It's amazing how stories develop off a few mock drafts. I'm not buying the Clausen hype.

another clausen redskins story.
Not really, it's a redundant ESPN story...the Redskins will take a QB named (fill in the blank) this year. They don't look at the team's needs to veer from that story. They probably still think we're a team that buys old players for too much money too. I don't know why our team has so many stereotypes in the media...they don't even look at our team, they just have about 3 or 4 lines that they recycle and rotate for our team's headlines. |

LOl, agreed, He is just not a top ten pick. It would be a severe reach at #4...Colt in the second round would be a better value and I think he will be there. Im hoping either Bradford or Okung at this point. |

you hit the nail on the head. i couldnt agree with this analysis more. if Bradford isnt there at 4, take Okung. |

Even if Okung is not a fit for the system or blocking scheme Shanahan is trying to implement? |
Re: Jimmy Clausen has met with the Redskins
Okung with his athleticism shouldn't have a problem zone blocking in the NFL.

yes. hes top 5 talent, and the best player available at our position of greatest need. its not like we are out getting guys that fit into the ZBS anyway. |

Umm....my thinking has evolved about who is deemed to be a good value at which slot and who's not. Bottom line is you don't know until you know. I mean, Clausen at #1 might make sense for some teams. You know? If you like him, then you like him. I think whether he goes at #1 or #10 is completely overstated and irrelevant when the team is on the clock. If a GM believes that this guy can help you win, and this is your only shot to take him, then it doesn't 'mount to a hill of beans whether he drafts him at #1 or a #10 pick. It makes for good draft day discussion and fodder, but the game is ultimately won on the field. And I don't think there's a ton of space in terms of talent and potential between, say, the top ten picks in the NFL Draft. For all we know, C.J. Spiller could be the #1 pick for a team that places that kind of value on him. That said, I'm starting to lean towards Clausen over Bradford. Here's why; Clausen has proved, undeniably, that he's the toughest QB in this draft. I watched this guy limp (with that bum toe/foot injury) through at least three games and managed somehow to keep an average Notre Dame team competitive. Also, Bradford's shoulder injury scares the hell out of me. Those things never really heal and the hits he's about to take in the NFL will further take its toll over time. That's just my opinion, of course, but I'm interested to see how he responds to the speed of the game at this level. |

Re: Jimmy Clausen has met with the Redskins
I would prefer to stay away from Clausen altogether. We already have a QB on our roster with good physical tools but questionable leadership skills/intangibles. Why go down that road again?

I don't think it's Clausen's intangibles that anyone questions. He's definitely displayed leadership qualities over and over again. |
Re: Jimmy Clausen has met with the Redskins
So I guess there will be no Jay Cutler-esque secrecy this draft unless it's Bradford now that they've talked with Clausen and Colt McCoy.

You keep saying this, but it means nothing. You just want Clausen. Given Okung's talent, skill and athletic ability, I think he can learn to play any scheme. |

I wouldn't mind seeing Maryland's OT come here.

Yeah, I'd love to get Jared Gaither for a second as well. |
Re: Jimmy Clausen has met with the Redskins
I still haven't heard a definitive argument as to why Bradford is a clear cut #1 pick and Clausen isn't.
For the record, I don't love either of them. But if the 'Skins draft one, I'd rather have Clausen. |
Re: Jimmy Clausen has met with the Redskins
^ just for me, I'm worried about Clausen's ability to lead NFL players. They say he is a cocky jerk who does not inspire others to follow. I fear that rather than being able to rally the troops like a good QB should, others will tune him out because they are fatigued of his jerkiness. That is, he could become a Jay Schroeder. What do you say to this? Should I have this concern?
I'm not in love with others and would not mind too much if we drafted Clausen. But you asked, and that is my question. From what I understand about Bradford, I do not have the same concern about him. |

He was very aloof and he didn't even get along with guys on the offensive line. But hey, I don't know Jay Shroeder so take it with a grain of salt. But we can't have it both ways. People say Campbell is too soft, not vocal enough, and somehow infer that he's not a passionate and capable leader. And now Clausen is too cocky and incapable of leading players. Well we don't know that for sure, do we? I tend to be in the camp if you're winning leadership takes care of itself. I think there really is a fine line between being an asshole and being passionate. |

Physically, what Clausen does very well, Bradford does a little better. Neither is a huge red flag franchise killer type, like a Russell or Alex Smith. But there's also nothing special here. When people have to reference an "it" factor to make an argument in favor of one guy over the other, they're probably bs'ing. I believe the Clausen/Bradford debate is essentially meaningless, but like you, I believe it's more dangerous in the case of Bradford because with Clausen there's a wide spectrum of opinion, as one should expect. He's probably somewhere between what McShay/Mayock think of him, and what Kiper think of him. There should also be that wide spectrum with Bradford, but dangerously (I think), people are willing to overlook it. They're not willing to overlook it with Clausen, which means he's going to get drafted at value, while Bradford is almost destined to be overdrafted. Bradford is probably a lot closer to Clausen than anyone seems to expect. Which is fine if the Rams get him, because I don't care about the Rams. Hopefully, they add a receiver and he gets good. |
Re: Jimmy Clausen has met with the Redskins
I don't know, I caught a lot of Notre Dame games last year and more than anything Clausen's toughness impressed the hell out of me.
And we can't underestimate the fact that he played in a pro style offense under old Charlie. |

Re: Jimmy Clausen has met with the Redskins
Where I believe the fallacy is in this draft, is that Bradford and Clausen are comfortably the top two prospects at the quarterback position. This is simply not true. They are, perhaps, the easiest to identify, but to draw a conclusion as theres a big dropoff after them would imply the the QB class is complete crap on the level of the 2007 class. Which, it isn't. It's quite good.
Regardless of what you think of my Colt McCoy assessment, there's plenty of room to disagree on single prospects. On the macro level, it's safe to say that there are incorrect assumptions being made by NFL types, and that's for certain. |
Re: Jimmy Clausen has met with the Redskins
I know. You would think they are the only two quarterbacks in the draft listening to the pundits and internet chatter.
|
Re: Jimmy Clausen has met with the Redskins
Let the Seahawks have Clausen, hell let them take Bradford too! I really hope the Skins are just blowing smoke and are not going to use their first pick on a a QB.

I have always been of this mindset, I do really hope for an OT for our first pick, whether at #4 or after a trade down. If we do take a QB with our first pick, I will say it again, Bradford. Too much not to like about Clausen's personality. Just my :twocents:... |
Re: Jimmy Clausen has met with the Redskins
There's no question we can trade down and still get a quality offensive tackle in the first round.
I think ShanAllen (who said that?) are going to make one more big splash between now and draft day. |

Yeah, without Schroeder we had an offense which won the Bowl (yay Doug Williams). With Schroeder, the offense sputtered. And the only real difference was Schroeder. He had the physical tools, it was just that he did not inspire folks to bring their A-game. I don't know how much this thinking should or should not apply to Clausen. |

I think we all were at that particular moment, especially Jay Schroeder. Unfortunately for him his ego wore thin on the team fairly quick. |

Not a huge fan of Bucky Brooks' analysis, but he's well networked, and in particular, his mock didn't come off as someone who was just trying to make a name for themselves by throwing crap at a wall. There's some interesting happenings here. |
