Re: 2011 NFL Draft
I'm watching College Football Live right now. They just sold me on wanting to draft Kellen Moore. He got the Boise State play book off the internet and had it memorized BEFORE he went to school there. They said he was teaching OLinemen where to go when he first got there. He is a film rat and his processing and ability to read defenses is faster than just about anyone. Sounds like a Peyton Manning-esque kind of player to me. I am going to be pulling for Shanny to draft him now. I am officially starting the Kellen Moore Mob. Whose with me?
I like Moore and I think you're pretty right on with your statements. Not sure if he's got an NFL arm though. |
Im gonna go ahead throw my support behind taking AJ Green WR with our first pick. I dont see a quarterback outside of Luck worth a first and Im doubting Luck is coming out. Oline pick is out of the question at our position. OT are weak and I wouldnt support taking an interior lineman with a top 15 pick. Not one first round RB talent either this year. Ingram? ha, not that good.
Green is the best WR in the draft and what i consider a threat everytime he touches the ball...wouldnt that be nice for a change? DaQuan Bowers would be my second choice, top on defense. But he is probably gonna go between 5-10...maybe higher. So with the Redskins first pick, AJ Green WR out of Georgia
Do you really want to go the WR route again? It's the most hit or miss position in the draft. Look at Calvin Johnson. Has he made Detroit any better? Nope. They're still a bottom feeder. Gotta get some linemen first. |
Re: 2011 NFL Draft
In the later rounds, I really hope we get a true homerun hitting type of RB. Someone like Noel Devine. A guy that can catch it out of the backfield and get 5-10 carries a game.

I think our biggest concern on the line is the interior line with both guard positions and a center. I think GTripp made a post in another thread about Shanny's draft history with linemen. With the exception of LT, all his interior linemen have been drafted in rounds 4-6 and only one was a bust. Sounds like we can have our cake and eat it too? However I do agree with you that if we take AJ Green we start down the Detroit path which is a place I do not care to go. |

Sure, if we want to take Jake Locker in the first round, we'll be able to nab him in the middle of the round. But that wouldn't be much of a pick. If Luck, Gabbert, and Foles all stay in college, I would avoid a top round QB in this draft just on the strength of the 2012 draft class. If the choices are to pick up Jake Locker and lose a bunch of games, or to lose a bunch of games with Chad Henne/Matt Leinart/Matt Moore/Carson Palmer at QB and possibly be in position to land Andrew Luck in 2012, lets take the latter route. If Gabbert and Luck both come out this year, next year's draft would appear to be very weak anyway, so then I'd support taking the best available QB in this draft and doing whatever it takes to make him successful. |

