Interesting pun. That's the problem, he's not so big himself. He's 5'11". We'd be trading SantanA for SantonIO. Not to mention he carries more baggage than Santana -- Holmes has his substance abuse problems. |
Re: 2011 Redskins Free Agent Rumors and Reports Thread
I really hope the front office (shanny) make resigning Moss a priority vs. signing Holmes. This would be the exact moves this franchise has made over the last 11 years. Letting your core guys leave to bring in a FA. We have to rid ourselves of these moves. We have young receivers and we need to develop them. Same as RB's, no need in bringing in a veteran. LB's, we have some young talent there. Lichensleiger (SP), Montgomery, seem to be ready to step up and play center. Let them compete for the job, Raymer has been good, but he may serve as a better back up at this point. We really need to develop our young talent.

All indications seem to point to that. |

So far the SKINS FO hide their moves well. The players we are going to bring in probably haven't even been talked about anywhere yet IMO.

Very good point. Which is why I don't get why people get up in arms about any rumors about possible FAs, etc., etc. |

I'm really torn on this one.. On one hand Moss is one of my favorite players of recent Redskins teams and I'd hate to see him leave.. However he has some infuriating drops, is 32 and has battled leg injuries (although he's toughed them out) in recent years. On the other hand, while Holmes seems to signal "same old Redskins" he's 26, a SB champ, proven clutch performer, great hands/speed combination and a top 15 WR in the league. If it wasn't for his off the field issues he would be as coveted of a FA receiver there ever has been on the open market. If we made this move, everyone would be up in arms but I think this would turn out differently than previous FA forays.. How about both? Holmes, Hankerson, Moss, Armstrong, Kelly/Paul, Banks/Robinson? I wouldn't hate that. |

I think Moss's career numbers are better than Holmes. of course he's a little longer in the tooth. |

Holmes, Hankerson, Moss, Armstrong, Kelly/Paul, Banks/Robinson? I wouldn't hate that.
Between Moss and Holmes it's easy: you sign Holmes. Doesn't matter that you're going to have to pay more, in free agency, its all about getting the most aggregate production out of the roster spot. Easiest FA mistake to make that results in deadcap is having the player that you can't find a role for, not having a player who is overpaid. With that said, I agree with all parties who have suggested that a failed Santonio Holmes signing would be essentially committing the exact same error that made the franchise what it is today once again. They'd be taking a player who, in the last three seasons, has struggled twice with one career year, and a number of late game heroics that profile as garbage time TDs with the Redskins. So that can't be comforting. But Holmes IS one of the best players on the market and he's not too old to justify his salary, and that goes far for NFL front offices, evaluation mistakes be damned. |

If it has to be one of them, give me Holmes. Younger and more productive. |

Saw this wanted to know what you think.
Rubin would be perfect but why would the Browns trade him? He can easily play 4-3 DT.
But Holmes IS one of the best players on the market and he's not too old to justify his salary, and that goes far for NFL front offices, evaluation mistakes be damned.
I agree. I'm one of Tana's biggest fans and I think we should re-sign him. But, business is business. I think Holmes is the better player and if we had a choice between Holmes and Tana I would take Holmes. He's younger and I think he would be more productive then Tana as the focal point of our passing game. |
Re: 2011 Redskins Free Agent Rumors and Reports Thread
Give me Moss over Holmes.
Holmes is, if I recall correctly, one strike away from a very lengthy suspension. Plus, the point of drafting guys like Hankerson, Austin, even Kelly is to have those guys emerge as the leading WRs of the future. And that's not even mentioning Armstrong. I'd prefer we invest elsewhere |

Re: 2011 Redskins Free Agent Rumors and Reports Thread
Rubin would be perfect but why would the Browns trade him?
He can easily play 4-3 DT.
Not always true. A lot of NT position players couldn't switch to the difference assignments of the 3 or 5 technique in a 4-3 scheme. A NT just eats space and takes on blockers. 4-3 DT would have a lot more responsibilities. Basically think of Haynesworth. Well, Haynesworth is because he is worthless and lazy, some probably just don't have the skill set for it. If this guy can do shuttle runs without having to stop and take a crap in between, I say trade for the guy sight unseen otherwise... |
Re: 2011 Redskins Free Agent Rumors and Reports Thread
i dont think the jets are letting holmes go, so i think picking between him or moss is kinda moot, BUT stranger things have happened...

And the role of a 1-tech is easy for a player used to playing 0-tech in a 3-4.
Basically think of Haynesworth. You're making the reverse assumption Rubin would be going from a 0-tech in a 3-4 to a 1-tech in a 4-3. Al was going from a freelancing all around beast to a gap control space eating 2-gap read and react NT/DE. Al could have played that role, but I actually agree with him that it was a waste of his talent. You don't see the Packers playing Cullen Jenkins as a NT or a 2-gap DE. Find an example of a 3-4 NT that couldn't play in a 4-3. |

It's funny how we say that even in this compacted off season. These rumors are getting more hot and heavy every day it seems like... Next Hogs Haven will just type the same standard format article and insert every QB in the league into the title, with a new article coming out at the top of each hour. |

Grossman did solid but Go Beck or Orton
|
Re: 2011 Redskins Free Agent Rumors and Reports Thread
Slightly OT but I didn't want to start a new thread on the topic. Does anyone feel like Kurt Warner is a little biased against any and all QB's? I don't know why but I feel like he's ultra critical of anyone that isn't an UDFA fighting for their very life.
Like one second he was talking about how Cam Newton needed to learn how to work hard and be dedicated to learn the playbook, then after Florio said there were reports of Newton working with Weinke for 12 hours a day Warner started talking about working smart. Maybe I'm overanalyzing but for some reason I don't like Kurt Warner the analyst. |

Funny, I'd almost wager he'd prefer Vince Young over Grossman. lol. I just wish people would take a closer look and realize Grossman knows the system better then anyone we had last year and actually I think someone pointed out that he was able to get the ball in the endzone... finish the drives. No matter who we bring in they will be in the same boat as McNabb was last year, basically a QB brought in who does not know all the plays or scheme well enough to be very effective. But lets bring in anyone else except Grossman. Yeah, Young is such an upgrade over Grossman. Atleast Grossman has better character and doesn't throw temper tantrums. |
