Re: Run the damn football!

I didn't see the Titans Game so I can't comment on it specifically. But what's baffling me is this: As "gimmicky" as Saunders may be, his offense at its core is like Gibbs'. It's predicated on the run. That's been a staple of both coaches' offense for the past twenty+ years so I guess I'm not understanding what the issue is now.

So with that in mind, let me throw this out there. And maybe it belongs in a second thread. Or not at all. But here goes

Are we masking serious issues with the offensive line? Is Samuels not worth mentioning in the same breath as guys like Lachey, Roaf, Pace? Is Dockery an average, at best, guard? Is Thomas not fully healthy? And so on?

Well it's sort of what I'm wondering with Thomas. Remember after the Jags game Gibbs said that Thomas told him his hamstring hurt too much so don't run any pulling plays. Is that still the issue?
The Colts are ripe for the picking if we just pound the ball down their freaking throats. We're a team right now that is perfectly built for playing smashmouth. We have a physical OL and very nice depth at RB. So what's the problem?

RUN THE DAMN FOOTBALL!
I do agree with the need to pound the Colts. But to say they're ripe for the picking is a gross overstatement. If they're ripe for the picking on the ground, then we're WAAAY ripe for the picking through the air.

What do you think Peyton is going to do to our secondary in his house with no crowd noise? [shudder]

Although i believe we needed much more Portis as well, I saw at LEAST 3 occasions where Moss had got by EVERYONE in the Tenn secondary only to be over or underthrown! I wouldn't be too quick to blame the offensive approach or philosophy. We have execution issues and it starts with the QB.

I don't know if it's Brunell or the receivers routes... but as of late I'm def. seeing some timing issues.

"Every week you turn in your five favorite runs. It's not a secret what I like. The whole world knows what I like," Portis said. "I like to have my shoulders squared running downhill. When I'm running sideways, I'm getting blasted, twisted up, taking shots. I adjusted my style to fit the game plan."

that is all.

Portis is crying out to be fed the ball and get back to the power plays! Just like we've been saying all this week, we need to run the damn ball and run it with power! Listen to the man, Al.

They're 5-0 but a very shaky 5-0. The same Titans that took us down took them to the brink. I call that ripe for the picking. If we can go in there and control the ball and clock and keep our pathetic D off the field as much as possible, we have a chance.

You are correct! RUN, RUN, Run the ball, Run Portis, Run Betts, Run the Rock, Run Dancer, Prancer, Donner and Blitzen. Control the clock. Take oppurtunity away from them. Keep there damn offense on the bench.

Re: Run the damn football!
I kind of agree with you. However, let's say they can run the football on the Colts. I assume they can. The big problem is gonna be that they can't cover Harrison and Wayne OR stop Rhodes and Addai. So, then you have to go to the pass at some point. Where are they then?
If we can establish the run and grind out the clock, it will keep Manning and company off the field most of the game.

Re: Run the damn football!

yeah it sounds good in theory. Keep the Colts O off the Feild. Control the clock, yeah all that. Please keep in mind that our secondary couldn't cover a table with a table cloth! It won't take Peyton & Marvin or Reggie long to hook up for the big one! HAIL From MCUSA!

Re: Run the damn football!

I went back and looked at the play by play in the 2nd half. I can honestly say they tried to get something going running the ball. However when you run the ball on 1st down and get 1 or 2 yards all the time you put yourself in a bad spot. So I think they were ineffective running the ball in the second half. Are we supposed to run the ball 3rd and long? Brunell didn't help by not extending any drives. Al is a smart guy but I think alot of this is second guessing. As a whole everyone is just p'd.

CP has had some successes on 3rd and long draw plays, where the defense is way off the ball (Rogers-like) and spread out expecting the pass...

of course this only works if they believe Brunell is willing to throw the ball anywhere on the field and not his usual spots. so much of an offense is hinged on the QB representing an actual threat the few times we need him to throw. unfortunately that's clearly not the case here.
