Pete Carroll to the Raiders, didn’t see that one coming
After losing out on Ben Johnson; this was probably the best Tom could do. A veteran coach in a very tough division ; is probably what they needed. Given his age, probably only a 3-4 year gig. Hopefully Pete grooms a couple of Potential successors. Pats- Hire Former Titans coach, Mike Vrabel Bears- Hire Lions OC Ben Johnson Jets- Hire Lions DC Aaron Glenn Jags- Hire Bucs OC Liam Coen Raiders- Hire former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll Cowboys- Saints- |
Re: The annual NFL coaching carousel
Carroll to the Raiders should be interesting. I always felt he never got enough credit for how good of a coach he is winning a college title and NFL. He's got a ton of experience and good defensively. Seattle just wanted a change when they parted ways.
I do have respect for guys in their 70s like Belichick and Carroll that refuse to retire and love the game too much so choose to coach. |
Re: The annual NFL coaching carousel
Carroll can make them competitive again, as long a he doesn't have to put up with ownership BS. He always seemed to have control in Seattle.
Saints job looks like the poisoned chalice. With their cap hell, probably not a surprise. |

Wisely we refused. Their qb situation is not good. Have no clue what their plans are at qb considering draft isn't good for them and fa will have a lot of older, expensive options. |

Slowik fired, does he go to Dallas or NO or take time off?

OL coach is out too. With all the injuries etc. Slowik feels like a sacrificial lamb firing. Or did they not get on so the decision was to fire both? Be surprised if Slowik doesn't look at the NO job at least.

He was pretty coveted for head coaching jobs last year. Imagine he gets a look. No clue what Houston is thinking or who they are targeting here.

They didn’t like Stroud regressing a bit from last year. Was it Demarco? The gm? The owner? Whoever it was , Bobby got the blame. |

Still think it's hasty and cutthroat like Wilkes getting fired as DC of the Niners last year after nearly winning the Super Bowl. Houston's oline ranked 2nd worst in the NFL this year. Imagine this was way more of a problem than Slowik:

“Brian Schottenheimer is known as a career assistant,” Jones said. “He ain’t Brian no more. He is now known as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.” Not worried about Dallas being relevant anytime soon no matter the coach as Jones has already stated he's not budging an inch on the GM role. |

They know they aren’t winning anything until after Jerry dies. Don’t know if Stephen would be a good owner, when he inherits the team? |

I'm not 100% certain but I don't think Jerry has any succession plans, perhaps he wants the team to be sold when he dies? |

I now know the HC of the Vikings and the GM of the Jets. Both were QB's at SDSU. Both a lot more successful than me lol. |

Re: The annual NFL coaching carousel
With the hires so far, which would you say was the 'worst' coached division and which the 'best'? On paper the best has to be the AFC West now; Reid, Payton and Harbaugh, with Carroll now snapping at their heels. Worst, for me is tough because the AFC East should be considered, but it's one of the South's; for me it's the AFC South. Hard to see a championship team coming from that division with the Texans seeming to regress and the rest mired in mediocrity.

Re: The annual NFL coaching carousel
Since we don't have a conference weekend thread. IMO if McDermott doesn't win this game he is done. How long do you give a coach that can't win that one game every year?
|
Re: The annual NFL coaching carousel
Well, he lost. Yeah, the Bills could have an opening. Both the Ravens and Bills failed this year.

He's 0-4 against the Chiefs in the playoffs. I get it the refs are definitely on the Chiefs side, but you gotta at least ONE of those games. He can't do it. |

Agreed. I think he should have been fired a year or two ago. |
Re: The annual NFL coaching carousel
I don't want any more coaches to get fired. Kliff and Josh Allen could be a thing. I'd rather run it back with our offense next year.
But wow, being a Bills fan would be terrible. You know your team is NEVER going to win a super bowl. They are professional losers. They're like the heel in wrestling. |
Re: The annual NFL coaching carousel
I still don't think Buffalo fires McDermott. He's gotten so close just can't get over the hump. Chiefs dynasty is no joke at all, and McDermott and the Bills are trying to get their ring during it. Again would be very surprised if McDermott is gone in Buffalo.

