Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
After the Zorn fiasco, many of us were calling for a hard-ass Head Coach. We got one. Now, are we going to complain when he shows an underachiever the door?

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
Can't really argue w/ the decision. Shanny and Co clearly showed us they'll put the best player on the field. Thomas was a dud :(

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
Listening to Devin Thomas and Lavar on the Fan right now.
DT said he had problems catching balls consistenly in practice and "things like that." " " said he's really confused how got burried on the depth chart. " " said he came in with the right attitude from the get go. Said he bulked up and put on some upper body weight. Then the team wanted him to get his weight down, he was too bulky. Said he dropped the weight, stopped lifting as often, and did what he did. But said they still seemed unhappy with him. " " went to AZ and worked hard with McNabb; Said he came in in great shape. " " said he knows the scheme, has the mentality. His teammates always tell him they want him on the field. LaVar is asking is Shanny like that with everyone or does he feel singled out? DT dodging the question. |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
As far as him being a party boy, well, without going into details most of these guys party pretty hard. A few I've seen out the night before a game. I don't think it's any different here than it is around the rest of the league though.

lol gotta love it, right? Even Zorn wasn't comfortable with this guy. The thing that gets me is some actually seem surprised, or confused over all this. |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
Lock the thread already move on they cut him it is what it is. Focus on the players that are here IMO.
|
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
Shanahan said in his presser... DT just wasn't committed enough.
On a side note I don't think cutting DT had any effect on the team or the game. Hmmm, interesting. |
I was never much of a Shanahan fan, but after reading this article I'm beginning to like him. I love the fact that draft status means nothing to him and people like Lorenzo Alexander, Armstrong and Banks who made the team by working hard and having perseverance, are his kind of players. Shanahan is just like Gibbs.
I LOVE how the draft status means nothing to him, i wish that trait was universal amoung coaches and owners. But i dont like how it seems kind of like that Shanny cut DT because he didnt like his personal life, or they didnt really have a lot to talk about at the water cooler. |

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
Well, wish he had had the epiphany before he was cut:
Rich Campbell Devin Thomas: "I’m going to take that advice from Coach Shanahan about being more of a pro and I’m going to take it to Carolina with me." Thomas on his offseason side projects: "I’m going to eliminate all those other distractions that others might think are a bad thing for me." More Thomas: "I’m just going to focus on football and be a football player until my career is over with." (multiple tweets)6 minutes ago |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
Yeah. With our luck, he'll have a Cris Carter Moment and end up being an all-pro.

Shanahan saying he was cut because he wasn't professional enough in his approach to the game isn't an explanation. Clearly he hates NFL players who have been in Fantasia music videos, first he cut Larry Johnson and now Devin Thomas. The evidence is right in front of our eyes! |

Devin Thomas is now a Panther per Adam Schefter on twitter now he can play for a really bad team and possibly get some playing time lol

well lj had his shot and sucked asshole and was terrible all preseason but he was a "hard worker" and "looked good at practice". devin never had a shot at all with d mac at qb and who knows what could have happened he could have s the bed or he could have had a 100 yrd 5 catch game, my beef is we will never know cause shanny didn't like him. you can say all you want about hard work being a pro blah blah blah, if you can ball you call ball, and shanny basically said in his presser devin has the talent to be a good wr in the nfl but doesn't have the work ethic. guess what thats half the wr's in the nfl they r divas for the most part. sure you have your andre johnsons and your larry fitzgeralds, but you also have you t.o.'s your ocho cinco's, your plaxico's. only time will tell, i just can't beleive how many people were in love w devin and now all of a sudden he is garabge that can't make an nfl team. there is a reason he was signed 5 minutes after he cleared waivers. |

You're just going to have to accept the fact that Mike Shanahan demands more from his players besides just having the talent to play football. If DT goes on to have a great career with Carolina then so be it. Or if his problems catch up with him and John Fox doesn't like how he prepares for the games he might not last the season. I would've loved to see DT pan out here. But "iffy hands" is a quote I've heard about him often and when you combine that with his questionable work attitude that was enough to make him lose his spot. It wasn't like Shanny didn't give him a chance. He had several months to improve his standing on the team and didn't do it. And you're kidding yourself if you don't think that T.O. and OchoCinco don't put in the work to be dominant on the field. They may be blessed with extraordinary talent but they didn't get to where they are today by half assing it in the film room. |

