Re: "Jason Campbell struggles against the Steelers"
The thing that worries me is little details like this quote-
"The first play of the game, one thing I was impressed by was his speed," Campbell said. "I didn't know he was that fast. When I let it go, I thought it was going to hit him in stride. Actually, I wish I could've thrown it maybe a yard, two yards deeper. . . . Now, you get a feel for a guy." Okay, after OTAs, Training Camp, and 2 weeks into preseason practices- NOW you've got a feel for a guy? I know he's been injured somewhat, but sheesh - how slow can you be in getting a "feel" for a guy? |
Re: "Jason Campbell struggles against the Steelers"
The problem with Campbell is - he is too conservative with his decision-making and even with those conservative plays, he fails to execute well. At this point in time (and I believe he's had enough time), he is not a starting qb let alone a franchise qb. He just fails to keep drives alive on a consistent basis because he plays too scared and is not efficient enough to hit the "safe" throws consistently.
I don't understand how he's gotten to this point of the way he plays - having an excuse ready when he makes a mistake, but he just needs to stop making excuses, own up to his mistakes and just make plays. It's just so frustrating to watch - season after season of campbell trying to learn to be a quarterback in a live game. |
Re: "Jason Campbell struggles against the Steelers"
... and best case scenario for me is that he makes me a liar from all the negative things I've said about him.

There's a difference between complaining and making excuses. The tired excuse from year to year is he is still learning and he just needs to just make adjustments next week. |

Maybe as an answer to a reporters question but not just throwing it out there as an excuse for poor play. I know theer is a difference between the two. Campbell might not be a franchise QB or even a decent staring option, but one thing he doesn't do is make excuses. The fans( myself included) are the ones making excuses for him. IMO JC is a class act who does, says all the right things( aside from the play on the field) that teams want in a franchise QB. Thats why I think the fans want him to succeed so bad.

I like Jason Campbell too and I want to see him succeed more than anything, but there comes a time when you just need to perform. And the time is now (even though I really think the time to perform should be a player's opportunity to play in his first game). If that means that there is a better qb to replace him (even on the current roster) then replace him. He just isn't consistent enough IMO to get this team to the next level (even as a defensive team). |
Re: "Jason Campbell struggles against the Steelers"
Yeah Cutler will struggle this yr, not as much for being in the new offense but for lack of wr's. Other than Hester who is a project wr i cant name one. I know they drafted Iglasias and maybe he can help but its not a stellar group of targets by any means. He has a good TE and he has a nice young RB but thats about it. Our wr corps is head and shoulders above what Chicago has.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Good QB's make Good WR's. There are very few guys in the league that can turn a bad QB into a good QB. Randy Moss in his prime was the best example (I don't think he's capable anymore though of getting a 2nd string QB multiple 90+ rating games on his own anymore). Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, Anquan Boldin, and Steve Smith are among the very small number of receivers that have proved they can succeed with poor QB play. Trust me there will be guys in the Bears receiving core that will be on a fair amount of fantasy teams by mid-season. Though I agree that we have a much better receiving core then the Bears. Still 99 times out of 100 that means nothing if you don't have a guy that can get them the ball. |
Re: "Jason Campbell struggles against the Steelers"
While I am a bit disappointed with JC's play, my expectations of him are to be good enough to compliment our strong defense. It would be nice if he becomes a slinger that throws for a ton of yards and touchdown, the reality is that we need Campbell to be just a bit better than last year in order to win enough games to get us to the playoffs. We have a strong (possibly elite) defense, and a good running game, we just need the passing game to compliment that. Right now he is the best choice we have at QB, and he should be kept in the game until we are eliminated from the playoffs. If he does falter this year, then we will need to blow up the offense and start from scratch for 2010.

yeah i agree with this. JC, Zorn and the recievers need to show alil something to keep teams from stacking 8 in the box and nullifying portis and the running game. if this is a copy cat league, i think teams will stack the box until JC and the skins show they can make them pay. in his 2nd yr with zorn all JC has to do is show alil quicker decision making and accuracy and we are in a good spot. not alot, just alil bit of improvement from last year. is that too much to ask? |