What so Tripp has done so much analysis on this site that now he gets credit for one of the few things I put together? For shame! SkinzWin? More like SkinzLoose! Anyway all kidding aside, that wasn't exactly the most comprehensive list. Basically what I was showing was a combination of the most successful and noteworthy lineman drafted by Shanahan during his time in Denver. In fact I thought I had left out a large amount of lineman drafted by Shanahan during his tenure in Denver only to find out that I had left out a measly 5 players. Two of which have gone on to have productive NFL careers. I've updated the list to include the 5 draft picks I left out
1995 Jamie Brown - Tackle - 4th Round (9 Career Starts, Former Redskin, Bust) 1996 Dan Neil - Guard - 3rd round - (104 Career Starts) Trey Teague - Center - 7th Round (94 Games Played, 80 Career Starts only 20 of which was with the Broncos) Chris Banks - Guard - 7th Round (Well at least he got a Super Bowl ring, 5 Career Starts) Matt Lepsis - Tackle - Undrafted (133 Starts at LT, 2005 SI All-Pro) 1999 Lennie Friedman - Guard - 2nd round last pick (Former Redskin) 2000 Cooper Carlisle - Guard - Round 4 - 2000 (2 Year Starter in Denver, Current Starter in Oakland) 2001 Ben Hamilton - Center/Guard - Round 4 (Former Bronco 110 Career Starts, Pushed out By McDaniels Regime) 2003 Ben Claxton - Center - 5th Round Picks (0 Career Starts but still in the league) 2004 George Foster - Tackle - Round 1 (Bust, Out of the League, Known for infamous cut block) 2005 Chris Meyers - Center/Guard - Round 6 (Current Texans Starter) 2006 Chris Kuper Guard - Round 5 - (Current Bronco's Starter) Greg Eslinger - Center - Round 6 (Current Free Agent) 2007 Ryan Harris -Tackle - Round 3 (Current Bronco's Starter) 2008 Kory Lichtensteiger - Guard - Round 4 (Current Redskins Starter) Ryan Clady - Tackle- Round 1 (One of the best tackles in the game)
So to sum up. Out of 15 lineman drafted from 95-08 very few amounted to nothing. 10 became starters under the elder Shanahan while 11 became starters on a Shanahan/Kubiack coached team. 5 out of 8 picked between rounds 4-6 became starters under Shanahan (6 if you expand to include Meyers starting in Houston). Only 4 were quickly in and out of the league. So with that said I guess theres a good chance that either Cook or Capers will make something of themselves, though it should be noted that some of the guys listed above rode the bench for as long as 4 years before getting a chance. |
Re: 2011 NFL Draft
I'm a big Kellan Moore fan too. He's either going to be the next Drew Brees or the next Ty Detmer. It's almost impossible to forecast which one he'll be more akin to.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft
If AJ Green drops to us we need to pick this guy up. Our defense at best next year will still be the middle of the pack, and we can't keep scoring 19.2 points a game if we expect to win more the 50% of our games. So we are going to need the weapons on offense.
Torain proved to be a solid RB this year averaging well over 4 yards a carry, and with more weapons like Moss, Green, Armstrong, Davis, Cooley... Even a journeyman like Grossman can look multiple times better then he is. Thats not including guys like Austin, or Banks who may step up on the WR end next year. I remember Moss being a return guy only, and transformed into a great WR. Same as Steve Smith, and Devin hester who have become solid/good ones as well. If Green doesn't fall to us then we need to go defense with Marcell Dareus. We need someone else on the Dline who can wreck havok, and help Orakpo and Fletcher make plays. Ryan Kerrigan is also a beast I would like to see playing for the Skins. Could you imagine Orakpe, Fletcher, Riley, Kerrigan as our LB's? If we are really going the Steeler defense route then it's all about the LB's, and that would be a great move in that direction I guess we will see what will happen, but I would rather have the great pieces in place for our next QB then putting a QB in now, and building around him. |

However, I'm not sold on us needing an OLB as our first overall pick. If Rob Jackson winds up panning out, which if his practice and first game are any indication we are in good shape, then we need to go with an ILB. We don't have a true big ILB that we need for the 3-4 scheme. Fletcher is doing well but is not going to be playing too much longer and Rocky just isn't cutting the mustard. |
Re: 2011 NFL Draft
So how do we feel about Ryan Mallet? I've seen a couple of highlight tapes and I'm awestruck by his ability. Especially the jump between this year and last year. To me he's like a hybrid of Joe Flacco and Big Ben. Unfortunately in interviews he doesn't seem to be all there and this is coming from a guy that frequently doesn't look like he's all there. Personally the interview part of the combine is probably going to hurt his stock which he'll probably balance out with a great performance in the drills or throwing at his pro day.

By the way one more thing this team needs is to use a mid round pick on a running back. I'm sure theres someone graded out in that 4-6 range that could be a healthier version of Torrain.

