Re: 2013 Free Agents
One thing to remember about off the field troubles, re: Jones and Talib is that players are at the biggest risk of getting themselves into trouble when they are younger. When you're talking about 26, 27, 28 year old guys, you typically aren't dealing with immaturity.
I mean, when was the last time Ben Roethlisberger was in the news for something negative? 2 maybe 3 years ago? There was a time not too long ago where the Steelers were legitimately considering parting ways. There's always Brandon Lloyd or DeAngelo Hall types who never grow up, sure, but character is a much larger concerns with draft prospects because many ARE going to get in trouble and lose years off their pro careers. |

Talib will stay now that New England has the money to resign him with Tom Brady redoing his deal. They got a lot of cap space. May be able to resign Welker and vollmer |
Re: 2013 Free Agents
You can't look at the Hall situation in a vacuum. It's not who can we get for 8 mil that would be that good.
First off, Hall isn't even going to make 8 million next year, and he knows that. So asking the question who can we get for 8 mil next year to fill his spot, is a moot point. So the question is who can we get for 4 million? And is said player going to take reps from a possibly emerging Minnifield/Crawford down the line, due to guaranteed contract? Will said player take the free agent, I've been paid plunge? Will said player alter our drafting strategy and prevent us from drafting a CB? I personally would like to see what Hall can do with descent safety play behind him in the scheme. One thing Hall can do is make a play on the ball, with a better pass rush and a safety that can allow Hall more leeway to take those chances, we may see a much better performance from Hall. IMO this season we should acquire a CB either via draft/FA but I don't think said DB should be our #1 CB, or at least expected to be. If he pulls a Sherman and emerges, that's all the better for the Skins. But the last thing I want to do, is go spending 8 mil on a new #1 CB. |
Re: 2013 Free Agents
I would drop hall to 4-4.5 mil a year. Grab a RT, MLB, and a safety in FA with the rest.

Re: 2013 Free Agents
Would you guys consider Ellerbe from the Ravens to replace fletch?

Personally would like to see what we have in Robinson first. We got Riley as a thumper, and Robinson is the better LB in coverage. Could be precisely what we need considering how poorly we did vs TEs last year. Priorities need to be locking up Zo and R Jackson. After that I'd look towards starting RT and FS, and competition for CBl. |
Re: 2013 Free Agents
I haven't seen much of anything in Robinson, but its because most of us haven't. I have no idea how to judge hum.
You are correct though in that we need a tall coverage MLB. As far as Zo and Jax, of course that is number 1, if it is affordable which I beleive it can be. Jackson is an RFA (so we have cheaper options as fair as price + draft picks if the plater is signed else where) and I have an idea Zo won't have a big enough market to warrant him leaving. Or who knows maybe someone want to vastly over pay them? I would also like to see us keep Kory L, Pulombus (as depth), or just Kory L. Young is high in my mind, but as much as I like Davis if he commands to much on the open market I let him walk. If we somehow recoup cap space (doubtful) then I may up my offer, but we won without him and there are options out there. That being said Paulsen is another RFA I would put the tag on if we cant get him signed to a multiyear deal. |

Ellerbes good, but like someone else said, I'd like to see what we got in Robinson. If Lorenzo goes and fletcher goes, I'm signing Larry Grant from San Fran, because he sits behind the 2 best MLBs in the game and is a special teams captain. In the limited action he's played on San Frans defense, he looked good and like he has a lot of potential. If Zo stays and Fletch retires, I'd bring in Bart Scott as insurance incase Robinson can't hold up. If Scott is ''too old'' then I wouldn't mind asking Oakland about Rolando McClain. |
Re: 2013 Free Agents
I have a couple of questions:
If Fletcher retires, do the Skins recover his entire $6M+ in salary cap room? Does anyone know what Tanard Jackson has done, if anything, about his substance abuse problem? The reason I'm asking is that I'm wondering if he has gone to rehab, stayed away from dope, and made a commitment to a lifestyle change could he and the Redskins seek an early lifting of his suspension so he could participate in Training Camp? The Skins hold his NFL rights and the man can play football. A straight T. Jackson could help this team. |

Subtract that from his total and that gives you how much cap relief we get. |

Certainly. I was making that assertion based on his college scouting reports, and what I heard out of camp last year. In addition, just yesterday on Inside the Locker Room, B Mitch and Doc were gushing about him, specifically his coverage skills. But as you said, we haven't gotten to see much of him.
As far as Zo and Jax, of course that is number 1, if it is affordable which I beleive it can be. Or who knows maybe someone want to vastly over pay them?
I could see the Redskins allowing the Market to set their value. I personally think Zo is pretty underrated by fans. People treat him like he's a special teamer and neglect that he played both ILB/OLB last year and fairly well. It's a lot harder to find a diverse player, that can win their match-up more than they lose it, and follow their assignment within a scheme, than some seem to think. It essentially frees up both a roster space and some cap room, because one person can fill the role that two players usually have on a team. Not to mention, if need be, I'm sure he could add 30+ LBs and play 5 tech DE lol. Zo has a smart football mind IMO, and his depth is crucial, especially if London walks.
I would also like to see us keep Kory L, Pulombus (as depth), or just Kory L. Young is high in my mind, but as much as I like Davis if he commands to much on the open market I let him walk. I actually have been working on a piece, that discusses market forces in building a team. Most recently I think the undervalued TE, was a great building block. Hopefully I can post it one day, if I ever finish. |