He still doesn't seem to have the accuracy with the short to midrange stuff. If I were the opposing defensive coach, this would be a no-brainer. Stack the box, have the d-ends pass-rush all day (to take away campbell's best skill: the long ball). And the combination of the de's in the backfield and stacking the box would nullify the run game. All that is left is the mid to short range stuff which would be JC's weakness. If the redskins offense beats you, then that would mean JC had a very good day at his known weakness. |

This gameplan is mind bogglingly terrible. First of all, assuming DE's are going to get there every time they pass rush is a terrible way to gameplan (otherwise no one would ever blitz) so it effectively takes nothing away from the offense outside of a few plays when they actually apply good pressure. It also opens up gaping holes to run/cut back through. DE's in the backfield opens up the running game because they run by the running back and open holes, and "stacking the box" involves adding exactly 1 more player to the box, a safety, so there is absolutely no way pass rushing on every down would ever be an effective deterrent to a running game. On a well executed run play, you'd have a running back making it to the second level pretty much clean by cutting back into the holes the ends vacated, if a lead blocker accounts for the linebacker in that situation, the rusher's out of the gate and you just got gashed, probably for 10+, possibly for 6 points. I guarantee if you showed this gameplan to Clinton Portis he be salivating. |

Far be it for me to beat up on ole Soup, but it wasn't the O-lines fault that he didn't convert with the Steeler's first team D playing.

Who the heck is in the box other than that safety? - the damn linebackers who would be "stacked" to play the run. And guess what the giants and every other good defensive-coached teams are planning to do (and have done)? And it doesn't matter how well the offensive line does in pass protection. If the de's are teeing up on the qb all day, they're going to look like shit like last year. Naturally the o line is going to look better in run-blocking, but that's the small sacrifice that the opposing defensive line can concede if they can have the linebackers and safeties stopping the run. |

Not to play devil's advocate, but I was trying to defend Jason to see how he threw the long ball in the past -- and I guess I went pretty far back to his draft reviews.. But these are interesting to look at.. I guess he had some of the same problems 4-5 years ago.
Overall: Campbell is a coaches son who also stared in basketball in high school. ... Uhh, several intelligent football analysts(including Ron Jaworski and Sean Salisbury) were throwing Campbell's name around as a candidate for league MVP at the midway point of the season last year. I think that's a bit higher praise than "he doesn't turn the ball over". And I still can't figure out why it's so hard for people to correlate the fact that the offensive production went downhill last season, when the line started falling apart. Portis' production fell off significantly too. It's hard to produce any kind of offense behind a beat up offensive line. |

Re: "Jason Campbell struggles against the Steelers"
I'm worried about Campbell. I think hes one of the 5 worst qbs in the league. Our O line starters looked good and so did our run game on the first series, but teams will stack 8 in the box on us and we'll be screwed. Our D can't keep teams scoreless. My only hope is if we miss playoffs that we get rid of Zorn and JC and convince Cowher (a real football coach) to man the ship. I hope I am wrong though. I definitely wouldve been happy if we got Cutler, but two first rounders wouldve been a steep price given our other weaknesses.

Your ability to analyze the 13 passes he's made this preseason must be superhuman if you're already able to determine that he won't succeed. |

On the contrary, he's had more than just these 13 passes to analyze. These 13 passes were just an opportunity for him to prove the judgments on him were wrong (that were made before the preseason began). |
Re: "Jason Campbell struggles against the Steelers"
I absolutely love how some people are just freakin the F out over just a handful of plays. I guess there are a few fans who are writing the season off already based on less than a full quarter from the starters. I for one will withhold my judgement of Jason and the rest of the team until after a few games that actually matter.

Yes, that is absolutely my feeling. I couldn't care less what he's doing right now because you play preseason games to work on different things. They're glorified practices. If this carries over into the season I'll start to doubt him. I'm prepared for whatever happens at this point. I want him to succeed and it's got little to do with Jason. I like him because if he is good, that will mean the Skins found their QB for several years (not one or two like Collins or a pipe dream like Colt/Chase (I loved both of them in college, btw, no bias against them)). I do think it's unfair the revolving door of coaches and systems he's been in, but the bottom line he has to prove he can play this season or he's gone and I've accepted that. That said, I don't know that he was dealt a fair hand here, but that doesn't mean he should get a 2nd contract. Finally, I'm confident he will prove that he can get it done this season, but I don't have a crystal ball and I don't know. |