Agreed. I would say Shanny has an okay past in finding late round RB gems. |

Being a Maryland fan, I know I'm biased, but I really think a guy that could be had late that could turn into a beast is Da'Rel Scott. He reminds me a bit of a poor mans Clinton Portis when he was first drafted. Outstanding speed and quickness, not overly big (5'11" 200lbs) and has some shiftiness. He could probably be had in the late rounds or possibly even as a FA but I feel he'll probably get drafted in the 6-7th round area. |

I would like a RB pick in the mid round. I think someone already mentioned his name-Noel Devine. I think we need to add speed in the backfield and this guy has it. Great hands out of the backfield and this guy is elusive too. He is in the same mold as a Dexter McCluskter, but I think a better prospect. Devine is a big play talent...I think your looking 3rd-4th round pick at this point. |

I don't know about Mallet, but I love that kid Blackmon and his teammate Kendall at rb for Okie st. Both of those kids are ballers. Honestly I don't know if I like very many QB's that are coming out this year other than Luck, and it doesn't look like he will be there by the time we pick. |

I think AJ Green is very good. I dont think he is as talented as Calvin Johnson. But his hands are incredible and his run after the catch is really good. I think he is a playmaker and also a great redzone reciever. I dont see any O-Linemen at our pick...I see a really good DE at Clemson and 2 really good CBs who maybe availible. Overall I dont see great talent in the first half of the draft outside several players. |

Maybe not more impressive than Jamarcus Russell was in the same conference in 2006, but impressive. He looks the part with the build of a quarterback and displays more than acceptable accuracy. Far from a complete product, though. The danger with Mallett is that he lights up the Ohio State defense at the Sugar Bowl and gets badly overdrafted because of it. You don't want to be stuck with a quarterback who won't make a play with his legs, and not ready to give him the universe in terms of offensive talent to work with.
Really, Luck is less than of a complete product at this point than people want to believe. I'd still take him with the first pick though. A franchise COULD easily screw up Andrew Luck's development -- which would be a shame, but that franchise was just wasting time with that regime anyway. Luck should be a top five type superstar in the NFL. |
Re: 2011 NFL Draft
This is Peter King on Monday, essentially echoing what I've believed about Luck for a long time:
Carolina's not feeling Lucky this morning. I heard reliably earlier in the week that Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, the unquestioned top prospect in the draft should he choose to bypass his final two years of eligibility, was thinking about staying in school rather than being this year's Sam Bradford. As I said on NBC last night, Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh told me he thought Luck, a redshirt sophomore, was leaning toward staying for a fourth year. I said to Harbaugh Sunday that I'd heard the Luck family (his dad, Oliver Luck, is a former NFL quarterback) was concerned with the fact that drafted players, because of the prospect of a protracted work stoppage, might not even see their playbook or start practice 'til Labor Day -- or later. If that's the case, why wouldn't Luck stay for his fourth year at Stanford and play, whether Harbaugh (who is rumored to be a candidate for both pro and college head-coaching jobs after turning around the Cardinal) is there to coach him or not? "I don't think that's the correct logic,'' Harbaugh told me from his home in northern California. "But I do think it's more likely he'd come back. If I had to bet one way or the other, I'd bet he's coming back. He loves college. He loves the college life. He's such a good kid -- and so smart. He's got a 3.5 GPA in Architectural Engineering, and all along his plan has been to go to college for four years, get his degree, then figure out what to do with his life. This is a kid who has a plan. And he's a kid who's not the big-man-on-campus type. He just fits in.'' So it's not rock solid Luck stays. Stanford plays Virginia Tech in the Something Or Other Orange Bowl (who can keep straight all these sponsors?) next Monday, and maybe the kid figures he's done everything he could in college football and wants to move on. But it doesn't sound like it. That'd be terrible news for the Panthers, obviously. Carolina will be choosing first when the draft begins April 28. Carolinians will be even more disappointed if he stays after hearing Harbaugh's assessment of him. "I'm absolutely convinced he'll make it in the NFL,'' Harbaugh said. "He's got no negatives. He's athletic -- he'll run the 40 in the high 4.5s. He's instinctive. He's accurate. He's got great touch on the ball. He throws lasers when he wants to. I think he's got a photographic memory, though he doesn't think so. And he's the anti-celebrity quarterback. He'll be perfect for the NFL.'' So we'll see what Luck does. But it sounds like another underclassman, Clemson pass-rusher Da'Quan Bowers, might be moving into the first-pick-in-the-draft neighborhood if Luck stays at Stanford.
Read more: Vikings-Eagles postponed, Mike Singletary fired, more NFL*Week 16 - Peter King - SI.com But if Luck doesn't come out, it weakens the entire draft class considerably at the quarterback position. Now, don't get me wrong, we have to come out of the draft with SOMETHING at the position, just to avoid a situation like the one we are currently in. But something can be Christian Ponder in the second round, or it can be Scott Tolzien in the 5th. If you end up with a disaster season, maybe WE'RE the team that lands Andrew Luck. Or maybe you win and make the playoffs. For what it's worth, Luck's closest comparable from my college passer spreadsheet is...Aaron Rodgers. If he comes out right now. But there's also a litany of poorer prospects not far behind, which concerns me some. |
Re: 2011 NFL Draft
QB should not be the highest priority, but if we do get one we need to look at the kid for Missouri, as he can throw the ball pretty accurately and has a pretty quick release. Locker ran the ball very well and seems to have a good head on his shoulders, but he really can't pass all that great. Last season he threw a lot of errant picks. To me he is a lot like Snead, who also never really impressed me, but a lot of folks had a thing for him.

