Skins vs. Cards Positives + Negatives
Here is my list of fixins:
Fire Haz - its message sending time. Promote someone from within on a trial basis and if need be address for real in the offseason. As many others have said make BA strictly a $ guy. First order of business in the offseason is to find a true GM with an eye for talent. Give Almo the effin ball. Make sure at all costs Rak does not sign! Draft Oline and DB's ONLY. Hit on a couple key free agents - focus on the front 7 ONLY. We do not need rb's, wr's, k's, p's. If they do all of this, and wait for it.........RG-3 can be RG-3 when he comes back (God that is thee biggest issue...again) than this team has a chance to not suck for years to come. I really do expect all of this to happen, I just dont see how it cannot. Edit: except Griff I mean. That is out of anybodies control. The rest of the stuff is all possible it just has to be carried out. |

I'm not sure that Haslett is the long term answer, but you can't say (with a straight face) that the defense is the biggest problem right now. This game shouldn't have even been close, let alone a loss. Put this one on all things offense, but mostly KC and his poor performance for 75% of the game. |
<snip> Players need to start making plays both big and small. I'm sick and tired of seeing wideouts dropping key passes (Roberts), defensive players dropping INTs (Orakpo in the AZ game, Breeland in the Philly game, etc., etc.), and Cousins throwing mind boggling INTs.
Aside from the Giants game, the Redskins are not getting blown out of the water (as they should be given our roster). Coaches and players just need to get their heads out of their asses and get their act together.
This! Outside of Jackson and occasionally Kerrigan and Trent Williams, no one on this team is making plays. We're constantly in situations where a play needs to be made to give us momentum or a huge score, but for whatever reason we never come up with them. Can't win like that. I think it was Ryan Clark (I love this guy's quotes, very honest) who said that our players seem to try to find ways to not lose, instead of trying to find ways to win. That seems like a great way to put it. It just feels like we're so close. If we could string a few wins together, maybe we could get some momentum and perhaps start playing better. I think some of us (including me) have deluded ourselves into thinking this roster is more talented than it really is, but I honestly don't think we're 3-13 bad. We just need guys to step up and make plays and start playing with an attitude. If you feel good, you play good. Unfortunately I think a lot of our players feel like losers. I can't wait for Griffin to come back. |
Re: Skins vs. Cards Positives + Negatives
Didnt get to see the game, just finished watching the 30 minute game rewind.
From my observations I thought the defense played pretty good. They got so close to sacking Palmer several times but just couldnt close the deal.3 guys had Palmer sacking him and he still got the pass off. Morris does not look slow to me,he looks as good as he ever has,Morris is not the problem,if he was behind Dallas's line he would be tying Jim Browns record also. Didnt look like a fumble by Roberts, bad call Terrible call on the pass interference on Breeland Defense kept us in the game and Cousins took us out of it |
Re: Skins vs. Cards Positives + Negatives
Defensive rankings based on yards are worthless IMO. I think right now we're middle of the pack in terms of defensive rankings based on yards, but are dead last in points (which is more important). So while we're not giving up a ton of yards, we're giving up points.
We're also dead last in giveaways/takeways (-9), with a whopping 13 giveaways and only 4 takeways. Players need to start making plays both big and small. Seemed that way to me, too. Helps to watch the game a few days later. If I had watched it live I would have thrown my TV through the plate glass window. Bottom line: we had FOUR turnovers in the 4th quarter! That's the stat that matters. |

One thing I do know because I've seen it several times before in the NFL: A new DC can make a big difference in a short period of time if the change is made during the season.
HOWEVER, isn't Haslett close with Jay Gruden? Didn't Gruden play for him or coach under him or something? Is Haslett the Gruden family's adopted uncle? I don't know the exact relationship but I don't get the feeling that Jay would be willing to make a change of DC's anytime soon. Besides, wasn't the bad defense under Shanahan really Shanny's fault because he wouldn't let Haslett "turn loose" the pass rushers? Regardless of what happened during Haslett's years under Shanahan, I can't explain away the remaining decades of his mediocrity as a DC. Perhaps it was due to global warming. |

I apologize. Forget my previous post. Haslett is a great DC and if our defense is poor it is in no way attributable to the current DC. In fact, there is nobody on planet Earth who could do a better job than Jim Haslett. |

Is Sean McVay the right guy for the Skins? Is he the guy who turns RG3 into that pocket passer? I have my doubts

Offense has been the biggest issue this season, yet no one is scrutinizing the offense because they are too busy bitching about the defense. I personally question the offensive play calling in light of the fact that we have such weak offensive line. Teams are very aggressive in stopping the run and trying to disrupt the passing. I don't know why we don't throw more slants or screen passes to take advantage of the opposing defense's aggressiveness. It seems that the team waits until the late in the 3rd or 4th quarter, to throw a screen pass to Roy Helu that goes for like 40 yards. We also can't seem to convert 3rd and short situations, I know this past Sunday there were about two or three (maybe more) situations, where we couldn't convert in short yardage situations. |

