Why minus the throw to Cooley? Did that not count or something? How about adding the potential yardage he lost when Cooley dropped that ball?

I don't understand why people always want to subtract plays out, I read an article this morning about how Portis ran 22 times for 46 yards (minus the 38 yard TD run). Why is it ok to analyze a performance by subtracting out big plays?? Why do they count any less?

Rant over.
While i agree with your point...can't subract or add for point purposes..I think his (repeat HIS-not mine) point was, it was a dink toss to cooley with no chance of actually scoring- and was, for all intents and purposes, a stat padding play. Kinda like A-rod hitting 3 homers and batting in 8 runs, and the yanks (i hate them) win 12-0 and then striking out with the game on the line. The point is, there is such a thing as stat padding, and is does matter the circumstances of the play. That said, i wouldnt' take anything away from brunell on sunday...my point remains, he looked good in the first half, and ok in the second. I would argue that this is also as good as it gets for Mark, and therefore, I'm not sure how many more miracles we have in us to win...bc alone, it wasn't enough to pull out the W.
aw hell i spoke too soon. GTripp thinks Brunell plays this "good" practically every week. well you're wrong, regardless of the stats you have on your calculator, Brunell didn't rely on YAC and short yardage dinks to get him some decent stats *this* game.
But your "best" point before was that MB wasn't getting it done at 2-5. It's obvious that teams lose football games, not QBs. It doesn't take a whole lot of thought to come to that conclusion.

The gameplan was quite obviously different this game then the other games. It called for MB to throw down the middle a whole lot more. And it was just as effective, if not a bit more than Al's other gameplans (possibly because Gibbs had imput). We moved the ball, a lot. We didn't turn it over minus that one fumble. We didn't throw all that much and his normal stats are pedistrian. A futher investigation shows that he was quite effieient.

So yeah, everyone is right. Brunell isn't the reason we won. He also hasn't been the reason we have been losing. His numbers have been consistent between the wins and losses, minus the first Dallas game in which they were horrible.

Obviously, if we had lost on Vandy's FG, Brunell bashing would be rampant right now. I think a lot of others have reached this conclusion This goes back to MHeisig's point from last week. Fans, in general, are fickle. Note how Brunell didn't see the field between Novak's missed first FG and the end of the game. But that sequence of events determined what the fans thought of Brunell's performance.

A microchosm of Brunell's entire season. It can be quite easily proven that his performance has remained relatively steady. I hope you don't challenge me to do so, but I warn you that I'm ready.

I just think it seems to be a case of the bar was sooo low that an average (below average) NFL QB performance is praised "Amazing". Kinda like a dog that soils the kitchen floor as opposed to the carpet, its an improvement, but its not really good. Now imagine the dog is 38...

call it what you want, but please don't pretend it was anything more than ok. 1 td and less than 200 yards. fine stats if you are trent dilfer with the ravens D and jamal lewis running for 100+ a game. but lets be reasonable.

Re: sick of "bashers": without people willing to take the other side, this forum would be quite uneventful.

Certainly not coach Gibbs. Certainly not his supporters. Certainly not objective observers. So I find it funny that the bashers, who spend so much of their time lowering the bar on Brunell, actually find it offensive that he outperformed the low bar!

It wasn't an amazing performance. Al and Joe decided they were going to take more risks offensively. Brunell went out and executed. Just another day at the office.

I'd really like to see this...I honestly see him as nothing more than a below average QB, who while not completely at fault by any means (D, O-line, whole team) led his team to a 3-5 record. I would love to be a believer...

No, he didn't, and that's why I said so in my initial post.

While I agree that Brunell didn't play like a pro bowler or necessarily a "field general" to say his performance was sub-par is equally incorrect.

steadily what? pedestrian? 'efficient'? does it make any difference at all in HOW he got those stats - deeper, and over the middle - to the result of the game? does emotion factor at all in your precious stats, because i can assure you it does in a football game.

yeah brunell was decent at best. most of the first quarter receptions came from pass interference calls. its hard to say as im boasting about the victory last night but the cowboys really did beat themselves. but guys i must say im proud of all of you. we did have a great win last night and not many of you are saying "oh were back in this race". we have a lot of work to do. and you all seem to get that.....sweet, i finally found a place where i can talk to real skins fans that arent totally crazy.....

