understand this concept, so if they want to leave JC, a solid team player if not an exceptional qb, I am ok with that. We can do mighty things if we have a leader who is leading our 53 men into the weekly battle. |

I never said the blame was entirely JC's. I think we all agree that our problems with the offensive line need to be rectified. The in-ability to read a defense has nothing to do with a deplorable line. The inability to hit open receivers down field, even when you have time - can't be blamed on those who're blocking for him. That's the point I was making about Campbell. As you stated he's at best a transition QB. I predict that he'll lose the starting job to Bradford/Clausen before our first regular season game. |

Negative. If we're going to build a good line, I think we need a first round lineman. |
Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
honestly i think my dog could qb the jets, all they need is someone to out the ball in the rb's hands, and ocasionally throw a pass. sanchez may eventually be a good qb, but as of right now he hasn't done anything to show that he will be anytime soon. when you have a team with an outstanding offensive line, great running game, and good d you really don't need a manning or elway behind center for you, just ask mark rypien

True, but JC isn't the answer and Shannahan will address our need for a franchise QB in this years draft, first and foremost. |

You cannot be serious. He settled with Griese and Plummer before drafting Cutler. His offense is predicated on the run first. There is no way in the world that he drafts his future QB without first purchasing the insurance for him. Yeah,! I stole that from "The Blind Side" What? |

Which brings me back to your original post when a lot of us were discussing the Jets. You develop the line and then you bring a QB. You could do both this upcoming draft, but I feel like you gotta take that franchise tackle with the first. Which I believe is what Shanny is going to do, since he really didn't need to keep Campbell. I know the decision is not final, but I don't think he's going to pass up the chance to draft a franchise tackle. |

Yeah,! I stole that from "The Blind Side" What?
The type of offensive lineman needed for the zone blocking scheme aren't the prototypical lineman you'll find in the first round. Shannhan had a dominating offensive line during his entire 14 year tenure in Denver. And during that 14 years he only drafted 2 o-lineman in the first round. Historically new Coaches have always brought in their own QB's, instead of settling with their inherited QB's (Superstar QB's like Manning are the exception). There's no way IMO that we'll not draft Bradford or Clausen. There's not a single draft board out there that shows us picking a lineman. |

When was the last time the Redskins drafted according to the draft boards? Granted there's a new front office, but still. Given the terrible shape our o-line is in at the moment, it would be hard for Shanahan to pass up on a guy like Okung if he's there at #4. I know people love to use the cliche "coaches always bring their own QB's", but in this case I hope Shanahan stays away from that and builds the line first. Honestly, us taking a tackle with that #4 would be a good sign that things have changed at Redskins Park. |

Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
One reason the mocks mostly have us taking a qb is because Okung is gone before the fourth pick. A lot of what we do will be determined by the 3 teams in front of us.
Yes, I did learn from Capt Obvious. |
Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
Mock drafts are routinely mistaken, especially when they appear before the Combine. Who mocks have us taking is not a very good predictor at this point in time.

Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
Mock drafts are pretty worthless. I'm always amazed how some get so caught up in them.

Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
We will find out this weekend how good of a QB Sanchez is. The Jets will probably have to throw the ball to keep up with Peyton Manning. 93 yards passing won't cut it in the AFC Championship vs. the Colts.

The Colts aren't going to have an easy time against the Jets D. And if I'm the Colts D I'm not looking forward to stopping the Jets running game. The Jets have gotten this far with a simple formula, I think they'll lose but they definitely have a good shot. |
Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
We weren't debating the veracity of a mock draft. We were debating who the sportswriters thought the Redskins would draft. Also, Mock Drafts are generally correct on the first 3 picks. After that, it's gets tougher to predict who'll draft whom.

We draft #4 though...honestly it all will depend on what St. Louis does. If they go QB, the Lions will take Suh in a heartbeat. Based on Tampa's pick, we could very well have our pick between Bradford and Okung. |
Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
There also is a free agency period before we even get to the draft. If we sign a particular QB, for example only, we might be far less likely to go QB at #4. Same argument for left tackle, etc. Mock drafts offer soft guidance at best.

Well I was thinking (more like hoping) that Tampa Bay would be enticed to take Berry at #3. As I mentioned before, if this is the case then the picks would be #1. A QB for the Rams (Clausen or Bradford), #2. Suh to the Lions, #3. Berry to the Bucs, and we would get our pick of best tackle (Okung) or second best QB. In this case, if Okung is horrible for some reason, with Bradford there I could see a QB-starved team (i.e. Bills, Seahawks) wanting to make a move to #4. |

First of all, it's Shaun Hill. Secondly, I haven't heard a single person on this site who realistically thinks that Campbell is the future of the franchise or a Manning-esque player who is going to lead the team to greatness. How many times does it need to be said? The guy is serviceable and games *and yes, even championships* can be won with a guy like that in there if you get your priorities straight in all the other areas. I love when guys come out of the woodwork to create these straw man JC boosters who don't exist. Most of us who aren't calling for the guy's head on a pike merely think he's tough, mobile, has good character, and is accurate enough to get the job done playing Redskins football. That is, if we get back to what that means and get a decent O-Line and running game going again. But hey, don't let that get in the way of an opportunity to drop an advance "told you so" in here. |
As a rookie, Sanchez is a better leader/player than jason is after 5 seasons. Period!
I'm sorry but making these generic base-less (sp?) statements are getting really old. Sanchez in this Jets team is a better player than a lot of other QBs. I'd like to see what Sanchez would have done with our terrible offensive line and spotty running game. Very few QBs would be successful in the mess of a team that we had this past year. Sanchez should consider himself lucky not to have been drafted by Washington and turning into another Patrick Ramsey. Instead, he will develop into a very good (if not great) QB in a team that had already built an outstanding offensive line, a great running game, and an elite defense. I hope that the success of this Jets team has taught our owner (and a few simple-minded fans) the importance of building up a team in the trenches, before bringing in a young talented QB. |
