Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
I agree. I'm still a sucker for big blockbuster signings -- but isn't this the same as the last 10 years? We're either spending too much or sending away draft picks for players..
And every year we've done this, everyone says "It's different this time." - Albert Haynesworth (2009) - nuff said. most ppl loved this. - Jason Taylor (2008) - last minute decision, most accepted this. he sucked. - Brandon Lloyd/Archuleta (2006) - Gibbs did it, most accepted it. they sucked. - Bruce Smith, Deion, Trotter, etc, etc, etc I'm a Redskins homer, so (again) I'll say that this is "different" and I'm hopeful (perhaps we're giving up lower draft picks for good "value"). But I think we all need to realize, this is the very similar to what we've been doing for years. If the moves work, then Shanahan's a genius. If not, we'll look back and shake our heads. When It Comes to Free Agency, Redskins Usually Aggressive
The past free agents we have signed has never really bothered me it what we gave up and gave them that was always my issue. Brandon Lloyd is the perfect example. He had one year left on his deal and we could have waited and signed him for about the same deal even if he had a good season. Bruce Smith while on the down side provided some play but his deal was too big for what he had left in the tank. These also don't look like such a bust if you don't give up the bus with each deal. |
Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
What's funny about this move is that I doubt Vinny would have been savvy enough to sign Brown without nearly giving away the farm.
This deal is good for us in that if the Redskins, and specifically Donovan McNabb performs well (I think it's combo of basically a Pro-Bowl year by McNabb and the Skins go something like 9-7), then the Saints and Eagles swap picks and are compensated accordingly. |
Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
We've been making some big moves this offseason but it just feels different b/c after so many years of Vinny bringing in vastly overrated talent for way too much (picks + money), we've made some really quality moves w/o coming close to betting the farm.
I mean Allen and Shanahan brought in a top 15 OT for a 3rd/4th round pick. That's got to look good compared to Vinny who was thinking of giving up 2 1st round picks for Ochocinco. |

Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
^^ Agree with every one 100% on this. We are getting good value for not alot of risk. The risk in drafting 1st 2nd and 3rd round guys is about 50% become players in the NFL. So far we have a Probowl Tackle and Probowl QB for a 2, 3, and 4.
Again if Vinny had made these moves we are looking at 2 1sts or 2nds and at leat 3,4. Much improved by our FO. Apparently this is how Bruce Allen works. He is very active in the couple of months leading up to training camp and as teams make camp cuts. This is how he does things. He takes a little risk on injury prone guys but doesn't give up the farm to get it done. This is all per Pat Kerwin on Moving the Chains on Sirius NFL radio today. WE ARE IN GOOD HANDS WITH BA AND MS!! SO AWESOME!! They also spoke about our tranistion into the 3-4 basically stating that we have a good roster to make the switch and we should be able to get it done quickly. Also made mention to the fact that it will look like a 4-3 alot. SO QUIT YOUR DAMN BITCHING AH AND GET TO REDSKINS PARK AND SEE HOW THIS THING WILL GET DONE. |
Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
a statement Brown made, from matt mosley's blog on espn... don't know if it has been posted yet, but i love his attitude. taking the anti-albert approach.
"I just think coming here, playing for Coach [Mike] Shanahan -- I watched him in Denver -- I like the scheme of offense that he runs. The zones, things like that," Brown told the Post on Saturday. "I'm gonna come in; they want me to play right tackle.I still think I'm a left tackle, but I'm going to do what they want me to do. I know they got my college teammate Trent [Williams] on the left side. We'll see how that all plays out. But I'm going to play wherever they want me to play. I'm just excited to be here and to be a part of a first-class program." hopefully we can move Capers back to tight end now!? |

awesome move for what we gave up for him pro bowl tackle for a 4th rd pick who is only 29 wow outstanding.......................

Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
I'm glad Brown is aboard, he's an improvement over anyone we currently have at the position. Contract will be the thing of interest going foreward, he's looking for a long term deal, remaining healthy will be the determining factor. His ability at his position is unquestioned.

Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
Love this move. As long as the coaches can get TW up to speed we'll now have a legit pair of tackles for the first time since Samuels and Jansen were both in their prime. I also love that Hicks can now shift inside to RG.

