and I could clearly see the hurricane as it was approaching NC. It was HUGE. Amazing view.
So, lets cut out all of California, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, South Carolina, North Carolina...hell, all of the east coast. The midwest (tornadoes). I think that leaves North Dakota as a viable option. Some people are truly idiots. |
That looks really bad Mattyk. Vermont got owned too. It's funny, people here are talking about how the hurricane is overhyped because it wasn't that bad locally. They fail to realize dozens of people died, over 7B in damages and 5M power outages.
My aunt and uncle live in southern Vermont. Their little town got pounded. A bridge collapsed, basically everyone is without power, several houses crushed by large trees... Fortunately they are ok, but not everyone in their town can say the same. |

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
Got powered back sometime this afternoon, not sure what time.
Hey, question for you guys. Like how long would you say raw meat in the fridge would be good for. I had a couple of steaks I was going to cook and it still looks and smells fresh, though there is some discoloration just along the edges, but not mold or anything like that. |

I would say that if they smell fresh, they are probably good. If you are a bit concerned, you can probably use a sharp knive and slice the discoloration. NOTE: Some places say 4 hours...although a lot of times I leave meat to defrost, but I guess this may be different. |

In the meantime I think they said 4hours for stuff that was in the fridge and up to 48hours for stuff in a full freezer or 24hours if the freezer was half full. |
Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
Yeah, if that's the case I would have to throw out everything, we've been down for nearly 48 hrs.

I was thinking of doing that, but I didn't want to "cheat" you know. I think I'm going to go for it. Hell, I used to eat the shit they served in the Navy all the time and I'm still alive. |

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
Confirmed w/wife (she is certified by VB Health Dept for Food Svc Mgmt for our old restaurant). If the steaks were in the fridge, and the fridge not opened (or only just a couple times), steaks should be cooked tonight and will be OK. If not cooked tonight, throw them out. Would not trust chicken after 48 hrs.

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
I took a case of water and places the bottles around the freezer so if the power did go out the frozen water bottles would help keep the food longer and you can drink them as they thaw out.

Yeah really sucks. Im lucky in that my girlfriend has power so i can just stay there. Do you have a electric or gas water heater? I had to throw some food away last night, but i had a turkey that i was able to save, which i have plans to cook tomorrow if anyone has any good tips. The tree that is suspended by power lines and that i have to drive under to get out of my neighborhood is still hanging there. Its angled so thats its blocking one lane completely and making it so some taller cars, like suvs and trucks, could hit it when they drive under it. This is a pretty major road too, connecting 2 areas together with neighborhoods and apartments on both sides. Combine that with no street lights at night make for a pretty dangerous situation. I really would have thought getting it taken down would have been a day 1 priority. Its big enough that if it fell on your car while driving you could be killed. Plus it could easily take out a whole new set of powerlines. |

no generator, i can borrower someone today, but hopefully will be back on. We've seen satallite images...its in an area currently submerged in water. its there though...the deck appears to be detached and angled away. Cant tell the water depth but appears to be a couple feet as of 2 days ago. Expecting flood damage. The enterance to Rodanthe has a river between the sound and the ocean so they're cut off. You can tell alot of house sound side are gone and several empty lots along the ocean. Sand dune that pads the ocean and HWY 12 and houses is obviously gone everywhere. National Guard has been helicoptering supplies in. Heard National Guard is not letting anyone onto Hatteras Island for at least a month while they get the Highway 12 up and ready. |

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
we didnt lose power, which was a nice surprise but im alil disappointed as we were ready with ice, cooler, flashlights, lantern, candles, all electronics power charged. did see a huge tree limb fall in the middle of the street. about the size of a decent size tree. about a half hour later a guy in his truck came down the road attempted to run over it at one end (where the limb had split off), backed up and smartly decided to drive over the tail end of the branches.
had my storm drain cloggin out back so when we got home around 5 pm, there was about a foot of water with the rain coming down hard. took off the cover and tried to unclog it with a clothes hanger but that didnt work. i was desperate so i stuck my hand down there which just barely fit, acting like a lil girl i thought i felt something bite me and yanked my hand out and had cuts all over. i manned up and spent the next 30 mins slowly pulling small handfuls of dirts n peddles out but it was still clogged. so for the next 12 hours i had to go down there with a bucket and clear the water out. sucked when it got to around 2 am as i was tired and had to set my alarm every hour. luckily only about 2 sq ft of drywall got warped. sat morning before the storm i went to home depot and there were a ton of people buying generators. i walked back to my car without any D batterries and this lady had this huge generator on a heavy duty cart. i asked if she needed help and she gave a reluctant yes as if she was scared or something. she went to go put down the seats leaving her wallet right on top of the generator box at the end of her suv where i was standing. i stepped back as i didnt want her to get more scared. i asked her how much she paid, took her a few seconds and she said very quietly $900. so we got the generator in the back of her suv and she didnt even say thank you. i get it, i was rednecked out that morning and had whiskey breath and shot eyes from the night before but dang lady . . . atleast say thank you. anyways, just waiting and watching my hand to see if it turns green and i get some type of hepatitis from cutting up my hand in an outside city storm drain. |