Re: The annual NFL coaching carousel
On the one hand I can see the argument if you can't get over the last hurdle, we look for someone who can, there's the consideration of what message the organisation sends sacking the guy that got them to the championship game again. I'd be surprised if they fire him now, but maybe not renew his contract when the time comes. I think it depends on his relationship with the whole organisation; do you want to be rebuilding a coaching staff, break relationships between the current staff, players and FO and rebuild those, and all after being 1 drive away from the SB. It's a big call.

Re: The annual NFL coaching carousel
best news today
"Breaking: #Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury — despite interest from the #Saints and other teams — has decided to stay in Washington for a second season following a remarkable turnaround that saw the team go from 4 wins to an NFC Championship appearance. His return ensures continuity for the Commanders’ offense heading into 2025. Kingsbury will be a top HC candidate again next year, but the opportunity in Washington was too good to walk away from now." |

KK is great with offense and qbs. Hope this is long term but will gladly take 2025 as an assurance at this point. |

Mike McCarthy will sit out 25 and try again in 26. He only had interviews with Bears and Saints. Speculation is Saints will hire Kellen Moore , whom they just interviewed but can’t hire him until after the Superbowl.

McCarthy obviously knows its a good ole boys game. Someone will hire him in 2026 because...that's it....just because. |

AZ is still paying Kliff HC coach money and I'm sure he's getting a nice paycheck from the Commanders. He has turned down NFL jobs before, and will likely be very picky if/when he decides to be a HC again. |
Re: The annual NFL coaching carousel
KK is playing his cards right. Another gem of season here with JD and he will have teams falling over themselves to hire him. Plus as Ruhskins said he's being paid very well right now. No need to rush to move on.
|
Re: The annual NFL coaching carousel
Depends on his exact motivation. Getting a ring as priority, or simply being a successful HC. Wherever he goes now (NO really the only opening) he'd have to all but start from scratch, so at least 2-3 years away from a ring. He was 1 game away from the SB this year, so he's more likely to get to the big one here than with any other opening. Me, I'd want a SB ring then leverage that into a top HC job.

Re: The annual NFL coaching carousel
While we wait for the Saints to likely hire Kellen Moore after the Superbowl; here’s a look at the 25 hot seat.
Giants- Brian Daboll and his GM Joe Schoen are on the hottest seats. Given the nfc east has 2 playoff capable teams and 3, if Dallas bounces back; Giants are destined for a Top 5 pick again. 2025 is almost certainly their last year. Panthers- Young finally showed some life after he came back from his benching. The Panthers should be better, as long as Young continues to improve. If he reverts, Tepper will ax Canales. Also, how much improvement does Tepper expect? They won’t be a playoff team in 25 but should be better. Will that keep Tepper happy. Browns- Really depends what they do at QB. Do they draft a qb? Watson likely will miss time in 25 and he’s done. Do they take the pain and cut him now? Stefanski’s future depends on what they do. The Watson deal screws them over for 2 more years. Steelers- No, Tomlin won’t be fired but eventually Rooney might decide it’s better to move on from Tomlin. A mutual parting could finally happen, if they don’t get a playoff win or Tomlin finally has a losing season. Colts- Irsay maybe getting tired of Shane Steichen not making playoffs and Anthony Richardson is likely a bust. Titans- Callahan was almost one and done. What they do at qb is vital. Do they run it with Will Levis, who’s likely a bust? Draft a QB with their #1 pick. Bills- Another season not in the Superbowl and McDermott may finally be let go, especially if he loses to Chiefs in playoffs again. Dolphins- McDaniel hasn’t done much. Yeah, he made playoffs his first 2 years but they were quick exits. He slipped to 8-9 in 24. They probably need a playoff win for him to return. I listed 8 potential changes but doubtful it’s that high, probably on the low side for 25. Only one that seems a lock; is the Giants. |
