Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
KWII was traded for a 2nd and a 5th, I think that's similar to what we could get for CC.

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
For a 2nd rounder no. For a 1st and a 3rd, you'd be stupid not to consider it.

No dice for anything less than 1'st round or second and third rounder. Honestly though why would anyone in their right mind want to trade him? If nothing else this season has shown it's worth having two quality TE on your team. I love Yoder but he isn't going to make the big catches down the field and YACs like Davis is now. Great TE aren't a dime a dozen folks and 2 is better than one. |

He was nowhere near as productive as Cooley and missed a lot of playing time due to motorcycle accident and then a staph infection. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
it's silly to think anyone would give the skins a first and a third round pick for cooley or for anyone on the skins roster.(maybe orakpo).
keepers on offense: cooley davis thomas kelly moss campbell dockery heyer everyone else is on the fence. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
it would be a good trade, but there might be a lot of backlash in the organization, getting rid of a guy like cooley. no loyalty.
|
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
i'd much rather see us using davis and cooley at the same time ... davis can easily split out wide or line up in the slot...
theres no need to get RID of an offensive weapon... having both these guys on the field, and Tood Yoder(who catches the hell out of passes and blocks well) to spell them is a dengerous, dangerous recipie at TE next year. no way u trade a guy like cooley. no loyalty as said above. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
davis was recruited by USC as a wide receiver and then converted to a tight end, he was one of the top ones in the country. im sure he could line up in the slot, and im sure hes had plenty of experience with that.

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
with the way fred davis is playing right now....still no lol Cooley's too good to trade away and I want to make sure Davis isn't a one hit wonder, technically he's only really played well the last 5 games or so...wait and see

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
We would have one of the best red zone offenses when Cooley comes back, assuming of course that Sherm stays. If they would play Marko Mitchell then our red zone offense would be scary. People keep talking about Davis, and they rightfully should, but they forget that during Sherm's first game against the Eagles on MNF Cooley was poised for a big game. I think that it's in our best interest to find a way to make the 2 TE offense work.
On top of I think people are also forgetting the fact that if a CBA goes through Cooley will count $4 million against the cap if he's traded. Plus even if we were offered a 1st and 3rd there is no way I would want to accept it if Vinny was calling the shots. God knows what those picks would turn into, maybe a Safety or QB. |

I would be furious if we traded Cooley even though it would be a good value trade. He is a tremendous asset to the organization in such a broad range of ways. |

The question for me right now is why not? Why not when you have an up and comer in Davis who is younger and cheaper, and if you could get multiple picks in return for CC it would only make sense to see what's out there. I'm not saying you push hard to deal him, you just toss a line out there and see what you bring in. |

He's charismatic, funny, durable (never missed a game before this year), hard working, has glue for hands, is a perennial pro bowler, he's only 27 and is on a hall of fame pace numbers-wise. He's our best offensive player IMO. There is no downside to Chris Cooley at this point. It would be hard to refuse a 1st and 3rd, but at the same time I think it's kind of moot to argue. I don't have stats in front of me, but when do teams trade a 1st and 3rd for a TE? Yeah, Fred Davis has had a few solid games, and looks like he'll be very good. But we don't know what we're going to have going on with WRs next year. Tana and El could be gone. Kelly and Thomas are still largely unproven (although I think we've got something with DT). Let's keep two very good TE's for at least one more year. It can only help the passing game. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
i dont think the front office will even consider trading cooley, no coach would want to get rid of someone like cooley.

Honestly, I think a lot of people are letting Cooley's likability cloud their judgement on this one. As a pure football move if someone offered multiple picks with one being a 1st or high 2nd rounder and you are also able to dump Cooley's contract, it really isn't debatable. Especially with him coming off a season ending injury. Davis is younger, faster, healthier and cheaper. |

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
To me though, as big a reason for looking to move Cooley as Davis' improved play is Cooley's trade value. Of which Rock has none
What? are you crazy? have you not been over to the "Ganther/Rock" thread recently? It's so obvious Rock is the best thing we have as a RB right now. Everyone wants him. How on earth would you think he has no trade value? I hate questions like these. If it's just one or just the other then yes I'm looking for youth. But I don't think Cooley's legs are done yet. I'd much rather see what this team looks like with 2 excellent TE vs. throwing one away with out even exploring how dangerous we could be with 2. I'm all for "Rebuild". Get rid of the old and bring in the new. But are we going to see a true "Rebuild"? I'm betting we see more of the same. SSDD. Only under a new HC. Plus if the team picks a LT in the 1st round and a RT in the second, the third is taken from the Jarmin supplement pick, As far as I'm concerned we can pick OL across the board. Ganther has turned out to be a nice RB. Most likely JC will be tendered the one year because of the CAP being gone. Basically we are set at QB, RB, WR, TE for atleast one more year. My only concern is getting another RB and QB for the future if JC doesn't stay. All the young defensive line players are starting to shine. The young CB's are starting to come into their own. We might need a FS and a true SAM or SLB. Wilson is looking good but maybe if the LB's we picked up last year don't pan out we will need to bring in some UFA's and take a look at them. |

I still can't stand the guy, and his mismanagement of contracts, coaching staff, and O-line has been pretty pathetic, he has made some good moves worth noting. Makes me sick to say that, full disclosure. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Cerrato has little to nothing to do with the contracts.
|
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
I agree with GM that we are never going to get an offer like this (unless Zach Miller suddenly finds religion and moves to India to do yoga). Were it to be offered to us we would take it, and the emergence of FD only makes that more of a no brainer.

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Moss, Thomas, Kelly, Mitchell, Davis, Cooley, Yoder
take cooley out and it gets LESS appealing, its a fact... he's the 2nd best, if not the best, player on that list. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
yeah i would do it, but no one would ever give that up. He would bring a second round pick, most likely.

