With all of the talk around us needing safety help and trust me I am firmly on that bandwagon. Did everyone forget that we picked up Duke Ihenacho last year and then he got hurt, I remember him being pretty good and could with Phillip Thomas be a decent safety tandom, as I believe that we are much more in desperate need of yournger cheaper more effective o-line as well as pass rush help.

That duo wouldn't inspire much confidence IMO. And they're both better suited for strong safety. We can do a lot better and we need to.

we limped into this past season with a "everything needs to go right for this group to be serviceable" secondary.

I want FS addressed with a bonafide NFL caliber starter. not a rookie, not a guy who may rebound, not a guy who takes a vet min contract.

imo the NFL is changing. FS is vital now. SS is very important. elite corners are luxuries which i would love to have, but if you give me an elite FS and a solid SS, i can mask average corners with a decent pass rush and good cover line backers.

yeshh .. i feel like i just described the seahawks D sans the elite corners.

the idea that a great pass rush masks a weak secondary is not necessarily true in today's offensive friendly NFL. even with a good pass rush, QBs/OCs are finding ways to create more time and take the top off.

Here's a UFA to consider as a Third Down Back: Shane Vereen.

- 25 years old
- 52 receptions last season. 3 receiving TD's.
- 4.1 YPC. 2 rushing TD's last season.
- No fumbles in 2014.
- Exceptional quickness
- Great hands
- Good route runner

Whatta ya say?

Does he block well? Because Helu does all of the above well too and will probably be cheaper.

1. i think Gruden def wants to add a pass catcher out of the back field
2. i think we should find our own shane vereen. he may want 4-5 mil per when we can find an equivalent for less or draft one mid/late (if he isnt on the roster already).
3. I think vereen's stats are a product of brady/belicheck.

edit - yeah helu is pretty much vereen without the spotlight or targets. good call

They are in love with Silas Redd and Gruden has had liked Thompson since college, I doubt we keep Helu or sign a FA RB this year.

Why did the Skins let Helu become a UFA? Is it because Helu is looking for a larger role?

What makes you think Helu will re-sign here? If he doesn't, we'll need someone to fill his shoes.

BTW, no RB on the Redskins, including Helu, was anything to brag about in pass protection last season.

Redd could become a decent RB, but he doesn't look like a 3rd down back to me.

Thompson doesn't impress me at all in any role. I think he'll get cut in 2015.

So, I think we'll need somebody in Helu's role for next season.

Re: 2015 Free Agents

A running back I'd like us to look at in the draft is Jeremy Langford from Michigan State. Not an elite playmaker like Abdullah or Gordon, but he's got decent speed and quickness, good hands out of the backfield, and he's a good blocker as well.

Excerpt from Dane Brugler's write-up on CBS:
Langford really shines in areas where most young backs struggle like pass protection, reliability in the screen game and also the ability to get stronger and better as the game goes on.
1. Not a huge priority probably, Skins will look to upgrade if possible.

2. I think he'll test the market, not sure the Skins would push hard to keep him any way.

3. Helu and Vareen are similar players, my point is if you want Vareen you're basically getting another Helu but at a premium price. I'm not personally advocating for either guy.

at the end of the season, gruden was putting thompson in to pass block. he wasn't amazing at it, but he was better than the other three RBs.

Re: 2015 Free Agents

Starting today teams can waive players from their rosters. Players with four or more seasons immediately become free agents and able to sign with any team while those with less than four years in the league are subject to the waiver system.

The Skins are fifth in line to claim a player with less than four years of service. I can see how this could conceivably help us but i have some questions.

First of all, why would teams want to waive players at this time? It seems to me that they might want to wait.

Secondly, if the Skins pick up a waived player, would they need to drop another player from their roster?

I'm having trouble grasping the benefits of these new rules.

Matty is right, we need better pass blocking from our RB's.

We need to find someone who can do what Helu does and block, too. It won't be a tragedy if we let Helu walk.

Chris Thompson has a hard time staying on the field. He's not the best replacement for Helu.

Exactly the kind of player SM needs to find. Undrafted FA that can come in and add quality depth. Not start right away but be a 3rd or 4th corner.

Does the NFL really need the $400. fee ?....... I know they need to keep the numbers down, but there must be a better way

Yea thats kind of greedy ... They should pay the scouts etc a per diem to attend out of the league pocket. Not force these potential players to pay them..

Iupati is only an elite run blocker you guys do know that right? His Pass blocking is below average and that's what we need imo more of a hybrid who can do both but im looking more at his pass protection.

Terrell Owens can wear a disguise, use a fake name, and lie about his age but can he scrape up the $400 fee? That's the question in my mind.

Re: 2015 Free Agents

the only reason i can think that the NFL is charging players to attend is bc they are not signed with a team, not under NFLPA .... im guessing?

does seem odd and petty since, ultimately, it is there to benefit teams. there might be a legal reason for it.

Re: 2015 Free Agents

the Redskins could have a lot of cap space, rumors are there will be several vets cut due to big contracts.... Bowen, Chester, Coefield, Paulson, Porter, Hall, etc.

They now have somewhere between $14- $20 million dollars, when you add the expected increase, and the cuts, they should have $30-$40 million dollars in room. I hope they go after B level free agents at safety, OL, CB, DL, and TE.

Hall has a $1.25 million dollar bonus due if he is on the roster in March. They will probably cut him, then resign him.

he hasn't looked good at CB, so why would switching to a new position he has 0 NFL experience in suddenly make him better? we should be moving him to #3 CB until/unless he proves otherwise.

Watching him in college and the NFL, I always thought he fit better as a FS rather than a CB.