Shanny on the other hand would rather let the less talented but harder working players play as their reward for being hard workers. Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
It could be that even though he practices hard, he does not pay enough attention to certain elements in his play. It's like when I practiced piano. Before I got a good teacher, all I did was just tried to learn the notes haphazardly. After I got a good teacher, I learn some little tricks to address "hiccups" and facilitate memorizing the music. It could be that Thomas just kept on not addressing the little things even after McCardell came along to coach him up.

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
I wanted DT to succeed. I did. But, I can point to any number of moments where he had the opportunity to become THE guy, and he hasn't. If he does in Carolina, then oh well. He won't be the first or last guy to get cut, only to go somewhere else and succeed. He has had 3 training camps in which we needed a receiver to step up. He didn't. We have had two coaching staffs, one of whom was desparate for him to step up. He didn't. He had 36 regular season games to come in and knock the socks off the coach, 40 catches and 445 yds later -- He didn't.
Did anyone look at that catch by Armstrong yesterday or last week, and say - Man, DT would have done that! I didn't. Did anyone see Galloway's comeback to start moving the chains and think - DT has done that. I didn't. I don't know why Roydell Williams is here, but the fact that DT didn't surpass him, to me says far more about him than about a HC who has made a living turning players into PLAYERS. I'll hold my tongue on MS' ego, but right now, we need players who want to play the game, and not athletes who want to play their games. Good luck DT, shame you couldn't be what we all thought you could be. |

Shanahan on releasing a skilled player: "This profession that we're in is not based on talent it's based on people working extremely hard." 10 minutes ago » Adam Schefter WR Devin Thomas claimed by the Panthers on waiversm 11 minutes ago
Kinda says it all right there. I mean what else does Shanahan have to say? Everyone is talented in the NFL, but what separates the good from the great is hard work. Thomas obviously wasn't working hard enough, according to Shanahan. |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
You guys complaining are really funny! Shanahan is exactly right in saying he'd rather have less talented guys who work hard on his team. The Redskins of the 80's were probably not the most talented team on the field, but they worked hard and we hail them as being the players of the glory years of this team.
Devin Thomas just didn't cut it. Learn to live with it and accept it. We have the coach we have desperately needed for years, even during the Gibbs II era (and it really pains me to say that!) So far, give me a team full of Anthony Armstrongs over a team of Devin Thomas' any day of the week. |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
Bottom line here is Shanny is continuing to run this team on a few principles and cutting a guy like DT reinforces some of them.
* You practice and play hard -- nobody is safe. * You buy into what we're doing here -- no prima donnas * I'm the boss, and my word is law etc. Not that I'm comparing the two guys, but does anyone think that an old school coach like Lombardi would have put up with Haynesworth pouting or DT loafing? I don't think so. Hell, Belichick just traded away Randy Moss, who is arguably one of the best ever to play at his position, and you have to believe there is some issue beyond salary and contract there. Shanahan's ego may yet cause him to overreach, but what he's doing right now (IMO) is continuing to build very clear rules for this team and to enforce them, no matter how painful they may appear. You don't think cutting DT and promoting AA sends a positive message and fires up the players? |
Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
To be clear, Shanahan never drafted DT, and he has no allegiance to him (like the previous staff, ie. Cerrato). Hopefully Shanahan will be able to draft guys he likes (ie. R.Torain) and develop & hold onto them going forward.
Shanahan is awfully consistent - he has been building HIS own team from day one. - dump Betts/ARE/Cartwright - dump Campbell - dump DT - bench AH after failing to trade him He's also seems to have an eye for talent so far: - Carriker, Lichtenstein (sp?) - Armstrong - Trent Willaims instead of Okung - Torain At 3-2 and 2-0 in our division, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. |

Re: Redskins release Devin Thomas
Wonder if that was real interest in DT or the Colts trying to get a slim advantage over us with picking up an ex disgruntled player?
