the redskins dont play cover 2. landry will be play more to the line of scrimmage and taylor will play centerfield. one of his weaknesses is his hands hopefully he doesnt play like carlos rogers. our pressure is going to have to come the lb's and safeties so it might be the same defense from last year. i dont dislike the pick we took the best defense player on the board in opinion only time will tell.

How so? Quinn was a steal for a team SELECTING that late, but they got totally corn-holed by the Cowboys for him.

Hey if you're the Raiders do you take Greg Olsen to help out as a safety valve for your new QB or do you protect him with an OL like Arron Sears?

Re: The Official 2007 Draft Discussion Thread

From ESPN Insider

6. Washington Redskins
The pick: LaRon Landry, S, LSU
Scouts take: It's impossible to say whether or not this is the perfect move for Washington at this point because the Redskins have so few picks and no one knows exactly what transpired in terms of trade offers leading up to the pick. If they weren't offered quality value for the pick, then taking Landry is an excellent move. Though the Redskins have more pressing needs than safety, it is a need and there's nothing Landry can't do. He is a tough run defender who takes the shortest path to the ball and delivers big hits. He times hits well and punishes receivers that go over the middle. He can cover the deep half of the field and can match up with slot receivers.

One area of concern is his ability to play the ball when it's in the air, but he has adequate ball skills and he should benefit from lining up next to Sean Taylor. Taylor's excellent range and ability to play a center fielder-type role will help protect Landry. Finally, having such talented safeties gives the Redskins more freedom in terms of mixing as well as hiding coverages and helps the pass rush out by forcing quarterbacks to hold on to the ball longer.

Next years draft class looks to be a good one. Dallas is trading up to get second round talent at a first round price. Of course they'll have a top 15 pick next year.

1- Don't count out Cleveland for a turn around. They got Steinbach and Lewis, and now they have a very good tackle, and a franchise qb. They already made huge strides on D last year, and they have some viable weapons on offense.

2- What happened to Alan Branch? i don't even see him on Kiper's overall draft board. I thought he was supposed to be a top 15 pick, now it's looking like he's a 3rd round pick?

3- Cowboys suck. Nuff said.

Too late. ARZ selected Branch, first pick in the second. I'm not sure why he slid this far. The injury (fractured shins) weren't cited or confirmed and it's hard that the experts judged him on lack of productivity and laziness when he singlehandedly anchored NCAAs best defense! I mean look at how he boosted productivity for his teammates Leon Hall 3 INTs 15 PBUs 45 tackles and Lamar Woodley 12 sacks 36 tackles 16.5 TFLs.

We NEED a d line. He is another hard hitting safety. How is it we were all thrilled to get Adam Archuletta at first, then we were all thrilled to get rid of him when he didn't fit into our system? But now we went out and DRAFTED someone cut from a similar mold as AA???? That doesn't sound a little looney to you? We were better off drafting a Leon Hall type player and letting Springs play safety.
It kinda does hurt us considering YET A-FREAKIN-GAIN we will have NO pass rush. I don't know about you, that is pissing me off. How many years do we have to suffer with no pass rush before we learn. Williams can only disguise so many blitzes, and send the farm so many times. We saw how well that worked out last year.

well first of all you dont think we need a safety donkey? come on man thats totally rediculous, you are the same fan who like the redskins but knows nothing about what is really going on in football buddy. and yes you dummy we dont have anthing but a 6th pick (not a 5th pal). but if you look at almost all these traded they include shit from next year....which we have all seven right now, we dont need that many hahah shit i would trade all our picks the following year every year to get better picks in the year of the draft becasue the only time that will only haert you is the final year of the nfl's life....so jsarno please dont question my expertice in this field ya donkey cause you could never match witts with me the effing draft and personnel KING!!!!!!!!

Not to split hairs, but Greg Williams' defense is based on Cover 2 / Tampa 2 with some wrinkles thrown in. GW likes to bring pressure from the LBs and Corners, which leaves the Safties spliting the field in Cover 2. Cover 2 is not effective with a run-stopping, blitzing SS, look at how bad Arch and our pass coverage was last year.

Landry is known as a better coverage guy and he should create the mismatches Williams envisioned with Archuletta.

Don't rule out Fletcher making our defense more stout against the run and commanding it the way Pierce did. I think you are going to see a big time improvement immediately.

Re: The Official 2007 Draft Discussion Thread

Let's not compare Landry to Archuleta. Landry is the real deal. Not only does he rock ballcarriers silly, he's has the football smarts to go with it. And Sean Taylor doesn't get beat often. As a matter of fact, he seemingly had a better season alongside Ryan Clark and Vernon Fox (guys who he trusted to know their own assignment). The greatest thing is that now we have some stability and not a roundabout Stoutmire, Prioleau gig.

I agree they do. Anderson would still be a starter for us, and I beleive Okoye would be too. I'm not saying Landry is a poor player...I just see AA all over again. Picking a run stopping safety when we needed a pass defending safety is not the wisest of things to do IMO. There is obviously nothing I can do about the fact that we picked Landry, except HOPE that we can turn him into what we need.
Rest assured Snyder will bolster the DL and LB corps before long. Any doubters?
I do doubt that. He already brought in Fletcher, our cap numbers are very stingy right now, and who all is left in FA anyway? Our LB's are set. Maybe there will be a cap casualty later and we'll pick up a DE, but I am not holding my breathe, and I am not sure we'll have the space under the cap.