I was feeling that same way in 2004 when Brunell was being called everything except what his mother named him. Sometime during that period I felt sort of out of place being only one of the few who supported him. Compare what was being said about him then, with what's being said about him now from basically the same people. I have come to the conclusion that for Brunell, his situation is going to go back and forth, week after week depending on whether the team wins or looses, It's just that simple. The fact we won ten games and made the playoffs last year with Brunell still dosen't make up for/or off-set some of the things that were said about the man, and "You heard it right here".

Re: Give Props to Brunell

It was a great win but lets be serious about Brunell play he should have had aleast 3 to 4 interceptions. Brunell was very lucky that dallas couldnt catch those passes. As a veteran Brunell has to be smarter with the ball or it will come back and bite us. Its true that Cooley drop a perfect ball from Brunell, but Cooley saved his ass on that lob in the corner of the endzone, Brunell was late with that pass. In the first quarter when we were up 2-0 it was 3rd and 2 Brunell could have ran for the first down but instead threw the ball in the endzone lucky for us Henry drop the ball. Brunell has 191 yrds but 28 yard came on the last play of the first half on a dump off pass. Also in the second quarter when he threw the ball to Lloyd the ball was short Lloyd had to come back and get the ball because it was way undertrown. Brunell does not have the arm strengh to the ball downfield. One other point about Brunell the man has to start stepping up in the god d--n pocket so Samuels and Jansen arnt always hung out to dry. They are pushing the rushers up field but Brunell instead of stepping up in the pocket just keeps backing up and up. A great win love beating those fing cowgirls, but lets dont go overboard with Brunell he played a average game at best. Hail to the skins lets kick the eagles asses.

Re: Give Props to Brunell

Also if people think Brunell played a great game, that means our standards for quarterback play is really low. We should expect better from a veteran. One other point to get the ball down field over 30 yards the skins had to have Randel el throw the damn ball because Brunell can throw it that far.

Re: Give Props to Brunell

If there was one game not to hate on Brunell, this most definitly was it.

He found his moss-less receiving corps when we needed it. He moved the ball and scored 22 points on a decent Dallas defense.

QB is such a passionate subject for many... lets take a break for a week honestly. Campbell would have stepped in, gotten confused, and threw some costly INT's... and with the way our defense is playing... that would lose us the game. I know that's an assumption... but assuming a QB that's never played a snap in the NFL will throw picks isn't absurd by any means.

Gibbs won't give up on the season just yet. We're 1 game out of a wild card spot, and this is usually the point in the season when the redskins show up to play.

Take it easy folks.

CHIEF CHUCKING MY SPEAR 11-06-2006 11:22 PM

Re: Give Props to Brunell

No hate here on Brunell just giving the facts. Sometime the truth hurts. He completed what like 6 passes to his WR. Other teams miss their best Wr and still do well. We will be seeing on this sunday Mcnabb has miss Stallworth for most of the season and still hit his Wr more than 6 times a game. The skins score 20 on offense not 22. 2 came on a safety.

Well I'll just repeat yet again what I and others have said here. If you want to count near INTs you have to count dropped passes by our receivers throughout the course of the year. If you want to take away yards then why heck why don't we just say sure Riggins had 166 yards rushing on 38 carries for an average of 4.4 yards per carry, but take away that 43 yard run and all he's averaging is 3.3 ypc. Brunell had some crips passes to Thrash over the middle Sunday also.

But then again, you're the same guy who said we'll never win so long as Snyder is the owner anyway so what does it matter who is the QB?

14/23 192YDS 1-TD

I can't argue with you, sometimes the truth does hurt. If you want to compare Brunell with Mcnabb, then go right ahead. Totally different teams, totally different scenarios. By no means do I think Brunell is a glorious defender of the elite, supreme in all of his duties, crusher of the weak, etc...