I question Forster. |
Re: Skins vs. Cards Positives + Negatives
The offense hasn't been consistently effective at all this season. Really, without Jackson's long touchdowns it would be borderline pathetic. A large part of that is definitely the weakness along the offensive line. Outside of Williams, everyone has played poorly. I truly hate looking towards Dallas with envy of any kind, but they have built a strong OL the right way. I've been an opponent of the 'WE MUST DRAFT OL EARLY' crowd every offseason but I am starting to see the errors of my ways. It's insane that other than Williams we haven't drafted an offensive lineman above the 3rd round in 15 years (Samuels & Jansen) and our 3rd round OL picks have been mediocre at best (Dockery, LeRiebust, Moses). That absolutely must be corrected.
Call me crazy but I will also put a lot of the offensive struggles on the fact that Griffin is hurt. He is far from perfect but the one thing he doesn't consistently do is hurt the team's chances to win. He doesn't have multiple turnover disasters like Rex Cousins does repeatedly. I hope these past few weeks will kill any of the discussion of a QB controversy going forward. Defensively, Haslett is a clown. Some of the coverage 'schemes' are just incomprehensible. Watching the Seattle game, the first touchdown was a pass a Pop Warner QB could have thrown. CBs playing outside leverage in the slot with single high safety shaded towards the weakside of the formation? There was not even a move made and it was a simple go route and Baldwin was open by 12 yards. Hopefully we hire Wade Phillips as our DC for next year. He's a 3-4 master and a helluva coordinator. |
Re: Skins vs. Cards Positives + Negatives
I would take Wade or dream hire would be Rex Ryan at DC.

If he is related to the McVay football family that worked in Tampa Bay, that is all that is required of him. We are now Tampa Bay North, as if the Bucs have won anything in this century. Note to Bruce Allen: The Redskins are not a ****ing coaching family reunion!!! |
Re: Skins vs. Cards Positives + Negatives
The funny thing is, the offense that Seattle runs now is exactly what we ran in 2012 with a few wrinkles added, but we got people talking about the Wilson blueprint. Even more hilarious is that we have more weapons on offense than Seattle does or at worst just as much, but this tea is delicious.

Re: Skins vs. Cards Positives + Negatives
It's the defense, the offense, Special Teams, poor players, poor play calling, lack of turnovers, a weak offensive line, poor QB play, lack of adjustments, failure to convert third downs, a rookie HC, weak coordinators, poor drafting, plain old choking, lack of vitamin D, and lastly injuries. The truth is we suck at just about everything!
There are no micro solutions to each of these problems that will add up to fixing the whole organization. Fixing an entire organization requires strong leadership. Do we have the right leaders in place, or not? That is the overriding question. We'll find out soon enough. |

Re: Skins vs. Cards Positives + Negatives
Sean McVay is the grandson of John McVay one time 49er GM during the 80's responsible for drafting and acquiring Steve Young, Rice, Lott, Haley, Craig, etc.

Re: Skins vs. Cards Positives + Negatives
There is plenty to dislike about Haslett. I am not giving him a pass.
But to be fair, since DHall went down we don't have anyone who can really stick to #1 receivers. This is a really hard problem to scheme around. The defense played well until DHall went down and then hasn't played all that well since. |

They don't have them, they adapt their scheme to their talent. You spent a 2nd round pick on Amerson to make him a top corner, put him in position to do so. Breeland is developing, put him in positions to succeed. While DHall being out hurts the defense, it shouldn't cripple the other 10 players remaining. Haslett's defensive calls are pretty bad and have been forever. |

We are at the bottom of the league in 3rd down conversion percentage; it's funny that you mentioned Dallas, they are first in the league in 3rd down conversion. |

Do not ask Biggers, Breeland, Riley and the two slowest safety's in the NFL to cover for a long period of time. He needs to start all out blitzing a lot more, make the QB get rid of the ball quicker and ask them to tackle. Obviously asking them to cover with a 4-5 man rushes won't work. It's proven it won't work. |
Re: Skins vs. Cards Positives + Negatives
So much wrong with this thread. We dont need to blow everything up but since day 1 its been about how far this offensive line will take us. We are seeing it now....
Really need to upgrade the whole right side. |
Re: Skins vs. Cards Positives + Negatives
the problem on D is pretty straight forward imo. we are idiots.
we heavily invested in pass rush at the expense of the secondary. we went all in on the pass rush banking on the fact that it would cover up our secondary deficiencies. sans the jags game, every QB has posted a QBR above 100 on us and I dont think offensive coordinators are having much trouble dissecting haslett's schemes and tendencies. $21.6 mil = avg NFL team salary for DL $26.5 = redskins salary $15 mil = avg NFL team salary for LB $23 = redskins salary $12.3 mil = nfl avg for corners $7.8 = redskins corners (highest cap hit is tracy porter at 2.8) $8.2 mil = nfl avg for safeties $3.7 = redskins (highest merriweather at 1) Redskins salary-cap breakdown: Defense - Washington Redskins Blog - ESPN |
Re: Skins vs. Cards Positives + Negatives
Something I find interesting is that our offense's average starting field position is on pace statistically to be the worst in the history of the NFL. Fact.
|
Re: Skins vs. Cards Positives + Negatives
Alfred Morris is not running the ball enough....that's a large negative......he's just averaging 4.0 yards a carry......there's not enough talent along the o line.

Really need to upgrade the whole right side.
i have to respectfully disagree my friend. since day 1 it should have been about the O line (and FS imo) but instead and in reality imo ... since day 1 this team was built to win 43-41 by being aggressive on both sides of the ball. on offense it was going to be 3 or 4 wide sets, using d jax to dictate coverage and open the middle and underneath for garcon and reed. pick your poison. on defense, haslett was supposed to unleash the hounds and get after the QB by blitzing from all angles. we didnt need shut down corners, we only needed guys to be able to bump at the line and then play man for 3 seconds or less. |
