Re: 2009 Free Agents
First off who says we need a "speed back" yea I seen Sproles too and yea it would be nice to have "him" but Betts is no Ward and never will be.
A Portis/Ward combo would knock the crap out of any defense. Wards stats Derrick Ward - New York Giants - NFL - Yahoo! Sports Betts stats Ladell Betts - Washington Redskins - NFL - Yahoo! Sports Ward put up over 1000 yards and he had to share the stage with Jacobs who only put up 60 more yards than Ward. Jacobs put up 1089 yards. Together they put up 2100 yards. If you put Portis and Ward together in 2008 with there respected yardage we would have had 2500 rushing yards. Ill take that any day. Ward also avg 5.6 YPC vs Betts 3.4 YPC No contest here my friend. FYI Ward is not my FA pick. I was just responding to 53fan post on Jacobs. But I wouldnt say no to Ward thats for sure
So the Giants o-line comes as a package deal with Derrick Ward? Ladell Betts statistics 2006: Ladell Betts - Washington Redskins - Game Log - NFL - Yahoo! Sports Ward is a fine player, and someone should sign him to be their lead back for a couple of years (he is nearing the age when running backs tend to wear out, though he does not have a lot of carries on his body). The Redskins already have plenty of money committed to the running back position, though, so whatever you think of the current players it is not in the cards to add anyone of consequence there. Everyone knows that the O-Line is where they need to concentrate resources. It is obvious, it has been said over and over, but it is the simple truth. |

I guess I'll answer this. It was a joke intended for 53fan. See Post #183 But for the record. Portis did'nt need the Giants O Line and neither would Ward. How about giving the Skins O Line some credit for Portis' success. |

Wow, No credit to our O Line. Portis ran 1400+ yards all by himself. OK! |

DENVER DUMPS DRE’
Posted by Mike Florio on February 17, 2009, 8:13 p.m. After cutting six players on Monday, the Denver Broncos dumped a seventh guy on Tuesday. Gone is cornerback Dre’ Bly, according to the team’s official web site. Bly arrived via trade two years ago. He was due to earn a base salary of $3.25 million in 2009. The move makes him an unrestricted free agent. He spent his first four years with the Rams, then four with the Lions. |

When he and Champ are healthy they are pretty elite tandem, although both are on the wrong side of 30. |

Re: 2009 Free Agents
Would you look into signing Bly? I might sign him if I knew for sure we were going to release Springs. Remember Cerrato was jumping at the gun to trade for him last year. If we signed him to a reasonable deal would still have a heck of a trio (Hall, Rogers, Bly). What do you guys think?

But not at Springs' expense, necessarily.

Yes they did want to reel Dre in to DC. No tellin, if Springs gets the axe as he should, anything is possible. If the dollars are sensible and we also land Hall...ya never know. And Rodgers is still here, which for the record I not only think he will be, but it would be foolish to let him go. That would be a solid tandem at CB. |
Re: 2009 Free Agents
Does anyone know what the deal with Dwayne Robertson is. Former 4th pick in the 2003 draft, only 27. Also, the Patriots released Billy Gates OG, started several games last year, he is 27 also. Does any know anything about him?

Are we ever going to see any players released? Such as Jansen, Springs, Washington, and Griffin.

Slow down grasshopper! Wishful thinking on JJ going anywhere. Grif might just be around to, I hope we keep Grif. I would think SS is a goner but who knows. I would take any bet MW's time has expired in DC. |

Negative cap space to dump Dre..?
BRONCOS LOST CAP SPACE TO CUT BLY Posted by Mike Florio on February 17, 2009, 10:49 p.m. Though the decision to release cornerback Dre’ Bly allows the Broncos to avoid $3.25 million in 2009 base salary, Bill Williamson of ESPN.com reports that the move actually resulted in a negative cap hit for the team. Per Williamson, the release of Bly triggers $9 million in dead money. When subtracting the money (salary and bonuses) that Bly won’t receive this year, the net cap savings is a negative $2.6 million. Regardless, the Broncos have more than $25 million in 2009 cap space. |

As said Jansen is back for sure cuz the release fee is too big this year. Griff will be back too based on a solid '08 performance. Cutting Springs, Washington, Taylor and/or Daniels this early tips our hand and is pretty unnecessary... but like you i'm getting pretty impatient :) |

53 you're doin a helluva job keepin us abreast of the action... not surprised by this but also don't envy the Cards. They're set to pay him about $10 mil on the year now because the salary has to increase 20% over last year - Dansby is good but I think that's more than he's worth in the big picture of things. Cards didn't have a lot of options though... well what do you think is it on to Michael Boley or Leroy Hill or Jon Vilma? |

well what do you think is it on to Michael Boley or Leroy Hill or Jon Vilma?
I don't know much about Hill right now but I think Detroit is looking hard at Vilma. I would like to know more about Boley. Before last year the Falcons were looking to sign him to a long term contract. I know he had some personal problems and some coaching changes. He has some talent and he's young. I think we should at least take a look at him. |
Re: 2009 Free Agents
Seems Hill was recently arrested for possession of pot and missed the last 4 games of the season with a pinched nerve in his neck. I think Seattle is still trying to sign him to a contract but may Tag him if an agreement isn't reached. At least that was their plan before the drug charge.

I think his name is Bill Yates...though Bill Gates could do wonders for our salary cap concerns :) Solid backup I think |

Re: 2009 Free Agents
HAYNESWORTH TO HIT THE MARKET
Posted by Mike Florio on February 18, 2009, 11:57 a.m. If the Tennessee Titans manage to re-sign defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, it won’t happen until after Haynesworth has seen what other teams are willing to pay. According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Haynesworth won’t do a deal with the Titans until after he tests the market. Schefter says that a “host” of teams are expected to make a play for Haynesworth, one of the top free agents of the 2009 class, and that Haynesworth’s deal could average roughly $12 million per year with guaranteed money in excess of $30 million. We still believe that the principle of caveat emptor applies here, especially in the wake of last week’s revelation that, four days after being placed on probation, Haynesworth allegedly caused an automobile accident by driving his Ferrari at a high rate of speed. For more on the concerns teams should have about making a guy who didn’t become a force until he was playing to get paid the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL, here’s a recent thing we did for SportingNews.com. |
Re: 2009 Free Agents
I found this article to be pretty interesting. It's from National Football Post (although it was linked on CBS Sports), and it goes over the evaluation process for FA O-lineman, and gives a list/synopsis of the players out there.

Apparently Peppers has told the Panthers he would only accept a trade to one of four teams. Three are in the NFC, one of which is the Cowcircus, and the other is an unnamed AFC team. Interesting. I wonder who the other NFC teams are....