He is however, the best chance one game at a time. For each game that we win, each game that we advance... Brunell is the best chance. Period. There is not an option to start thinking "long term" untill we're eliminated from contention, and I don't disagree with that philosophy at all. What if we just "gave up" last year at 5-6...

Let's be real, understand the situation, and stop all the bitching. His stats aren't bad (but I don't mean to use them as leverage, interpret them as you wish), he makes plays when we need them, and he's our best chance to win.

Yes im the same guy who been telling it like it is since april when i said this team is not built to win a championship. The way little Danny runs this team will never will a Super Bowl and that pains me to say that. How many times are we going to blow off the draft and just keep trying to do things by the FA route. Trading away picks like it doesnt matter espcially on Duckett, a third rounder cant get him on the field on short yardage, what a waste of a pick on someone who wont be here next year. Look hoe Dallas has rebuilt their Dline and LB threw the draft, unfortually they will get better. Ours wont unless we overspend in April like we always do for help. HMM let see Dallas bench Bleadsoe for Romo boy that looks like a bad move huh. Romo was a FA how many picks did that cost the cowboys or signing bonues??? We over spent on Campbell when he was projected as a 2 rounder at best or a late 3 rounder but no we had to give up 2 number ones and a second round pick too. How about this year trading a extra second for Rocky when he cant even get on the field unless it special teams. Giving up a third and a fourth rounders for LLoyd when the Eagels get stallworht for a 5 rounder i think and a LB. I could go on and on but you just keep drinking the koolaid and never question the moves this team makes. The so call front office is a joke{VINNY<GIBBS>LITTLE DANNY} We need a real football man to run this team not some fantasy football wantabe. I agree with alot of your post. In no way do I think this is a championship team right now. If I was in vegas, I would not bet the redskins to win it all this year. Right now our offseason philosophy needs to change, and I think we can all pretty much remain in a consensus on that one.

I don't know if your referring to me, but I'm not quite sure what you mean by being a "yes" man for the skins.

In my previous posts I'm talking about coaching philosophy. You play your players that give you the best chance to win each game, one game at a time, especially at this point in the season. That's how you have to play it. It has nothing to do with our past offseason woes, its right here, right now.

No im not talking about you. I'm with you on taking it on one game at a time. Play to win now that fine but another loss or two, we have to find out if Campbell can play. We better pray that he can or were done for. Listen my hearts says were going win 7 of the last eight, because that what i want. But my head telling me its not going to happen and im piss at how this team is built like crap every year.

Paragraph breaks are your friend.

If you get a thrill calling me and others yes men go right ahead, I don't care. All I know is we've made some very good moves. We don't know what's going to happen with Duckett so we can't say "oh well he's gone anyway" Just because Campbell and Rocky aren't starting right now doesn't mean long term they're going to fail.

I would say I didn't want Rocky in the first place. I didn't think we needed another linebacker with that pick. I would have gone with a DT. Campbell looks like he's going to be great but we gave up probably one too many picks for him. I didn't like the Archuleta signing from the get go (though I didn't think he'd be this bad) and I wasn't happy that they let Omar Stoutmire go.

Thing is since you and others love to bash every single move and ignore the good ones. I choose to just ignore the bad one and focus on the good ones. If you're going to go 100% one way I'll go 100% the other way.

But like I said, if you want to think I'm just a yes man go right ahead. And if you don't think we'll ever win anyway why should you even care about the team?

The thing about Brunell believe it or not i want him to succeed. But he has to be smarter with the ball not just throwing it up for grab like he did on sunday or against the titan when we had a minute to go. Against dallas on the goal line when we were in FG range throwing the interception to williams. Against TB in the playoffs when we're running out the clock and he throw the interception across his body and across the field. As a vet i expect him to be smarter than the way he plays sometime. Cant he run for a first down once in a while instead of throwing ball away or maybe step up in the pocket like NFL QB does instead of backing up and throwing or rolling into a sack that all.,

I think the assumption that he doesn't throw deep has some legitimacy towards it. I think it was my homie tafkas that released the deep ball spread sheet, I'll look for it in a second.

