I don't recall the statistic (didn't look it up), but it's a fact that most car-cycle accidents are caused by the driver of the [U]car[/U]. Either the car driver did not see the cycle, or they misjudged the distance & speed of the bike.

With so many people depending on him, Ben had an obligation to his team and fans to ride responsibly. You can't avoid the risk, but you can take steps to minimize the damage. After Kellen Winslow Jr, you'd think he would know that. :nono: (spoken as someone in his young 50s whose risky days are behind him.)

Wonder if he will wear a helmet now?

Could it be that the theft of his ATVs was the best thing to happen to Sean Taylor?

This really upsets me, at first guys at the golf course I was playing today (when I heard about it) said he was in critical condition, and my heart just dropped.

How in the hell can you not wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle....you have to be kidding me. He would have walked away from this thing with very very minor injuries with one on....and to be quite frank, I'm trying to figure out how he even survived it.

That being said, I dont think not wearing a helmet makes him "selfish"...I just think it makes him stupid.

Sorry, I can't agree that it's all about personal freedom. When morons refuse to wear helmets or buckle up, and then get hurt in accidents, it affects us all in terms of higher insurance rates for everyone. The cost of surgery, medical care, rehab is covered by insurance and then passed along (in a fashion) to all policy holders by the insurance company. You don't honestly think that the premiums you pay would cover all of your medical expenses in a major car accident, do you? Because they won't and the insurance company recoups its costs by allocating their expenses to all of us.

is he going to be out for the whole season??? if he was wearing a helmet id have more sympathy but he had such a good future ahead... he screwed up

Right. I'm all for personal freedoms as long as they don't infringe on other people right's (ex. smoking).

the stats might say that most of car-cycle accidents are caused by the car... whoever's fault it is, the biker still gets zipped up in the body bag...

it's like pedestrian laws... you may have the right of way, but if you get hit chances are you're still dead...

either way; you wont see me on a bike...

My feeling is that governmentally, there is not a reason to force people to wear helmets. Common sensically (look it up, it's a word), one would be foolish not to.

I agree that it's a personal decision - it's stupid not to wear one, but it should be a personal freedom to make that decision. Do we let the government tell us what is good for us and make us do everything their way ? Where would the line be drawn ?
