Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread

Sources tell the Baltimore Sun that the Ravens and ILB Daryl Smith still have a "disconnect" on contract numbers.

Smith led the Ravens in tackles with 123 last season, playing all but two defensive snaps. GM Ozzie Newsome needs him back. Smith is likely hunting for more money than originally expected after watching 32-year-old Karlos Dansby squeeze four years and $24 million out of the Browns.

We ought to look into the possibility of "disconnecting" him from the Ravens altogether by signing him. Then we can draft a young ILB and go from there.

My remaining wish list: TE Andrew Quarless, S Clemons, DE Tony Starks, DT from Raiders, resign Reed, resign Tanard Kush, one:WR Britt, Nicks or Sidney Rice, and a decent Vet for Right Tackle competition, a reasonable CB and ILB.

TE Quarless - Good insurance for Reed.
S Clemons - Solid player but not a playmaker.
DE - Sign Antonio Smith today.
Doughty - I guess we have to sign him; he won't go away.
S Kush - Not re-instated.
WR - Rice can play. No to Britt and Nicks because they quit on their teams.
RT - I dunno. Didn't work last season.
CB - Sign Corey Graham today.
ILB - Steal Daryl Smith from Ravens since they don't want to pay him.

Wrong site, ladies.

This is getting concerning now though. We've missed out on Ward, Byrd, Mitchell, Jenkins, Whitner, Bethea...and pretty much all of the top safeties.

We should probably look at the recently-released Thomas DeCoud as our best option.

I think we'll still do well at CB. I didn't think we'd pay Talib what he wanted when we can get a solid CB for less money in Corey Graham, Captain Munnerlyn or Tarell Brown to team up with D-Hall.

Right Tackle is another position we should get covered too, either with a good FA or a 2nd-3rd round pick in this solid O-lineman draft. All of the expensive left-tackle money guys are getting signed now, but we do not need to stand that much for a RT.

Love the Roberts and Hayward signings so far and that guard we picked up sounds promising as a starter or at least solid backup.

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread

Clemons isnt a playmaker, but he is a play stopper.

Im for Reed just because he is a decent special teams player with leadership abilities.

I think we go Mays over Darryl Smith, but we are interested in both. It stinks what Cleveland did in handing out the worst contract of the day to a position of need for us.

I don't think Nicks quit as much as he was hurt, if it is a 1-2 year deal I am fine with that.

looking back the mitchell deal seems like the only one i thought we would have made.

reports were that we were targeting him.

im trusting the FO to have a game plan for FS.

I would like to see something done about RT in FA. Im not a big fan of starting rookies at the ends (unless they are blue chip talent like trent). I think SF got a bargain trading a 7th for martin who is a recent 2nd rounder at a position of need - RT.

I know reports are that we are looking to add another WR but i dont think that is a position of need. there is not a true no. 1 on the market and we dont need another no 3 or 4 receiver.

garcon, hank, roberts, moss, robinson = no more room for another average body. we already have 4 of them.

Good thing we have a #1 WR already, and I wouldn't call Roberts an average body until he plays, but I can see us adding another WR somewhere.

I'd REALLY love to just have one impact signing even if it's Orakpo. I don't want it just to "have one", but I see these others teams doing just fine resigning their own guys and still getting a big FA. I thought we had tons of cap space?

Unless anyone trusts Hankerson, which I don't, we need to add another WR2/WR3-caliber guy. Roberts is borderline WR2/3 but can return kicks too. Solid signing but we need a clear #2, which we may not have right now unless Roberts can step into it. Problem is, he's a slot WR, more of a WR3.

I still want Stephon Tuitt at DE with Pick #34.

I still think Britt (if we can get him on the cheap) is our #2. Or, Decker :-).

Right tackle Bruce Campbell (Panthers) to visit Redskins today, per Tandler.

Monkeydad 03-12-2014 09:46 AM

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread

Since we have not been spending on the secondary as we expected, we probably can afford Decker and I'd love that move. He can also return kicks...we need as many of those as we can get. Decker's visiting the Jets.

We have to be more attractive than them for a WR. We have a QB. They don't. Vick has been rumored to be an option for them, so they're apparently not sold or commuted to Geno Smith.

Some are suggesting Britt and Rice...I hate the idea of both. Neither can stay on the field, whether because of injuries or off-field issues. They've both shown that can play at a high level but both will be headaches.

He was on my Skins draft wish list out of college. Get the ink ready.