Gabbert would be a nice pickup regardless of when he comes out. There will be a lot of nice QBs in 2012 for us to nab. Some will be under the radar alo, just in case we have another season around .500. |
Re: 2011 NFL Draft
IF Dan Persa fully recovers from his Achilles tear and is injury free next season he might be a good pickup also, if we can't land Gabbert in 2011 or 2012. I know he runs the spread at Noorthwestern, but he was their entire offense just about, and he can run the ball. If he has a nice season with the newly aligned Big Ten, he might be worth a 2nd or 3rd round pickup.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft
If Luck doesn't come out, this is just a dreadful draft for offensive talent. Kiper's big board is AJ Green, and a whole lot of nothing until Ryan Mallett and Cam Newton.
Newton will likely still be there when we pick, but Mallett and Green almost certainly will be gone. Getting value on our pick might just force us to the defensive side of the ball, though trading down would appear to be the best option. |
Re: 2011 NFL Draft
We have the 32nd rank defense in the NFL..
This draft is smashed full of defensive talent. Why wouldn't we go defense? I'm confused... |

Last I heard, Blackmon's not coming out. Current buzz is we hope to trade down to still get a QB and someone who can complement Orakpo. Looking for another pass rusher. Defense, rightly so, feels predictable when Orakpo is out there. Coaches felt one reason they played well this weekend was because the Jags didn't know what to expect with Alexander, Wilson, and Jackson. |

That's surprising about Blackmon. I know AJ Green is amazing, but IMO Blackmon is more physical, and not too far behind talent wise. I think if you're going to be a sure-fire first round pick, you gotta go pro. You can always go get your degree once you've made your millions and taken care of your family. I like the idea of trading down, as long as we're still targeting a QB that we plan on making "the guy." We need more picks. I'm all about moving down in the 1st round if it nets us another 1st or 2nd rounder. Good points about Rak. If we're all in on this switch to a 3-4, we need a lot of new personnel. |

That would be the bomb Matty if we could get a Suh type of guy to help out Orakpo. Luck and Green are gone for sure, and probably the QB from Missouri. Tony Shaw has bumped him up to the second best QB in the draft as of last night. That could change if Newton shoots some duck next week. I think if the Mizzou QB stays in we can get him next season or get a potential steal in the 2nd or 3rd round in a guy like Persa(if healthy), or some similar QB talent that is solid. |
