He obviously is not going to have a complete staff on 1/13 but this is where I got that date (see near the end):

--The Redskins interviewed Mike Waufle on Monday for their defensive line coach position, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Waufle is highly respected but was let go by the Giants last week as they shook up their defensive staff.-- JLC

I think this would be a great pickup, the Giants DLine has been one of the best in football, remember the Super Bowl?

Former Saints coach Jim Haslett has signed a three-year contract to become the Redskins’ defensive coordinator, according to league sources.

Haslett takes over for Greg Blache, who is expected to retire, and joins new coach Mike Shanahan’s staff. Haslett interviewed with Washington on Monday and had been scheduled to interview in New York for the Giants’ defensive coordinator job later this week.

Look for Haslett to invoke lots of 3-4 elements in this defense — Shanahan reportedly is intrigued by that scheme. Haslett could bring defensive line coach Tim Krumrie with him, but the Redskins also interviewed former Giants assistant Mike Waufle as a defensive line coach candidate Monday, at a time when Haslett also was interviewing. Longtime Shanahan associate Bob Slowik will be a part of the staff as well, sources said, likely coaching in the secondary in some capacity.

Sources said Rick Venturi is a strong candidate to be the Redskins’ linebackers coach, and the team also has asked for and been granted permission to interview Lou Spanos, who spent the last 15 years as an assistant linebackers coach with the Steelers, who run a 3-4 defense (Haslett ran a 3-4 when he coached in Pittsburgh as well).

Current secondary coach Jerry Gray, who interviewed for the Redskins’ defensive coordinator and head-coaching jobs but received neither, is a candidate to remain on staff. Redskins safeties coach Steve Jackson, who interviewed to remain on staff in some capacity Tuesday, also could stay.

Nice work with Twitter, Facebook, and the app

Rick Venturi is disappointing, would have preferred they stuck with Olivadotti

They need to drop Alex Gibbs from that list

BigHairedAristocrat 01-13-2010 10:27 AM

Re: Coaching Staff update

Venturi is a major head-scratcher - perhaps Olivadotti didn't want the job or they didnt feel he was qualified to coach 3-4 linebackers? It just said he was a candidate, so perhaps they're just doing due dilligence and interviewing a variety of guys - nothing wrong with that Spanos wouldn't be a bad choice, although i've always like olivadotti - there was a really nice piece on him at redskins.com a while back. he was someone that seemed like an eventual DC candidate.

I'm also confused as to how Slowick and Grey could both be on the staff, as they both coach the secondary. Maybe Slowick would just be a consultant of some sort?

If April removes ARE from Special Teams entirely (assuming he remains on the team at all) then he'll be worth every penny. Although I have to say Smith was the best coordinator - by far - that we've had on our team the past 2 years.

Everyone sounds down on Venturi, Maybe Spanos would be better, plus he's worked with Haslett before.

Yeah I don't know why he's still on their board.

Does anyone know of other OL coach's that know or teach zone blocking/cut blocking? Can someone provide a list of names? I just don't know of any other NFL coach's and I don't follow college ball to know of any up and commers.

I would love that. He was really becoming a name at BC. That was total crap the way they fired him. Wasn't it the Jets job that he interviewed for? And then they canned him for it. How dumb. Isn't that what institutions of higher education are all about? You know, advancing in life?

That is great news! No complaints from me there. Looks like we're going to the 3-4, though.
Chris Meidt is staying...good news for Campbell fans I think. Not sure what his job will be but he might be the QB coach
Thats pretty surprising, but no complaints here either. I'm not a "Campbell fan" my any means, but I don't like any of the "first round QBs" at all. Perhaps Shanahan isn't impressed with any of them either. Or maybe, he sees something in Campbell he can work with.

We have enough needs on our team as it is already, especially if we're switching to a 3-4. If we can scratch Starting QB off the list, we can be competitive much sooner.

EDIT - I was wrong, for some reason i thought he was the steelers old LB coach who'd left to do something in college, but, but he's still with the team. His bio says he's "quality control/defense" so this is definitely a promotion for him. He's been with the Steelers since 1996, and so he's been part of one of the best defenses in modern football. very solid pickup in my opinion.

Perhaps. Or perhaps we keep Campbell and draft a QB to take over by midseason anyway. Or perhaps this all sets up the return of Meidt's recommendation from last year...Chase Daniel!