He is however looking better as of late. That extra weak of rest definitly helped him out. He doesn't play well injured ever, and I think he's looking pretty sharp now.

From what I've seen of Campbell in college and in the preseason games I just really like the fact that each time I see him getting better. I think he picks up on his mistakes and works on them. A lot of guys plateau early, I think JC has a huge growth curve.

One last thing then i have to go to bed. What has Little Danny done really to show there light at the end of the tunnell. He fooled me and us in 2000, fired a good coach in 2001 and hired the ball coach and didnt give him a gm. We all love Gibbs but i hate seeing his legacy go down with this terd. Unfortually Gibbs has got caught up in this spending frenzy and its going to kill us. I expected more from Gibbs on the FA. That why until Danny get a real football man we wont be able to win. As a smart business man you would think that Little Danny would figure that out by now. But hey he keeps making money so i guess that matter more than Championships. I've been fooled by the skins in FA since it started. I'm in the show me mode now prove me wrong please. Hail to the skins

Brunell did his job - plain and simple. Didn't play outstanding but better than past weeks.

Key is that we won, that's all that matters to me.

I'm not even lying, I have dreams at night that Brunell gets hurt and JC comes in and plays like Manning. I'm going to bed right now, where my after midnight redskins are undefeated and have won 10 superbowls.

All love.

At some point people have to look past 2000. Yeah it was a disaster but the moves we have made now have not been for stars in the twilight of their careers. There's a lot more to the Marty story but no need to really go into it here. The ball coach era was just a cluster fuck all around behind the scenes.

Snyder does have football men running the organization. You can argue that he doesn't have the right ones but he has them.

Enough with living in the past, my god.

Some people can't even let go of Shuler and Howard... give me a break.

i'd argue that vinny is not a football man. he may not be running things, but i'd be much happier without him.

He's much more of a football man than any of our self proclaimed football men here on the boards that's for sure.

Gibbs addressed this yesterday in his press conference and he said he feels this is the right front office setup and it works for them.

As the great Jim Mora once said:

"You don't know. You just don't know. You may think you know, but you don't know. And you never will."

I think this applies pretty well to the constant armchair coaching/GM'ing around here.

This year his numbers have been stellar. People have made excuses for his numbers, usually fairly subjective reasoning, but then act like these excuses completely dismiss his numbers. while i am aware that Brunell's completion percentage is up yoy, I admit to not knowing the exact numbers associated with an increase in Yards per attempt. I would love to see them. I would suspect that if you were to look at his passes, most would be in the under 10 yards range- with significant yards coming from his recievers gaining YAC. I would not take anything away from Brunell for such plays- as getting the ball to the open man 5 yards away who runs for 20 there after is just as important as tossing for 25. I cannot however, agree that Mark Brunell's numbers have been stellar. What is the basis for comparison? I would argue that you should compare him to other QBs in the league (more specifically- those that aren't in danger of losing their jobs- ie winning). (i have a feeling some will tout the numbers of plummer and mcnair as comparisions- fair enough- but we don't have anyhting close to Broncos or Raven's D). That said, it is entirely possible that we just disagree on the definition of stellar.

Re: Give Props to Brunell

Brunell was adequate. He made a few passes, and of course, gave the Cowboys a turnover on the botched snap.

What scared me is that, on the Redskins' last drive, when we were setting up for the field goal kick that Novak missed, Brunell snapped the ball with 12 or 13 seconds left on the 25-second clock instead of letting it go to 1 second and leaving the Cowboys with less time. That pass to Witten never would have happened if Brunell had used up that extra time.

According to Al Saunders on Comcast last night MB is having his best season ever. I almost fell out of my chair laughing.

Tripp, it's been explained ad infinitum. it's YAC - that's a stat, so start doing some serious subtraction. maybe if Distance Thrown was a stat, you would pay attention. maybe if stats only applied when In Contention (and not garbage time) you would stop basing Brunell's HOF application based on his 'stellar' numbers.

beware the number crunchers.