A bit injury-prone and has not been what he could be in the pros, but he's a beast and is only 25.

Should be cheap and if we don't land a top RT, he'll be an upgrade. If we do get someone, solid backup for both tackle spots.

The team on Tuesday afternoon scheduled visits with free agent cornerback Corey Graham, who spent the past two seasons with Baltimore, and defensive end Antonio Smith — a 10th-year veteran who played for the Houston Texans the past five seasons. The two players are expected to arrive at Redskins Park on Wednesday.

He was on IR all of last year, and played in 5 games the year before. Would this be a depth signing, or is he being looked at as a starter.

Upgrade if signed. Move Palombus to OG. Tom Compton as swing tackle.

Trent LT
Lauvau LG
Kory C (gain 10-15 pounds)
Palombus RG
Campbell RT

Cut - Chester, Monty

i would not count on campbell to be the answer at RT.

even if we signed him, im not sure he would make it on the opening day roster.

imo he has zero positives to hang your hat on other than he is a former terp and had "draft steal" hype in the draft.

Not zero. He is a great athlete. Perhaps the Skins think he can be "coached up". That's debateable but it might be worth a try at less than $1MM. We're not exactly loaded at OL.

Apparently some people actually trust Polumbus and Compton.

The more guys we being in that even have a chance at being an upgrade, the better.

If Campbell's career gets on track, he could be a big step up from what we had last year at the position. Also a decent fallback option if we can't sign or draft a better RT.

If we're going to address the position in the draft, we need a backup plan and I really don't want it to say POLUMBUS on its back.

The Panthers showed that you don't need to have a secondary like the Seahawks to have a dominant defense, your front seven dominates and your back four will be just fine, so maybe that is what Washington is thinking. Not to mention we do have some young guys in our secondary, maybe they are high on one or two of these guys.

agree, especially with the points on how poorly the Defense was built...but I know people hate it, but Haynesworth alone set this organization back, BIG TIME.

The Oline stuff im less inclined to believe because Kory L, Monty and Chester were awesome the year before. Now with the a system change, it really doesnt matter who is behind them, it makes no difference because I would expect them to struggle with Jay Gruden and his different running approach. Now the Polumbus not being upgraded, there is no fucking excuse for him.

im thinking the same way. there is still some guys avail who would be an upgrade for FS, there are still some decent corners and revis out there, it may be financially easier to upgrade the front 7 instead of getting into the secondary bidding war that was day 1.

RT is the one spot i think we need to put money at for a solid/acceptable starter. that is the one spot i want to address in earnest and not wait for the draft or late preseason cut.

I can see if they are willing to let P. Thomas and Crawford recover from injury and are maybe thinking of bringing Merriweather back as a reason to not go after one of the top guys at CB or S. I don't endorse the strategy, but I can see it as one of their ways of thinking.

I hope we make moves over the next few days to bring in at least one starter at safety (Clemons), a nickel CB (Munnerlyn or Graham), a couple of pass rushing DE (Smith is a good start) and a potential starting OL. I'm nowhere near the panic button yet. Too many times in the past I was dancing in March and drinking in October.

Exactly why I find it interesting there are some people out there, not a lot but some, that are going apeshit over how we didn't get Byrd, Talib, or even Mitchell. I know Mitchell's contract is pretty reasonable, but perhaps he just preferred going to Pittsburgh? Sometimes you can't buy everyone you want.

Point is all is not lost just because we didn't land those guys. Still other options out there including the draft. I know people are tired of hearing it, but Jackson could be reinstated too. Rambo could improve in year 2, and Thomas will be back in the mix.

And even if Mitchell's contract breaks down to an effective guarantee of 10 million for two years, that's still a lot of cap tied up in Mike 'freakin Mitchell.

If the Redskins make a competitive offer for Chris Clemons, that's all they really have to do. Just give him something that would make sense for him to sign, and let him decide to come here or not.

There are dozens of decisions made as far back as 2004 that have contributed to where we are today, Haynesworth IMO was merely a blip. For people to expect that it would be fixed in the short term or with a few signings, they are fooling themselves. It shouldn't take 3-5 years to turn things around but there's still some significant dysfunction & questionable decisions being made in the front office though.

That being said, the approach to free agency may turn out to be the right one, I'm willing to be patient and see the ultimate outcomes rather than the 24 hour reactions.

Judging from what we've done so far, it would appear that we have a budget of $4 mil. max per FA player.
