Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
I'm racking my brain trying to come up with any HC that was never any higher than QB coach at the professional level, and never any higher than OC on the college level. If you have some, I'd love to hear who they are, cause this seems almost unprecidented.
Andy Reid, discussed earlier in the thread.
Not true...he was asst. head coach before he got the HC position.
But what's in a title? Don't know how his duties compared to Zorn's in Seattle. Plus, how many "assistant head coaches" did the Skins have last year? At least three, including Bugel. |
Andy Reid, discussed earlier in the thread.
You are incorrect sir. Please see my other posts, he was qb coach AND asst. head coach before he took over in Philly. Zorn was just a QB coach. While Reid comes the closest, it's not the same. |

They actually groomed Reid, Zorn has not been groomed. |

herm edwerds also went from defensive backs coach to head coach, but he also held the title of ass. headcoach while he was defensive backs coach. |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
A head coach is only as good as the coaches and players that surround him. He's got Buges, Byner, Blache and Grey. And doesn't Danny Smith return too? Plus some solid vets in the locker room. It's not all on the HC. Let's remember that. I don't like the hire but I think we'll be fine.

What makes you think he wasn't groomed just because he didn't have the title? |

Too funny. I actually feel a little sorry for JF right about now. DS is probably not on his xmas card list. |
I'll bet they made him take showers at least once a day! :)
LOL. I was all for him being OC...he deserved the shot, but it's not like he was the QB coach of Peyton Manning or anything. About herm edwards, I'm not sure I want Zorn if he does what Edwards has done in his career. (39-41 with Jets, 13-19 in KC). Sure, Edwards and Reid come close, but are there any other guys that did it like Zorn that we can compare, or are we blazing our own path with Zorn? Again, not saying Zorn is going to fail, I am obviously pulling for him, just curious if anyone blazed this path before him. |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
Who is our new OC then?
|
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
What makes you think he wasn't groomed just because he didn't have the title?
Well, considering he was a QB (9 seasons), then a QB coach for both the Lions and Seattle (10 seasons), and was inducted into the Seahawks ring of Honor in 91 (meaning he was highly respected), and he never got the title or moved up, I'd say he wasn't groomed. Why would you think for a second he was groomed? |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
I really don't know what to think about this. On one hand i'm kinda excited and ready to move on. I really don't know anything about Zorn other than people saying he's pretty sharp. Then again alot of NFL position coaches are sharp, smart, prepared but that doesn't make them coaching material.
It really makes me think our organization is a clumsy as it's made out to be. It makes me think they didn't have a "list" of potential candidates ready (which they should have) prior to JG's stepping down. It took over 30 days and they go w/ someone they originally hired as an oc. Our FO wasn't prepared. That being said maybe we wound up w/ the right guy. Hopefully our FO will be smart and try to build a good team. |

I like this hire. Thankfully we will have a coach who brings a fresh perspective to the job, and not some recycled has been!

In fact, he probably wasn't since he wasn't promised anything after Holmgren retires (which is why we got him in the first place), but I do remember reading that he was very involved in the game planning and play designs for the Seahawks offense. And I'm just saying the assistant head coach title may have been largely ceremonial for Reid |

It's possible. Putting Reid aside, who else has done this like Zorn? I know you have an encyclopedia or something with info like this. |

all you have to do is go one page back to see we already talked about herm edwards was an asst. coach as well before, very similar to reid. So unless someone wants to mention reid or edwards again, who else? |

I'd approve of the move if they had hired Kermit the Frog at this point. I'm just grateful that we finally have a coach so the Warpath can start having intelligent conversations again.

They were 9-7 before he got there. His first year (2001) they were 10-6, next year they were 10-6, 2003 the were 6-10, 2004 they were 10-6, and his final year they were 4-12. 3 trips to the playoffs in 5 years. In KC he's been 9-7 & 4-12. I wouldn't complain with three trips to the playoffs in the next five years. He was however, the DB coach & assistant HC in TB. |

I hope there will be enough Zorn to go around, he does have a full plate. It will be of key importance to get a couple coaching positions filled with guys that he wants to bring in that he has trust in OC/AOC, and I'm sure now a QB coach that hes worked with to help make this big transition as smooth as possible. |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
I have a feeling that one day Garret vs Zorn is going to be a great rivalry. Hope I'm half-right.

What are you talking about? |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
What a strange path to hiring a HC. That said, Holmgren's assistants have done very well as head coaches (Reid, Gruden, and Mariuchi), so I'm optimistic that Zorn will do well. Jason Campbell's development must be his top priority.
|
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
I think, (and I know a lot of people will disagree with this, and thats fine), that if we were OK with Zorn as the O.C., then we by neccessity have to be ok with this promotion. His role isn't going to be all that much different, and we were already talking about how the coordinators were going to overshadow the head coach. So now, one of them was made head coach. That's not really any big deal when you think about it.
If he wasn't ready for this job, then I don't think you can make the argument that he was ready for the O.C. position. |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
With that said, there could be some time needed for him to get a feel for his playcalling. As to say that his playcalling should improve as the 2008 season goes on.
Then again, there really is no such thing as "wrong" playcalling unless you consistently go against the percentages, which requires a general lack of common sense. |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Multiple Sources Confirm Jim Zorn Named Head Coach
Basically at this point, I was willing to give anyone a shot. I wanted Williams, it didn't work out, so I stand behind Zorn and I'm going to hope for the best. I really think our offense is going to be in great hands, which is going to be awsome to see....I'm slightly worried about our defense at this point. We have some great players on that side of the ball, but I just hope we can maintain some sort of power without Williams.