I'm not supportive of trading a known product for an unknown product(s). Davis being cheaper is a silly argument IMO. First off if you get a 1st round pick for CC it's likely to cost you just as much as CC is getting paid and even more so if the pick is a top 10 pick (the average guaranteed money given to a 1st round draft pick last year was around 11 million). Secondly, if you just want more draft picks, 2nd/3rd rounder, that's cool but we all know outside the 1st round the draft is a crap shoot. I wouldn't take a chance on these types of players with a player of CC's caliber as wager. Always keep quality players unless they're disgruntled or old in the tooth (27 isn't old). You can't teach experience. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Nice post saden1. What happened to wanting depth? So now if we have good depth we trade our starters? I think Davis has shown this year why teams with good depth keep playing well even if their starters go down.

No one is giving us a high first rounder for him. I think somewhere in the second round is the most likely scenario. No second rounder is getting Cooley money (or even late first rounder). |

Yeah we're likely talking about a lower 1st rounder, at best.
KWII was traded for a 2nd and a 5th, I think that's similar to what we could get for CC.
Both have similar career stats, but Cooley has almost twice the number of touchdowns. KWII has had constant injury issues whereas Cooley's been healthy up until his injury this year. I think its good to compare the two, but Cooley is a superior player - he'd garner more than a 2nd and 5th.
A team wouldn't trade us club level tickets for Rock. Trading Cooley is possibly an option because he is a pro-bowler but I would have to see a pretty attractive 2nd round player to justify getting rid of a stud.
That is key to me. We shouldn't trade Cooley "just" to get a pick. There needs to be a solid player in mind who we'd select with the pick(s) we received as compensation. Now, if we get a 1st rounder, we'd be sure to find someone we needed. However, if the compensation is something like a 2nd and a 3rd, i'd hope we would have preliminary talks with a few teams, but only execute the trade of the player we coveted was there when the pick came up. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
This is a buy low sell high thread. Should we consider trading Cooley, certainly if the offer is right, but a 2nd round pick for a consistent Pro Bowl, and good locker room presence(life coach in fact), is way too low. I would say a low first, or high 2nd, with a conditional 2nd/3rd rd pick the following year. Having said that, it really is kinda foolish to trade because of 4-6 good games by FD. He seems to be a baller, but one season isn't enough to get rid of a high caliber player.
Shockey and Gonzalez went for a second round picks and both are great TEs. Why wouldn't we trade Cooley for a second round pick? I highly doubt anyone would give up a first rounder for a TE. I think a second round pick would be fair.

Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
Why would the Redskins want to trade Cooley? He's a high character guy, one of the team leaders and a great player. I personally would trade Landry who is a great athlete, a free lance type player and is selfish. The question is would you trade a smart, team leader and complete player or a great athlete who is selfish and makes lots of bone headed decisions? You would probably get the same type pick for either one.

Trade Landry? Besides having next to no trade value, we don't have another safety on the team who has been playing just as good, if not better, than Landry has been. Thats why Landry hasn't been benched for some of his mistakes, while Carolos Rogers has. Landry, with all his flaws, is the best safety we have. If we traded Landry for a draft pick, we'd likely have to use that same pick to draft his replacement. Given the compensation we'd likely get for him (a 4th rounder at best), we'd be likely end up with a player not as talented as Landry. Additionally, Landry is signed to a rookie contract that will expire in a couple years. We have no long-term commitment to him. Cooley, on the other hand, has significant trade value. The consensus amongst us here is that he would garner anywhere between a 2nd and 5th rounder to a 1st and a 3rd. Cooley also plays at a position where we have two starting-caliber TEs and 1 solid backup on the roster. Typically, when smart teams have that kind of depth at a position like TE, and glaring weaknesses at other, more critical, spots on the roster, they trade one of the superflous players. Cooley also has a very large contract, one that will ultimately come back to bite the skins if they keep him around. By trading him in a potentially capless 2010, the skins rid themselves of that eventual issue. Fred Davis has proven that he is just as good, if not better, than Chris Cooley. He's younger. He's cheaper. And he seems to have developed a better chemistry with Campbell in 2 months than Cooley did in 4 years. As to Cooley being a "team leader," I think you overvalue him a bit there. We, as fans, like Cooley because he makes plays and he's funny. We're amused by the short shorts, crazy hair, his blog entries, and general antics... much the same way we were amused by Portis' alter-egos a couple of years ago. He's a "fan favorite." He's popular in the lockerroom. But don't confuse "popular" and "well-liked" with "Leader." If Cooley were really a "leader," he probably would have been voted a team captain for the offense at the beginning of the season. Instead, Campbell and Samuels were the captains for the offense. If the offense has a leader now, its Jason Campbell. As fans, we don't "identify" with him as much, because he seems to be a fairly private person. but if you pay attention when other players talk, Campbell's THE leader. Sellers is a leader. Fletcher is a leader. Cartwright is a leader... but not Cooley. Sorry. |
Re: Chris Cooley for a 1st and a 3rd -- would you do it?
your right, we love Cooley but he is no leader.

Shockey was not getting along in NY, and wanted out. Gonzalez is good, but also OLD. Again, if Cooley wanted out, or was causing problems, then yes a 2nd is fair, but he is young, an established probowler who has significant ties to the community and team, brings in a ton of merchandising revenue(yes that should affect the value we get for him, because he will bring that to the new team as well) and is a very good locker room presence. Shockey and Gonzalez didn't meet that criteria, and Gonzalez was franchised last year I believe - I could be wrong, but not this year. It is crazy to think a stand alone 2nd round pick is a fair market value for Cooley. |
