Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Redskins hired Chargers LBs coach Joe Barry as their new defensive coordinator.

Rapoport had the exact same report six days ago, but it turned out the Redskins were still chasing down other candidates. Only after Vic Fangio chose to go with John Fox and the Bears did Barry get back on the top of the list. So now the 'Skins are settling for an underwhelming Barry, who was the Lions defensive coordinator during 2007 and 2008 -- when the team went winless one year and ranked last in total defense both years. This Redskins unit is going to be a defense to attack from a fantasy perspective once again in 2015.

done deal
Jim Schwartz could provide both....if we had interest before, why not now.

I think the biggest thing holding Schwartz back is not having a proper Bruce Allen connection. eff this sh*t
So you're assuming that Schwartz really wants to be here?

Fangio had no connections to Allen and he was the team's #1 candidate from the beginning. So can we can tone down with the whole networking/connections complaints.

The funny thing is that Fangio went to Chicago because he has strong ties to Fox.

Doesn't matter about Fangio really? We have shit personnel and it's not like he's going to make gold out of poop. Besides, why would we trot him in here with a huge possibility of them cutting ties with Gruden next season?

I'm Going to give Barry the benefit of the doubt on his latest work as an LB coach with SD. Glad this search is over and can move forwards. Overall this offseason has been great, we got the best GM available and OL coach. Looking towards free agency and hope we can get Mike Iupati, he would be my #1 target if they signed someone.

At first glance this Barry hiring looks like weak shit to me, but that's the status quo for this franchise as of late, so w/e. Guess it won't matter if Gruden doesn't get a 3rd season.

I don't have any particular beef with Barry, honestly. Who knows, after learning from his stint in Detroit, maybe he is the next big thing. However, I am not particularly excited by the hire and it smacks me of the same old, same old.

On the other hand, I will be peeved it RM is retained. If RM is promoted to Asst. HC Defense or some such crap (of which I have heard rumblings), I am likely to cause serious property damage to my house, car and/or electronics.

I agree with your last point but defensive turnarounds happen every year. I will be rooting for Barry but really don't see much to get excited about at this point.

What I really want to know is whether Jay Gruden and Joe Barry know one another? Or is this a Bruce Allen connection? Maybe one of you guys can enlighten me.

Depending on the answer, it begs one of the following questions:

1) Why the F is Bruce Allen finding candidates for coaches?? It should be Jay's hire, Jay's search. If Bruce has any say in assistant coaching hires then I'm going to freak the F out.

2) What in the world made Jay Gruden think Barry was the man for the job when Wade Phillips was available.

PS if true that the Redskins ruled out Wade because of his age they just violated the Civil Rights Act.
You are like the 5th person to threaten property destruction with a Morris hire.
He was the secondary coach for a very poor secondary for years now.

i was also in the "anybody but morris" camp but cooley said position coachs do not get much say in weekly game plans and are generally relegated to "yes men". he sd he really liked morris, he knows football and the players really like him.

as a casual fan, it is hard for me to know what is and isnt a good hire. Track record of Fangio with 4 straight top 5 defenses is damn impressive. I dont need window dressing of "good motivator" or "players coach" with a track record like that.

Im willing to give morris a chance to stay on if Barry likes him.

^^^ first post on a chargers fan forum talking about losing Barry. To try and pre-gauge a situation, I like to see what fans of that team thinks. Its not scientific but its a good start.

Odd that they seem more interested in discussing back to the future, the movie.

With the Lauvaua signing, every single fan was glad he was gone and couldnt understand why we made him a day 1 FA priority to the tune of 17m for 4 yrs.

Both. Gruden and Barry(as well as Morris) coached together in Tampa... and Allen was the GM for part of those years.

As team President Allen is responsible for every hire so you can be sure he had a say in it. That's what team Presidents do.

Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News

It was (probably) Gruden's hire with veto authority by BA. Who knows, maybe this is a "I've had my eye on him for a while now" type hire by Gruden.

It certainly smells funny to me b/c of all the Tampa connections, but who knows. No choice but to see. I have been firmly in Gruden's corner. Hopefully, this is his hire. If Barry pans out and we see some baseline improvement, then I am okay with that (Just by the eyeball test, I think the talent here is better than the talent he had in Detroit. Not by much, but still better).

On the other hand, if the D doesn't show some improvement, then sweep clean in 2016 and turn the keys of the franchise over to Scot McC.

Remember, in SF, McC was hired by Mike Nolan but then McC won the power struggle and fired Nolan the next year. If history has to repeat itself to get a winner around here, so be it.

1. Vic probably didn't want to come here..same as Schwartz who people keep mentioning.
2. We have complained for years about hiring guys based on past performance. (Wade, Vic, Mangini would have been one of those.)
3. Bottom line Jays job on the line, if we win 4 to 5 games whole staff will be gone. If I was him I would have gone with Wade who has a track record of quick turnarounds on D.
4. Joe Barry seems likes a good old boy hire but I am willing to give him a chance.

Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News

I don't like this hire one bit. Lets be honest guys, our coordinators are very sub par. I don't care what talent you have, 0-16 in Detroit is unacceptable and is partly to blame on Barry. This is a downgrade from Haslett, but maybe a fresh voice can help. Our offensive coordinator, Sean Mcvay, is a 28 year old with some UFL experience, and very little NFL experience (except for the Redskin mandatory Tampa experience). I know Jay is calling the plays, but we need more proven coordinators.

Very good hires at GM and offensive line coach, though, so there is a silver lining...

Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News

OK so Gruden knows him, which steers me in the direction that this was Jay's hire. Fine, that's the way it should be.

But I really get sick and f'n tired of the 'hiring guys you know' concept. If all I did was hire people I went to school with or worked with in the past I'd be closing myself off to so many candidates. It's a losing mentality.

Trust doesn't have to come from a prior working relationship, trust can also come from mutually aligned goals. Stupid decision.

Still very unimpressed with Jay Gruden.

Not really. Barry is given credit by the local media for turning in a really good season and getting the most of San Diego's LB corp despite having to use a lot of back ups and lesser talent.

RM is a guy who has been around the block, been a DC, a HC and a position coach for many years with marginal success at each stop.

Then again, that may just be the Kool-Aid (weak as it is at this point) speaking.

Before I throw my tantrum, I want to see what happens to Morris. I believe it is time for him to move on. Otherwise, his influence will far outweigh his significance and both Barry & Gruden will need to be looking over their shoulder because RM is a BA bud and potential replacement for both/either.

Plus, he has a GREAT personality.

Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News

My guess is some of the bigger names may have not wanted to come--it's a shit D, talent-wise, and DC has a reputation of being a place where folks get scapegoated for organizational problems. Who would want that job? They all probably were asking for 4-5 years guaranteed big money, and that's not gonna happen, I suppose. Why not go to a good D and a functional organization? Wade may have come, but I think he'd want big money and there seems to be worry about his age (not my worry, but whatever).

So they went with Barry who at the very least is motivated to clear his good name after the stink of the Lions and who seems well-liked in SD at his position. Plus, he's a known commodity--the up-side of the good ole boy thing is that you know to a good degree what you're getting. An organization that works well together is something we've rarely had here, just sayin. Plus, he agreed to come. Snyder's money can't buy everything and it may be that BA is starting to feel tired of paying all these coaches to sit on couches and watch the tube.

My bottom line: we need better talent on the field. If Barry works, fine. If not, when we've got some legit talent, we'll get somebody better. WE ARE YEARS AWAY, folks. Remember that.

Step 1...hire the best GM available
Step 2...hire the worst DC available

One step forward...one step back (keeping Morris would make 2)