Suddenly, depth along the o/line is looking much better. Could now go from our weakest to our strongest save for good health. |

Look at the history, it is very unusual. In light of Stinchcomb, I don't think that being Drew Brees's RT on an almost undefeated team had anything to do with that. |
Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
Let's not forget that we're putting a rookie at LT.
|
Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
I am more appreciative of how Mr Allen has only commited to one year deals with alot of these positive additions. If they prove themselves and stay injury free, they could have great success with the Redskins orginization.

Well alot of that is probably due to the uncertainty surrounding the CBA, teams have to be in wait and see mode. |

If a Redskins tackle goes to the pro bowl this year, it will almost certainly be Trent Williams. Of course, it takes 2 to 3 years for popular opinion of a lineman's play to permeate throughout the league, so in other words, we're not sending a lineman to the pro bowl this year. |
Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
I admittedly didnt watch more than a handful of saints games but what is up with all this love for bushrod. he ranked right there in the bottom of O lineman with heyer and levi jones in terms of grading, winning at the poa, etc.
read that brown likes and thinks he will be a good fit for what shanny and kyle want to do blocking wise. any insight or opinions from anyone who knows jamall browns game and skills? |
Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
I didn't really focus on his play either. In looking at some stats he did give up 8 sacks.. 2 short of being tied for first.. maybe there's more than what the stats are showing, I'd have to go back and look but if someone else has analysis that'd be great
either way, not our problem :) I think that it had more to do with Brown apparently not being as positive in the locker room, one year left on contract, and coming off of injury.. made sense for them to unload him now |

Looking at a position upgrade year over year...this is possibly our best positional improvement of the offseason....even including Trent and Donovan.
Donovan is a much better leader...but marginally better statistically, Trent is a rookie and will struggle year 1. To think that we got the top draft OT and an probowl OT for a 1st and a 3rd (or 4th) is AWESOME. 2 starting OT's in the same offseason?...that is like hitting the JACKPOT ...I was willing to settle on Flozel Adams out of necessity. |
Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
Considering we lost two games alone by our field kicker and maybe another two or three from Zorn's horrible coaching, I think it's reasonable to think the Skins can go 10-6 this year.

Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
Yeah I think we could have a chance to contend for the division this year. We have done alot in the off season to improve this team drastically this fall.
As long as we stay healthy we have some weapons and some good talent here in ol dc again. |
Considering we lost two games alone by our field kicker and maybe another two or three from Zorn's horrible coaching, I think it's reasonable to think the Skins can go 10-6 this year.
We probably will win 9 or 10 games...if we've actually been able to purge all the poor players and coaches from our team.
Suisham was something like 21/24 on the season. If he goes 22/24, we do win the Saints game, but if Gano goes something like 17/25, maybe we lose two games like that and finish 6-10. Because of the situation around that awful kick (game is effectively over if a 19 yd kick goes through), I'm not going to argue that we'll lose more games, but we'll probably lose a few points over last year unless we can score more TDs. Getting rid of Zorn/Blache can't hurt on gamedays. I have no qualms of a Shanahan/Shanahan/Haslett power trio being outschemed by the coaches in our division, which is nice, but taking years off of the legs of Portis and Larry Johnson, and making Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly sound route runners who flash good hands is probably beyond the realm of coaching. On the other hand, getting Santana Moss to act like a professional football player and not a big-man-on-campus is probably easily teachable. |
Sure, why the heck not?
The schedule could end up being brutal this year. Nowhere near as easy as last year. Now I'm not saying that we can't make the playoffs, far from it. However we can't go around plugging this team into last years schedule. Colts are still an elite team. Green Bay, Minnesota, Dallas are still likely to be very good teams however each of them has the chance to fall off (Farve going back to bad habits, Rodgers staying healthy, The Dallas O-Line). New York and Tennessee are all very likely to rebound after medicore seasons last year. Houston, Jacksonville, Chicago, and Philly can go either way but at the very least they're all going to be tough to play. Detroit, St. Louis, and Tampa should all be easy wins, though if Stafford develops they'll be dangerous. Our last two games are against the Giants and Jaguars, two teams that will probably not be in a position to rest their starters. Compare this to last year. Oakland, St. Louis, Tampa, Kansas City, Detroit, and Week 17 San Diego should all have been easy games. That's 6 games last year compared to 3 this year. Then you had Carolina who was also struggling. The Giants were in a slump the second time we played them. So again, not impossible to make the playoffs but like I said before, you can't take this years team and plug it into last years schedule. The average level of opponents is much higher this time around. |

