Cooley in Oaktown...yeah I see it. He's gonna play with a mean streak and that team is one place you can buy into it all the way. |
Cooley lasted a bit longer (couple weeks) than I thought he would
Me too. In the end I just dont think the coaches believed he could stay healthy and decided to give him a chance to catch on with another team. Health was the main reason, not money. |

I'm worried about them getting suspended. Based on their own comments on the matter, it seems that neither of them has made any drastic lifestyle changes. If they haven't, that's a problem. They're both just one weak moment at a party or giving in just once to a pushy friend away from a one year suspension. Also, aren't they required by the NFL to refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages, as well? That's not easy to do at a party or a nightclub. If those two get suspended again (especially TW), it could cost the Skins a couple of games and cost MS his job. The last thing I want to see is for DS to fire MS and change the HC and the system once again. I think that would really set us back. |
Re: Chris Cooley Released
I was watching Mike Shanahan speak about Cooley this morning (it was from last evening's Redskins Nation) and it really sounded like Cooley refused to be a backup and asked to be released. They never discussed his contract from other reports.
It doesn't harm my view of Cooley as a true Redskin, it just shows how competitive he is and how hard it is for players to accept the end of their career. It basically went like this: Cooley: "Coach, I want to be a starter." Shanahan (verbatim): "Chris, Fred is going to be our starter." Cooley: "I want to start somewhere in the NFL." Shanahan: "Then we're try to help you with that." |

I've seen him speak about it and really seems mature now and realizes he screwed up. Fred, he worries me some. He seemed to be more of a partier anyway. |
Imagine how much worse you would feel if we actually won something with CP and Cooley, as we did with Art Monk and Darrell Green. Monk and Green were also great Redskins and good good people like Cooley. Add winning multiple Championships and the loss of them hurts even more.
So now you know how the Colts fans must feel with Manning being released. Having one of the best QBs in NFL history for over a decade to having him released within a days time. |

Fred, he worries me some. He seemed to be more of a partier anyway.
Yeah, reading about how he made such a mess of defending that lawsuit against him was a WTF moment for me. Before that, I thought he was smart enough to handle himself. Now, I'm not so sure. |
Re: Chris Cooley Released
I just don't get it though. Fred Davis is one strike away from a year long suspension and Nile Paul has a pretty bad case of the drops. Ironically enough I prefer Logan Paulsen at this point to Niles Paul. Hopefully I'm wrong because Paul has tons of upside at TE but right now it's nothing more then potential and empty Shanon Sharpe comparisons.
Paul had one bad game and it was his first at TE. I think he rebounded pretty nicely. |
Re: Chris Cooley Released
Both parties in that case were a mess. Who do you trust if you're the judge? Geesh.

I think that would really set us back.
Very true, very true, obviously you nor I are either of them or close friends and family with them, so we really don't know, its just assumption and media that has us forming this opinion. I just see money as the root of everything in the world, and of course in todays NFL, and we've seen year after year guys do their best in contract years (cough, Albert Haynesworth, cough). So thats why I'm not worried about Fred because I think he realizes he's 1 blunt away from losing Millions. Trent on the other hand isn't in his contract year, so yes, he bothers me more, we'll just have to wait and see. I feel like TW and FD were more so testing the 'waters' of the NFLs drug policy, probably with the mind set of "Oh they never test us, nor have they test us in the 3 years we've been in the league, we're not gonna get caught". Side question, when the draft came out in '10 with TW, did we know he had done pot in college or was this all new to us last year? And Smoot, as for Cooley going to Oakland, I don't see it, because 1, they suck. 2, He'd be moving to the other side of the country for a bad team, 3, I feel like the four teams I mentioned before would be better because they are all east coast teams and 'close' to home, except Miami, but it is Miami. |
Re: Chris Cooley Released
Except that Cooley grew up in Utah. "Home" may be close to his family out there.
|
Re: Chris Cooley Released
I just suggested Oakland because of Al Saunders, that's all
As for Davis. First of all, everyone is one hit away from being sidelined for the year so I don't know why Davis' case is so special. And if the Redskins don't trust Davis enough they shouldn't even have kept him around this spring. |
Re: Chris Cooley Released
Except that Cooley grew up in Utah. "Home" may be close to his family out there.
Well, he was born and raised in Wyomming, went to school in Utah, but by home I mean here since he's been here 8+ years and found his wife here. But Ok, so teams close out there. Oakland--maybe but I don't see it. San Diego-nope. Arizona-maybe but they really really like Housler and have Heap. SLEEPER San francisco- he could backup another Davis and play before or after delanie walker. Denver---no. |
Re: Chris Cooley Released
Maybe Cooley wants (needs?) to get away from home for a while

OK, you keep making these little comments that are creating some ideas in my head that I don't want to think about if they're untrue. You've done it a few times in this thread. I don't expect you to spill Cooley's beans about his personal life but you're being such a tease...in every thread! |
Re: Chris Cooley Released
I'm just saying maybe being close to home is not what would help him. Maybe a fresh start and a total recommitment to just at least trying to become the player he once was would benefit him. You could apply it to any player in this situation really, this isn't exclusively about Cooley
|
Re: Chris Cooley Released
Cooley is not retiring. He will prolly play for the Panthers, Dolphins or the Rams.

I think in Cooley's case and a lot of other older vets father time has simply caught up to them. At 39 now I can feel the difference from when I was 20 something. My joints and back are much more sensitivity to workouts and physically demanding days then they were say 9 years ago. I workout and eat well but still I can feel the effects of age. |
Re: Chris Cooley Released
Cooley just turned 30. As long as his knees aren't shot he should be able to still play. Speed was never his game anyway.

Interesting list. I remember when we let CP go, there were rumors about the Giants getting him too...I don't see it with Chris. He'll probably get a call when some team has a devastating injury at TE like Gates/Graham/Finley/etc. Houston's TE has had trouble staying on the field...can't think of his name at the moment but he's very good when healthy. |

Man, Cooley was frikkin awesome. My personal favorite skin, with his cowboy hatred..........BTW,

Re: Chris Cooley Released
I could see him going to the Packers as well. Jermichael Finley is prone to injury and is very VERY streaky, and Cooley is more of a grind it out, sure handed player that can function well in the cold. Imagine him and Finley with dual TE set, with Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson split out wide.
Fukkin dangerous. SOmeone is gonna pick him up, he still has plenty of tread on those tires. BREAKING NEWS..... John Beck and Case Keenum battle it out to see who gets the nod for the Texans 3rd string (practice squad possibly) QB. The Nations attention turns away from Hurricane Issac to the BATTLE ROYALE OF THE CENTURY. Texans quarterbacks John Beck and Case Keenum will have a final chance to vie for a roster spot on Thursday night at Reliant Stadium. Coach Gary Kubiak announced Tuesday that backup quarterback T.J. Yates will not play against the Minnesota Vikings in the preseason finale. Beck, a sixth-year veteran, will start the game. Keenum, an undrafted rookie from the University of Houston, will play the entire second half. Im watching, I know that for damn site. |

Speaking of the storm, Isaac sucks. Water is everywhere and many trees are down. Luckily I still have power so I can still visit the Warpath. :)
Cooley just turned 30. As long as his knees aren't shot he should be able to still play. i never really paid attention, but did he ever play on coverage units? could be my imagination but i feel he would be a strong special teams player (despite his lack of speed). |

Yes sir. My house is ok because it is raised but there is flooding right across the street and my yard is a lake. I just hope the electricity lasts long enough to see the game tonight. :silly: |

Re: Chris Cooley Released
Some have been saying Broncos. I guess it makes sense -- childhood team, great QB, fairly young TEs.
