I do not pretend to know either Marty Schottenheimer or Danny Boy. However, I do know several folks who know both of these men well. According to those folks, Marty is VERY difficult to work with and particularly difficult in a situation where you put him in charge of something. In that scenario, his idea is that he is the only person on Earth who should be allowed to make even the most trivial deicsion about what goes on there. AND by reputation, he is not the most tactful person on the planet when it comes to telling people to stay out of his business. According to other folks, Danny Boy thinks that his money makes him the smartest guy in the room under almost any circumstances. But according to those same folks, he's not the smartest guy in the room - - ever. And because he thinks he knows just about everything, he cannot abide people making decisions that do not involve his "approval" or "impramatur". Admittedly, I have distilled info here to keep these descriptions brief but if you look at the two of them and imagine how those folks might work well together, you will see that it is highly unlikely. They tried it once; it didn't work; neither one is interested in burying the hatchet - - unless it is between the eyebrows of the other one.
But....if DS is not getting anyone worth a crap and he does come to the realization that he needs to just write the checks and allow someone else with football knowledge to build the team then maybe M.Schottenheimer is the man to know when to say "Get lost DS." Otherewise we will see more of the same enablers. Saying..."Whatever you want DS." |

The prospect of VC/LeDan with the personnel action, and Gruden with coaching duties? Does that sound to you like a successful FO family?

In the short term perhaps. I can see Gruden firing up the team and getting them top play lights out for a couple of years. But that will fizzle out rather quickly It's probably not the most ideal scenario |
God help us. I hope these guys don't give up the world to get Bradford. Our first pick needs to be on a franchise LT. EDIT: What did Gruden's TB teams bring to the table outside of Monte Kiffin's defense? Not a whole hell of a lot IMO. |
Re: Updated/Merged: Shanahan Rumors (Will He or Won't He?)
I personally have always liked Jon Gruden. Seems like he stated before that he patterned his offense around aspects of Joe Gibbs' offense (I remember hearing that but don't remember where.) He's a fiery coach who would definitely get his players excited to play. I was disappointed in his Tampa Bay teams in the past few years, but if it did have to do with the team being a little too frugal in the spending department, then I can see how that would limit Gruden's talent. Of course, seems like New England doesn't spend a lot and always seems to keep ticking along, so that shows you how much I know about free agency spending. But the long and short of it is, I just want a good seasoned veteran coach who can stay with the team for a long time. Gruden is young and has won a Super Bowl before. Gibbs was out of the league for way too long to really be effective, and Shotty has never been to the big dance.
I don't know...I just don't want this team losing anymore. |

I REALLY would like to proceed with an AssKickin' GM and let him do the coach selection work, albeit...swiftly
Well part of it is just a matter who you get along with, happens all over the place, and Snyder and VC get along. Another, bigger, part of it is that even though VC has been around for the last decade for the most part it's only been the last two years that he had the final authority that he has now. And I know what you're thinking, if he's going to be patient with Cerrato why not Zorn? I don't know the answer. I do still suspect though that he (Cerrato) sooner than later won't have quite the input he does now. Again, unless someone like Jerry Gray becomes our full time head coach...and that would be a stunner. |
Re: Updated/Merged: Shanahan Rumors (Will He or Won't He?)
Perhaps....Dan can learn to love another?
I fear with Vinnie still in place, regardless of the other changes made-long term, it's just more of the same |

An unsettling statement to be sure! Cerrato's presence means Snyder continues to have a heavy hand in personnel, and if Vinny loses sway within the franchise then won't Snyder just dominate personnel decisions completely? I guess w/ Gruden's hands off approach to personnel it means Snyder would be free to do things his own way completely. |
Re: Updated/Merged: Shanahan Rumors (Will He or Won't He?)
I like Gruden. Like SS said he'd at least inspire the players. He won in Oakland for christ's sake.
In the end, however, whether or not the next HC demands a change in the FO, I do. |