I think his move to the right side is what's really going to make this a plus move for us. He's a good run blocker, at least according to the Pro Football Focus numbers for 2007 and 2008. And though the Shanahan system is light on screens (especially compared to Zorn), his quickness on the right side gives us even more flexibility. |

Been saying the above forever. If we are intent on winning now, I dont see why we woldn't sign this guy. The price isn't too bad...........and I think we could squeeze this season and next out of him. Guys a beast and in very good shape. Getting to the probowl at his age???? He is a specimen. We should start a SIGN Kevin Mawae movement. Casey would be a good backup, but a starter??????? UGHHHHHHHHHHHH........... Lets go BA and MS >>>>>>>>SIGN MAWAE and WIN NOW!!!!! |
Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
Not sure what the fascination with Mawae is. Someone posted OL efficiency ratings a while ago and I think he rated out pretty poorly last year. We've already got an average center in Rabach. Mawae really isn't an upgrade at this point in his career.

Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
In order for us to be a contender in the playoffs, we need a #1 WR (Vincent Jackson or TO would fit that description), a solid, healthy NT, to back up and/or challenge Kemo, who Wants to be here, a Proven FS, a solid backup 3-4 MLB, and a back up corner (3rd or 4th corner) in case Barnes doesn't do well. Maybe we could thrown in a RB with speed who is young, and healthy.

I disagree...at this point, all we need is a legit #1 WR. However, I am not buying into the hype...this is not even a 500 team yet. Remember, we were 4-12 last year...but we were a BAD 4-12 team....look at the teams we beat and who we lost to...this team was HORRIBLE last year...we'd be lucky to get to 7 wins.... To my point with a legit #1 WR...if we had a stud...yeah...we could win another game/two max...otherwise, get used to a ton of TE's playing the slot with a ton of deep patterns to try to draw the secondary away from them. Regarding my way too early prediction of 7-9 at best...I will hold judgement until I see a few preseason games...I think last year I predicted 6-10...I was obviously wrong....but I was definately not drinking the Kool aid like many here are doing again. |

Problem areas from last year... QB, OL, RB have all been upgraded. The coaching staff needless to say has been tremendously upgraded, and the front office changes have brought an entirely new and positive atmosphere to the team. Too early for predictions but the 8-10 win range shouldn't be out of reach. |

With no legit WR's?, questionable LB's and coverage safeties? a new defensive scheme, untested kicker? rookie LT and an Oline that has never played together? a new QB, new Offense?...the only thing truly legit on our team are our TE's...and perhaps a solid QB...if he plays 16 games, which is unlikely. I'm kinda suprised Matty that you are already "sipping" the Kool aid before seeing a single play against competion in preseason. This squad is not equiped to compete with the top 12 teams in the league...not even close....next year after getting a top RB and WR....maybe. |

(By the way that phrase has to go, it's definitely played out). I'm honestly not as concerned about the defensive side of the ball as some seem to be. There is talent there and a scheme change is not going to be all that difficult. As for the WRs McNabb worked with a lot less for most of his career in Philly. And we'll undoubtedly see Cooley and Davis worked into the mix as both are talented enough to split out. And who knows, TO is still out there. All in all I just don't think that 8-8 is all that crazy. 10-6 if things really come together quickly. |
Re: Report: Redskins Have Traded for Jammal Brown
We have had the talent. I attribute alot of last year to coaching and the offensive line. We got those two areas fixed so 8-8 or 10-6 is definately in the realm of possibility.
As far as WR I think we will be fine for this year at the position. Let's see how DM improves the position just by being the leader of the offense. I really see our 2 TE as a huge asset and could see Fred Davis become Mike's next Shannon Sharpe. he has a very similiar skill set. |
