I certainly do not think Locker plays on a different level of mental and physical duress than Gabbert. That would draw a distinction where one does not exist. But he's been battling since 2007, which should not be overlooked.
This is one area we disagree.
I think Locker has clearly played under far more duress especially physically then Gabbert.

As they say in boxing everyone has a gameplan until they get punched in the face and we've seen Locker get punched in the face and respond.

Will Gabbert?

Maybe they're under equal scrunity and mental pressure but I still say Locker was more under the microscope then Gabbert who is still basically flying under the radar.
I think you're right that we know what we're getting in Locker (character-wise). Ultimately, that's the knockout punch against him as a prospect (ability-wise), but it's still valuable to know that you're getting a good kid that has been through the worst of it in college and can handle the worst of what the NFL throws at him.
You love your presuppostions.
But anyway, if you can't see Locker's ability on film then you won't see it.
But, as much as character shines through the physical skills that make him one of top prospects also shine through after all his character doesn't make clucth plays to win games his arm and legs do.
You get a prospect that can carry a team with 0-12 talent to 7-5 record/bowl game victory on the strength of both his mental and physical skillset.

Ultimately because of the lack of talent around him and his relative newness in his scheme (basiclly a sophmore in Sarks offense) you get a prospect who's best is yet to come.
But we also should be more certain that he can do it because Gabbert at his "worst" helped to build a 2010 season where Missou was in the Nat'l title picture for 2/3 of the regular season before taking a loss to OU, where as Locker at his best took a less than able team to roughly .500, and did most damage through individual key big plays against weaker competition whereas Gabbert was more consistent down to down and accomplished what he did not through highlights but through staying ahead of the opponent on first, second, and third down, the traits that will make him successful in the NFL.
Why would this year be an example of Gabbert's worst but Locker's best?

When did Washington face weaker competition?

Again I think you fall into the trap of mistaking the team for the prospect.

You know I don't go by stats but lets look at their stats in relation to the quality of the their teams:

I think you would agree that Gabbert has the better team?

Gabbert: QB Rating:127--63.6 comp %---16 TD---9 Ints----23 sacks
Locker: QB Rating: 124--55.4 comp%----17 TD---9 Ints----19 sacks

Yet their production doesn't show the disparity you imply in their consistency or 'staying ahead of the opponent on first, second, and third down'.
Especially when Gabbert plays in a spread offense designed to increase efficiency and consistency.

Now, lets say you put Gabbert on Washington and have him take the pounding that Locker received and give Locker the bump in talent that Mizzou would provide in its wide open spread attack.

Do you think the resulting production numbers would be the same as the above?

Also, you didn't address their physical skillsets.

I think and hope we pick a 3-4 linebacker or DE. With a NT in the 2nd round if the right player is there.

If we are going to stick with the 3-4, I think we need to start adding the right pieces b/c we have so few in the front 7 that currently fit imo.

This is going to be a strange year. Usually, I get a feeling about 1 or 2 guys tops. I have no clue where we're going this time around.

If someone held a gun to my head on this one, I'd say Locker, but very little would surprise me.

I agree with Smoot that we probably are trading out of the #41 pick unless there is a guy there the FO absolutely loves.

BTW- Locker at #10!

Yeah I don't see JJ being the guy, how many times did Mike draft WRs in the first round? I can't remember even 1

I can. Ashley Lelie in 2002. Now 31 years old and retired. Interesting note though, we traded for him...or with him. He was part of the 3 way Ducket deal.

Just to save face I'm going to reinforce my Locker pick. Though the circumstances surrounding such an acquisition still remain clouded to me.

This is the real power move here SS. If possible this IMO is the way the Redskins should go.

Certainly a strong option.

As I said yesterday, I don't believe they will trade up for Gabbert. And I think plans to move up for say Locker will fade away at the last minute.

They may very well just stay at 10 and take Quinn (or Jordan or Watt)

I wonder also, if they may move a 2012 early pick for a later 1st rounder in 2011?

Should be fun tomorrow

My gut tells me to stick with what I've been saying all along Robert Quinn, and then a possible trade up for someone like Ponder or wait for someone like McElroy..but I just don't know

That 2012 move is a possibility I would asume if a deal could be consumated where we could get that additional 1st rounder this year. I'm always hoping the following years draft will go undisturbed. We need bodies this year, as many as possible in the first three rounds.

I like McElroy but not enough to bank on him as our QB of the future.

30gut 04-27-2011 06:48 PM

Re: Your final prediction for #10

McElroy is the QB prospect I think has the least potential to become a quality starting QB.

But, I think Ricky Stanzi and Tyrod Taylor are both very underrated developmental prospects that could develop into starters ala Brian Greise except we don't have a 3rd round pick.

I would rather trade up for Stanzi or Tyrod then trade up for Blaine Gabbert or Jake Locker and Locker is one of my favorite prospects in this draft.

I just don't believe trading up is the right move for a team that has as many needs as we do.

Trading up is something teams that are a player away can afford to do.

Re: Your final prediction for #10

I wouldn't be mad at all if we moved up to take Gabbert or took JL at 10. I think it was matty who basically said earlier that this team will go only as far as a QB will take us in today's league. I agree and I do hope we take a QB w our 1st round pick

Swarley 04-27-2011 07:03 PM

Re: Your final prediction for #10

If we're gonna go with a late round QB I want either Tyrod Taylor or my personal favorite Pat Devlin! I'd also be fine with Stanzi.

With the 10th pick, Mark Ingram. Its a shocker on draft day.

tryfuhl 04-28-2011 02:54 AM

Re: Your final prediction for #10

I definitely don't see us taking Ingram at 10.. and for no particular reason I hope that we don't take Quinn, don't ask me to explain because I really can't, just for some reason I don't think he'll work out for us. If we get him I'm all for him making it though.

Mayock's latest draft has us taking... Prince Amukamara

While I have been a consistent proponent of the idea of trading down to acquire more picks simply because we have so many need areas, I would have no problem with drafting Jones, his size, speed and strength is intriguing.

My guess is that it's going to be Locker and I'm pretty much fine with that. As much as I'd like to move back, I don't think it's wise to move back behind the Vikes if Locker is your guy, so I say, stay at 10 and reach a little if you really think he's going to be a franchise QB.

So, latest is, if things go as hoped for the Redskins...Lotus will get exactly what he's been hoping for.

So, that would be Jordan and Ponder

Though personally I'm not ready to shut the door on Quinn

But again, latest rumor Jordan and Ponder. I suspect a trade up for Ponder would be necessary

How the hell did we get from Dalton, Locker & Gabbert back to Ponder? I have not read a Ponder link to the skins in weeks. I can't wait until tonight so this is over...

Ponder may be the compromise...but loyal readers of the WP know that it was mentioned here back in January that we spent a lot of time evaluating Ponder this past fall

http://www.thewarpath.net/774937-post7.html

Yea i remember that stuff but it just seemed like lately it was quiet on him now all of a sudden on draft day his name comes up again. Getting ponder would not upset me but personally I would rather get Locker or Gabbert in the 1st round.

SmootSmack 04-28-2011 10:31 AM

Re: Your final prediction for #10

Well, like I said, I believe it may be a compromise pick "I love Dalton" "But I love Locker" "Well, we both kind of like Ponder"

If Locker is there at 10, I hope we take him (even over guys who could help us sooner and potentially safer picks in guys like Jordan, Watt, or Quinn).

I think Ponder is going to be a really solid QB, but in Locker we could have a star

I'm still cool on Sunshine..but if we get him "Greatest QB Ever!!!"

probably their reference to the "puff puff pass" because you would have to be high to select ponder at 10.
