Re: Fassel meets with Redskins over coaching vacancies
Agreed, and just to piggy-back, the players here are DYING for some stability. Jason Campbell has been in Al Saunders' system for two years, it's the first time he's been in a system for more than one year since he got to college. Now we might switch it up on him again?
The players have been begging to keep things the same. As soon as you get something going, 9-7 behind a late-season surge of great play, you tear it all down. It's demoralizing. The players get no sense of accomplishment, they spend the primes of their careers building something that ends up getting scrapped and rebuilt again. We've got solid players, but players go hand-in-hand with scheme. If our owner doesn't hire GW, he's an ass.
Good post. I can hear Giants fans laughing already. I can't believe DS is even considering this. |

You mean Giants + Cowboys + Eagles. |
Re: Fassel meets with Redskins over coaching vacancies
This really sucks, someone please send tapes of Fassel's B-more offense to Snyder so he can see exactly what happened while he was there. Seriously B-more's offense was so inept under Fassel it was pathetic. That and he wasn't anything special as a head coach either, Dan Snyder must not really care if we go 4-12. If he actually does hire Fassel it will basically confirm that we are not gonna change until either Snyder or Cerrato leaves this team.

Re: Fassel meets with Redskins over coaching vacancies
So what's so different about us? We were dominant at the end of the season, right? We were a playoff team, right?
I'm not trumpeting the Jim Fassel horn, but if he's the guy it's not all of the sudden we're back to the drawing board and rebuilding from scratch.
Our situation is different from the perspective that our team at the end of this season was not as dominant as at least SD last season. Sorry if that rubs anyone the wrong way, but SD, and even Dallas to a greater degree than D.C., had a much better roster, better record, possibly better coached, and most likely a better front office for someone to take the reigns of. I could not disagree with you more in regards to "...back to the drawing board and rebuilding from scratch" if Fassel is hired. The players will revolt, the assistant coaches will depart, and what is left? Going back to the drawing board and rebuilding from scratch. |

Schneed, nice post - I think what people have to consider with Dan Synder is that his decisions are first and foremost made due to monetary considerations above all else. Bringing in a new coaching regime is all about marketing to Synder - retaining Gregg Williams or promoting from within would probably result in better on field results, but this is boring and does not create the "buzz" that a new big name coach can. Just like signing big name free agents, constant turnover is part of Dan Synder's marketing scheme.
Nothing sells more and markets better than winning. Winning playoff games and winning Super Bowls markets better than changing Coaches and being mediocre. The Patriots are proof of that. The TV commercial ad time during the New York Giants vs New England Patriots regular season finale was the highest ever for a regular season game. The 30 second commercials were selling for close to Superbowl money. |

Please tell that to Dan Snyder, he's perfectly happy hiring idiot coaches and making money off the fans anyways, no matter how shitty the product on the field is he knows the fans will always support the team and buy everything up regarding the team. |

It would take a huge price increase or talent decrease to get me to stop paying for tickets to games. |

It really is but do you think things will change? Most of the fans that are on the internet and are saying they are gonna stop buying everything up only represent a small portion of the fanbase. Honestly I wish the fans would change and say, hey you know what Jim Fassel is an idiot hire, we don't like that so we aren't gonna support the team and buy shit up like we used to until you grow some smarts and do the right thing regardless of whether or not you like the man, but that might not happen. I hope it happens but i'm not holding my breath. Until fans stop buying everything Dan Snyder sells and his marketing isn't working anymore he's not gonna change. |
Re: Fassel meets with Redskins over coaching vacancies
OK people, chill on the Dan Snyder just wants to make money conspiracy theory. He's not effing around with coaches and free agents just to make more money. The answer is much more simple than that: he just doesn't understand football well enough.
He brought Gibbs in and gave him total control over personnel decisions. Two out of those four years, Gibbs took a very low-key approach to free agency. And during those years, we didn't have any coaching turnover. Amazingly, despite the relative stability, the team made a boatload of money! Change does not lead to more revenue. Marketing (extremeskins, alternate uniforms, expanding the stadium, Redskins Radio, etcetera) makes more money. He's not thinking of bringing in Fassel to make more money. He's considering Fassel because he feels it's possible he'll be a better HC than GW. He's in it to win it. If he picks Fassel, it shows he has no clue. If he picks GW, it shows that he's learning. |

Mooby - unfortunately even if fans stopped going to games it would take many years for the season ticket contracts to expire before a "fan revolt" could take effect. I believe all Redskin season tickets have 5 year contracts on them, so fans could just not give up tickets next year in response to Synders decision making or lack thereof. |
Re: Fassel meets with Redskins over coaching vacancies
If there's ONE thing you can't criticize Dan Snyder, it's for trying to win. He tries. Hard. He'll shell out huge signing bonuses to get any player, he'll go more cash over cap than any owner in the league, he'll shatter the league's salary structure just to sign a key assistant coach, and he'll fly to any city at 12:01 am on the first day of free agency to land a key free agent.
He always TRIES. The effort cannot be questioned. The decision-making is where he deserves scrutiny. He rightly allowed Gibbs to call the shots, and consequently we've begun building something. Now the question is whether he's just going back to his old ways. |

Re: Fassel meets with Redskins over coaching vacancies
Take a deep breath here folks.
Danny Boy has succeeded in creating a media frenzy about his new head coach. That focuses the spotlight on him and what he's doing/thinking/saying/not saying... And that's what this kind of thing is all about for him. There has to be "sizzle" associated with all of this. If he can hire a "sizzling" - read "surprising" - HC, that's fine. If not, he has to manufacture "sizzle" and that's what he's done. Someone asked why the media don't take him on. Well, the local media doesn't dare do that because he'll take vengeance on them. One reporter for a local TV station was banned from using the indoor studio facilities at Redskins HQS for a year and had to do all of his reports from the parking lot. That kind of set the tone for local guys being nasty to Danny Boy. As for the national media, they don't call BS on Danny Boy much anymore because it isn't all that newsworthy anymore. As long as people are talking about this coaching search, that's good from Danny Boy's point of view. So keep it up folks. Smootsmack gets angry with me when I say nasty things about Danny Boy and his need to have his ego stroked. This thread sounds to me a bit as if some others here are also thinking that Danny Boy and Vinnie are not certified football geniuses. Welcome to the dark side, folks. For those who really think Jim Fassel is a bad idea for this team, take solace. There are plenty of worse candidates out there without coaching jobs. I don't think Fassel would be a great hire, but he's not nearly as bad a choice as some others would be. |
Re: Fassel meets with Redskins over coaching vacancies
has this been verified? or just another one of the dumb rumors out there? remember how bad the giants offense was when Fassel was there? it down right stank. and Tiki Barber became an all pro AFTER Fassel left. just say no to J.F.