Re: Updated/Merged: Shanahan Rumors (Will He or Won't He?)
D.Snyder wont be fired or should he. He does everything he can to win and thats open his wallet without dispair. If only he would let go of his JERRY JONES book "How To Run A Football Team" now with that said. V.Cerrato is the main problem he is not good at what ever he does which he has proven now for some years now.
I hope that M.Shanahan does not get the job. I like Holmgren as a G.M and CHUCKY as our Head Coach especially if he brings his own guys in, and not have them already there waiting as we have seen with Coach Zorn. Shoot even Holmgren and Zorn would work and I just WANT Cerrato out. |
Re: Updated/Merged: Shanahan Rumors (Will He or Won't He?)
Shannahan seems to have a mixed record with his draft picks. Usually they're either really good or they can't make it in the league (Maurice Clarette). He seems to be able to develop quality offensive lines which is a huge plus for me. His ability though to develop late round running backs seemed to fall off a little near the end of his tenure with Denver.
I will say he's done a great job drafting LB's (Al Wilson, Ian Gold, and DJ Williams). He's also found a few good recievers (Rod Smith, Ed Mcaffery, Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal, Tony Scheftler). QB's always seemed to do well under Shannahan or at least over achieve. Greise, Plummer, and Cutler all seemed to have their best years under Shannahan. The thing he absolutley seems to suck at is finding D-lineman (Javaris Moss). In fact I remember for the last few years the Bronco's were constantly looking for D-lineman to help fix their defense. Of course if he comes here that will have been taken care of. |

Re: Shanahan likley to be 'Skins next Coach
He was? They're average. At best. And those championship Redskins teams were built by Bobby Beathard. Aside from a few savvy free agent pickups, Casserlyy couldn't draft worth a toot.
Not to knock Beathard down, because he is one of the better executives the leagues has seen in the last 30 years, but he had some brutal draft picks that we'd ripping left and right if this site was around back then |
Re: Updated/Merged: Shanahan Rumors (Will He or Won't He?)
Gruden is a tough hard nosed coach but his play calling is shit. At this point though anyone is better than Zorn.

Re: Updated/Merged: Shanahan Rumors (Will He or Won't He?)
:frusty: I don't like Cerrato as much as the next guy but I can tell you this, if DS can get away with bringing someone in and keeping Cerrato he will. If he hits rock bottom and can only get the HC he wants if Cerrato is removed then it's a toss up but I bet he keeps Cerrato. I'm not sure what freaky shit is going on between DS and Cerrato but when all the fans, media, ex-coach's, and other owners can see Cerrato as a bad GM then why can't DS?
The only thing I can remotely come close to understanding it is if someone told me I had to never talk to my best friend again. Even though thats not what it would be like. He could still talk to him and play hand ball or toss each others salad but remove him from the FO and put him in charge of his precious amusement park since it is failing or put give him the job of helping with contracts. I just don't get the fascination with Cerrato that DS has? does he feel sorry for him cause he looks and sounds in the media like he's special ed? Is this DS's charity work? I just don't get it. If everyone was telling me to fire him and bring in a true GM and they would take the job...guess what...don't let the good door hit you where the good lord split you. Basically, it's Cerrato that is holding back this team from ever getting a decent HC. |

I don't have a problem with that...it's the team sitting at #2 or #3 and throwing in our second rounder to move up to #1 to get him. :) |

Umm, Millen was a player who was in the trenches battling it out against other lineman. In other words he earned his ring. Vinny got his by being at the right place at the right time. Then 4yrs later got fired cause the team sucked. Pick your poison why but I'm sure he was partially a part of it. |

I would be really happy if Snyder did the right thing and hired Russ Grimm. Our O-line would be fixed overnight. He deserves the chance to coach here in some capacity.

hey, i'm just saying, he's been part of a championship nfl team. i'd like to think he learned a few things while being part of it. |
Re: Updated/Merged: Shanahan Rumors (Will He or Won't He?)
So far I haven't seen anyone make a real argument for Grimm.. just that he's a Gibbs coach and that he'd fix the o-line
he didn't fix the o-line in pittsburgh or arizona that much, you don't hire a HC to fix the line, you hire a line coach and get competent talent evaluators |

Apparently he has not. Don't be fooled by the fact he only got the title like a yr ago. Vinny, being the "best friend" of said owner, had a lot of advise for DS I'm sure even though he didn't hold the title of GM. His time has come and gone. Take away ALL Redskins related duties from him. Make him exec of the theme park or exec of Redskins1 but move him on out. |
