The committee ruled Poston be suspended over a contract extension that free agent LB LaVar Arrington (Redskins) signed with the Washington Redskins in December of 2003. Seahawks | Hutchinson's fate delayed
Fri, 17 Mar 2006 13:34:00 -0800 Gregg Bell, of the Associated Press, reports the future fate of Seattle Seahawks transition free agent OG Steve Hutchinson will be decided by an arbitration process. That will delay the Sunday deadline, March 19, for the team to match an offer to Hutchinson by the Minnesota Vikings. The NFL Players Association said Friday, March 17, that the league has filed a claim on behalf of the Seahawks contending a clause in the offer sheet Hutchinson signed with the Vikings last weekend circumvents the league's labor contract. The clause in question would guarantee Hutchinson the entire contract sum if Hutchinson is not the team's highest-paid offensive lineman. NFL spokesman Michael Signora confirmed that the NFL had filed the case. Richard Berthelsen, general counsel for the NFLPA, said the union will argue against the Seahawks' and league's claims. "They say the clause circumvents our collective bargaining agreement. It is our belief that it does not," Berthelsen said. Berthelsen said the union's interpretation of the issue is that the clause is permitted by the CBA because it is a "principal term" of the agreement. the seahawks could lose this, big time. |

Falcons | Team reaches agreement with Abraham; still need to work out a trade

The next step: Reaching a trade agreement with the Jets on appropriate compensation for the standout defensive player. "We're very comfortable with where we are at (with Abraham), and we think he is comfortable, too," one Falcons official said. "We've got a (contract) deal in place with him. Now we've got to deal with (the Jets)." The addition of QB Patrick Ramsey by the Jets may have been a sign that the Jets are now convinced they won't be able to pry QB Matt Schaub away from the Falcons in an Abraham deal. |

Jets | Abraham headed to Seattle?
Fri, 17 Mar 2006 14:15:45 -0800 Adam Schefter, of NFL.com, reports there is speculation the New York Jets have traded DE John Abraham to the Seattle Seahawks for the 31st selection in the upcoming NFL Draft. The deal would be contingent on the Seahawks being able to sign him to a long-term deal. "There is certainly no urgency to deal Abraham now. As noted earlier, the Falcons have agreed to a new contract with Abraham and the Seahawks have reached a trade agreement with the Jets. That leaves those two teams with half of the equation to acquire Abraham complete." |

The contract can be worth as much as $25 million if Owens plays through the deal and Dallas opts to pay him pricey roster bonuses in the springs of 2007 and 2008. Owens will earn a bonus of $5 million for this season and a base salary of $5 million, for total compensation of $10 million. Dallas must then pay Owens a roster bonus of $3 million in March 2007 to retain him for that season, at a base salary of $5 million. There is another roster bonus of $3 million due in March 2008, and Owens has a base salary of $4 million for that year. Cowboys | Seven teams after Owens Sat, 18 Mar 2006 12:59:00 -0800 Agent Drew Rosenhaus said seven teams were after WR Terrell Owens and willing to pay him top dollar before he signed with the Dallas Cowboys. Re: Official NFL Free Agent Signings Thread
News has leaked out in Minnesota that the Vikings will be wearing purple pants to go with their purple home jerseys in some games this season. No truth to the rumor that the "Barney the dinosaur" theme song will accompany the team's pregame introductions.
someone asked about it, there's your info... purple pants, oOOOOOO. |

Falcons | Abraham intent on playing in Atlanta
Sun, 19 Mar 2006 19:34:46 -0800 Steve Wyche, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports New York Jets franchise free agent DE John Abraham is intent on playing for the Atlanta Falcons, his agent, Tony Agnone, confirmed Sunday, March 19. The contract agreement he reached Friday, March 17, with Atlanta and his word are his bond. The Jets have thwarted Abraham's relocation by treating the Falcons' trade offer of a second-round draft pick as insufficient. Instead, the Jets have agreed to trade him to the Seattle Seahawks for a first-round draft choice, and that decision has left Abraham "not happy," according to Agnone. In a brief e-mail to the Journal-Constitution, Agnone said there had been no developments in the saga over the weekend. Though things were quiet over the weekend, the Falcons confirmed talks are expected to resume as soon as Monday, March 20. Vikings | Carter says Vikings made a mistake trading Culpepper Sun, 19 Mar 2006 20:56:40 -0800 Harvey Fialkov, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports former Minnesota Vikings WR Cris Carter, now an analyst on HBO's Inside the NFL, believes the Vikings made a drastic mistake in trading QB Daunte Culpepper while he is in his prime. "You don't trade franchise quarterbacks," Carter said during an interview on Sirius NFL radio. "The reason we have jobs is because guys in executive positions make decisions on quarterbacks. Because every week, what do we talk about on Monday?" Seahawks | Jones reworks contract
Mon, 20 Mar 2006 11:51:41 -0800 Mike Sando, of the Tacoma News Tribune, reports Seattle Seahawks OLT Walter Jones has reworked his contract with the team so his average per year drops below the $7 million average OLG Steve Hutchinson's offer sheet with the Minnesota Vikings averages. It is believed Jones added another year to his contract with a base salary of $1 million. The extra year will void in the end, but it drops his yearly contract average. The team converted his 2006 roster bonus of $2 million into a signing bonus. looks like the hawks have learned some tricks of their own ;) |

NFL | Rice not interested in becoming NFL commissioner; at least for now
Mon, 20 Mar 2006 14:25:59 -0800 The Associated Press reports secretary of state Condoleezza Rice is not applying for the newly opened post of NFL commissioner - not now, anyhow, her spokesman said carefully Monday, March 20. Rice is enjoying being secretary of state "at the moment," spokesman Sean McCormack said. The wiggle-room in his response after NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced he would retire resonated off frequent only half-joking statements by Rice that as a lifelong football fan she aspires to run the league one day. New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft seems to be in Rice's corner for the football post. and he probably turned down because A) Her current job is considered more important, and B) she wouldn't have gotten the job. |

Mon, 20 Mar 2006 18:06:05 -0800 Vikings.com reports free agent FB Tony Richardson (Chiefs) said he has a contract offer on the table from the Minnesota Vikings. "One thing I asked was to be able to go home and absorb everything. He said he has interest from other teams, but he has not made any other visits. |
