Oh don't get me wrong I agree with you but there is always a smear of luck that can't be denied ,the Giants where lucky the ref didn't call in the grasp on Eli in 07 , had they he'd have only one win not 2

it takes a lot of hard work and practice to get lucky.

when a fat lineman continues to trail a play he knows he will never catch up to but then finds himself in the right spot to recover a fumble, its not luck.

when a ball carrier fumbles the ball out of bounds, its not luck if he switched hands so he was carrying the ball on the outside.

im not sure what you are exactly asking of me.

my best assermation is "why does it take a lot of hard work to get lucky in sports?"

- i guess i would point to my examples previously provided. fat boy running down the field futilely trailing the fast boys gets rewarded w a fumble recovery bc he continued to pursue the play and got rewarded for his hussle by being in the right spot at the right time . .

but i often say "it takes a lot of hard work to get lucky" bc he i heard patrick roy say it years ago. i personally havent had an original thought in a long time.

The defensive lineman in OTM's example put himself in position to recover the fumble because he didn't give up and kept chasing the ballcarrier even though he knew he had no chance of catching him. I wouldn't call that luck; I would call it fortitude.

A problem with it? Probably not, but it would mean he isn't elite. It would mean he was an average or slightly above average QB. When we start saying "all the guy does is win", I think you overlook the main fact that the team surrounding that person has a lot to do with their success.

Also, Flacco threw matched half (11) of his TD total(22), for the regular season, in 4 games. So why is he he put up those kind of numbers in that four game span, but only managed 22 TDs for 16 games? Inconsistency. Bottom line. Flacco is not great. Flacco is not bad. Flacco is above average.

Two years ago, I had to defend Flacco from haters, now I'm having to do the opposite from people propping him up way too high.

Luck most definitely plays a part in winning a Super Bowl. The way the ball bounces or reflects from fumbles/tips, injuries, blown calls are some of the "luck" elements involved in winning it all. More than anything, it takes skill, hard work, and good coaching to win the game. That's not to say the best team always wins the big game, it's just they are the best team within that short time span.

When it comes to scouting players to draft when you talk about character, your not just talking about does he go out drinking all night, get into trouble, arrested or get high...your talking about discipline, drive and focus. No excuse for Geno Smith or Lacy.

What if RG3 had the drive of Jamarcus Russell? He wouldnt be playing this year...

Well I guess some of you will never consider RG3 to be elite, because its hard to see him putting up insane passing numbers as long as he's playing in a Shanahan offense that places such a high premium on the running game. I actually think 3800 yards and 25 TDs is probably his ceiling in this system.

Stats are overrated. Putting up big numbers in pass happy offenses don't make you elite. Matt Stafford or Tony Romo anyone?

I agree with this. I didn't really think about our system when I answered the question, but you are correct.

I'll make a change to my answer. If our RBs continue the type of success they have, I would be ecstatic with 20-25 TDs from RGIII.

Given the system, wouldnt his stats in the ground game also be included? He did put up 800 yards and 7 TD's running to go with the 3200 passing yards and 20 passing TD's. Putting both rushing and passing together, he had 4000+ yards and 27 TD's as a rookie, which is already above your ceiling. I realize passing is the main metric to rate QB's, but RG3 isnt a regular QB in that aspect.

If he didn't have the drive that he did I doubt we would have mortgaged the farm on him honestly. Shanny is better talent evaluator then Al Davis was towards the end of his life.

Looking at those two pictures I can't believe a professional RB could get that out of shape in 2 months. He said he ate a lot of fast food, what he failed to mention is that he did not move for 8 weeks from his couch while indulging in fast food.

It's almost like he made that movie that Morgan Spurlock made a few years ago "Super Size Me".

As far as Geno goes he actually had a pretty good report as far as playing QB, he just didnt run "gassers" well at the end of the day.

I thought Carlos was still really good last year. I thought the recent CB signings of Nnamdi and their attempt at Eric Wright were because of Culliver their NB. In the few games I saw of Carlos last year, he looked good to me and worthy of that contract.

The Pats averaged 74 plays per game?? That's crazy for the pro game. I'd guess that the average is in the 50's. I think Kelly will be able to run his offense. Maybe not at the college pace but he'll be able to go quickly. But in order to run as many as New England, he's got to get first downs and not turn it over. Not sure he can do that with his QB situation.

Exactly. Bottom line is Flacco is a proven winner. Not sure I would put him as an elite player but he's pretty damn good.
