Isn't Beck under contract for a few milllion? Why in the world are they keeping him on the roster? At this point he's totally useless.
I think they are keeping him around to allow Jonathan Crompton to compete against him in training camp. If the Redskins decide to keep three quarterbacks like they did in 2010, it would make for better evaluation. If Beck beats Crompton in the preseason, then the quarterback depth chart will look like: 1. Robert Griffin III 2. Rex Grossman 3. John Beck Or if Crompton proves himself worthy and lands 3rd string, the depth chart will look like: 1. Robert Griffin III 2. Rex Grossman 3. Jonathan Crompton Crompton was limited to the practice squad all last season. He was signed to the active roster when the Redskins season was over. As far as Beck is concerned, he's hasn't been released yet because Mike Shanahan still likes him for some reason. |
Re: O-Line Edition: Free Agency and the Draft
I think Bell signs here.
|
Re: O-Line Edition: Free Agency and the Draft
At this point, after thinking about RG3 or Luck in burgundy in gold - I'd rather have Kyle Shanahan as the third string QB than see Beck out there again... Let's save the cap room to get Bell.

Jamaal Brown, according to Mike Shahanan, has to prove that he can stay healthy. He's making entirely too much money to be a back up. Unless Brown restructures his contract to that of a random back up, expect him to be either released or perhaps traded. He's either a starter or he's on the waive wire. |

As long as bell can stay healthy.

Sounds right to me. Yet it's also perplexing...I can't really think of a time when Brown looked like a bona fide starting RT during his time in DC? |

The Skins will get no cap relief from releasing Brown and no one is going to take a chance on him, so the team will just need to bite the bullet and keep him. |

Re: O-Line Edition: Free Agency and the Draft
Uh oh........Bell's price just got higher
Free-agent tackle Demetrius Bell is scheduled to arrive in Philadelphia on Saturday night to visit the Eagles and will spend the night in town, a league source told the Philadelphia Inquirer. Bell visited with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Bell's visit was the Steelers' first with a free agent this offseason. |
Re: O-Line Edition: Free Agency and the Draft
After the Redskins draft RG3 or Luck with the first pick, Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan would be wise to turn their focus to the right side of the offensive line. They should draft a RT in the 3rd round.

With the 69th pick the Redskins select Bobbie Massey RT Ole Miss. If not him Schwartz will be the one.
Count on it. NFL Videos: 2012 combine workout: Bobby Massie |

He was considered a top 15 pick 2 years ago. He isn't a LT like people had viewed before, but he is a guard/ Right Tackle at the least and a very good capable starter at that. |
Re: O-Line Edition: Free Agency and the Draft
People keep talking about this Swartz kid from Cal. What about Willie Smith, a decent OT that we already have? The only thing about him is he hasn't played on the right side.

Depth. Willie is a defensive end turned OT. Could be great. Drafting a RT who has played that position and ready to play the position is glaring need. If he is good enough to start at that position then he should be drafted. Redskins have no depth on the OL and it's time all that changed. Two offensive lineman in rounds 3 and 4 and a safety in round 4 not necessarily in that order and we will have done good. |

You cannot expect undrafted free agents to be ready to take over RT position in their second year. That's exactly how not to assimilate RG3 to the NFL. The reason he went undrafted is because he is a major project who needs alot of coaching, practice, etc before he can be depended on. Yes he did all right last year and got great experience but Massie and "the Swartz"(may the Schwartz be with you) are both still better players at even this point and have higher upsides to be full time starters in this league. |
Re: O-Line Edition: Free Agency and the Draft
I am not sure why Jamal Brown gets bashed so much. He is a good RT, when healthy. I he can recover from the hip surgery, he still can have two or three years playing at a high level. I think we have more depth on the Oline, than we have had in ten years. Our back ups are Tyler Polumbus(26), Willie Smith(24), and Maurice Hurt(24). All young and still improving. The only time the Oline could not protect the QB was when Eric Cook was in at center(I cant stand him). Brown had no off season therapy last year and is now two years removed from the surgery. I would be happy with them picking a RT, but I don't think it is an emergency. If we had not got screwed with the cap situation we would have signed someone like Eric Winston. That would have been a luxury, it not a necessity. I would rather them pick a linebacker like Mykal Kendricks in third.

That's primarily the problem right there. I'd love to see what he can do at 100%. Shanahan recently said that JB has been working on his flexibility this offseason by taking yoga and that's helped in breaking up scar tissue. Let's hope that helps him. |

The problem is Brown hasn't been healthy in two years. I mean you can only give a guy so much time to get healthy. As far as Willie Smith goes, he was an UDFA last year. Occasionally picking up UDFA's work out, but more often than not they are stashed and given time to grow, meaning multiple seasons on the bench, before they are ready to start on a full time basis. Smith showed flashes last year but I would stash him some more and then give him a look in a couple more years. He's good enough to be a backup swing tackle right now though. |

Re: O-Line Edition: Free Agency and the Draft
He's also changed the spelling of his name to DeMetress...and when Orakpo has him lying flat on his back, we can call him Da Mattress...ba zing!
Anyhow, 5 year deal is about 4 years more than most people though he'd get. So it will be interesting the details |
Re: O-Line Edition: Free Agency and the Draft
From Matt Williamson's NFL Chat:
NR (Columbia, MD) What are some options at right tackle for the Redskins now that Bell is not available? I don't like going into the season with Jammal Brown as the only option, given the questions on his health. Matt Williamson (12:05 PM) Yeah, I don't blame you at all. Good observation. Maybe M McNeal or Pashos. It's not like the Skins have draft picks to get a lot of impact in the draft. |
Re: O-Line Edition: Free Agency and the Draft
I know it maybe be difficult to hear this, but Trent Williams is going to return as LT.

Also, a lot of people will be disappointed to hear that. We were all counting on Trent Williams to not return as LT, so we could continue our master evil plan to destroy our beloved Redskins. |

Ah ok. Yeah I have no idea why Trent wouldn't return as starting LT. He served his time so he's good as far as I'm concerned (as long as he stays away from the weed.) I'm glad he got his 4 game suspension out of the way last year though, because I'd hate to see him miss the first 4 games this year while RG3 is hopefully in the lineup. |

Okay that explains your comment. Unless something drastically changes, I think TW will be back at LT. Hopefully he won't do anything stupid to get him suspended for a year. |

The fact of the matter is the Redskins gave the Saints a 3rd rounder for Brown. He has not stayed healthy for a full season since joining the Redskins. If Brown can't stay healthy, then we have to plug in someone else. Polumbus and Willie Smith have impressed. If the Redskins do draft a RT, and I believe we will, then that's more youth in the line-up. Brown is 31 years old and has been proven to not be able to stay healthy. Hell, we should have kept that 3rd round pick from 2010. |
