If you are on the fringe of FG range and throw a pick by 'going for the endzone' that's a recipe for getting a coach fired.
Wow you read my mind. If the Redskins get to the 35 yard line and all you need is 3 points to win or tie you would not go to the endzone. Defense would sit back and let you catch it underneath but would defend the endzone. If a QB forces it in the endzone it may get picked off. The goal of the 2min drill was to get into FG range or score depending on how much time was on the clock. |
He had a tough 2 min drill today. One ran out of time and the other he threw a int. And in the QB drills he was knocked down by a barrage of pads. Its still early, we will see how it goes come preseason. Hopefully our defense is JUST THAT GOOD.
They always say that the back up QB's are a fan favorite until they get thrown into the fire. Then they the fans have a reality check that he was a back up for a good reason. Colt B. great College career doesn't always mean a great NFL career. |

Per the Associated Press, Haynesworth received an injection on Sunday to cushion a knee that he sprained late in the 2008 season. He did not particpate in the second practice of the day. Coach Jim Zorn reportedly described the procedure as "normal." What isn't entirely "normal" is that Zorn's comments regarding Haynesworth were omitted from the collection of quotes from Zorn that was distributed by the team on Sunday. |

On a separate note, Terl's Blog had a decent article on Hunter Smith. It focused on him as the holder for our kicker. I wanted Smith, but didn't think about that side benefit. Sounds like he is a professional
So what makes a hold "clutch" or "accurate"? Smith seemed happy to be asked. "A good hold makes as smooth of a transition for the kicker as possible. I catch the ball, get it down quickly with the laces out and it's a matter of, wherever the snap is, I give him the same product every time and that only comes from just work."
|
Re: Training Camp Updates:
So this means the Orakpo was drilling from DE?
He may have lined up at other spots as well but he was definitely at RE on some plays. (It's hard to watch everything from ground level 40 yards away with Christie Cooley 10 feet in front of you with friends to boot). At one point against shotgun by the offense, the front four from L to R was Carter Daniels Haynesworth Orakpo. You may recall that Daniels played tackle some on 3rd down situations 2 seasons ago and appparently Blache is at least considering doing that again. He certainly isn't too small for it. He's still the biggest guy out there. Maybe Heyer, Dockery and Williams are in his zip code, but Daniels is just humongous. |

70-what about Marcus Mason? Anything on him?

Re: Training Camp Updates:
70-what about Marcus Mason? Anything on him?
I hear Chase had another up and down day.
Mason looked okay I guess on Saturday. I haven't been back since then. The running game is very diificult to evaluate because they don't really finish the play. You have to sort of speculate as to what the gain might have been. Betts still looks the best catching the ball out of the backfield. He's got a great knack for dancing along the sidelines. The situation with the QBs is hard to evaluate as well. I mean, If you're Chase, are you going to check down or are you going to say "What the hell?" and chuck it deep more times than not? Ditto PJ. They have nothing to lose or very little anyways. The fans see them hurling it long and say, "that's the kind of QB we need etc. etc." The thing that worries me is that I'm not sure Campbell has the ability to anticipate the movement of people on the field well enough to know where to go with the ball. This is the classic QB failing, IMO. As a result, he waits until he sees it with his own two eyes, which is often too late. Collins can anticipate better, but can't get the ball there if it's more than twenty yards away. If we coulk throw those two in a blender and make one QB smoothie we might have something. Throw in a little vodka never hurts. But as I said before, perhaps JC was simple off on Saturday. To answer your question more directly, he still lokks like the Marcus Mason that has impressed us these past few pre-seasons. He could play in this league, IMO. The fact that he's back here is one of the bigger surprises to me. I figured he would definitely catch on with the next team he was with, didn't you? |

According to the Post, the defense is tearing apart the O-Line. That's going to make Zorn lose his job, and it's not his fault.

What did you expect? we went out and got 1 of the best DT's in the league and we got the best passrusher in the draft IMO.plus Daniels is back and playing well. We didnt invest much in the Oline so ofcourse they are behind. |

Roydell Williams had surgery on his broken left pinkie today and won't play for some time. Looks like he's the first guy to drop in the #5 WR competition.
Phat Al is not doing anything different, health-wise, than he was doing with the Titans. I sometimes feel like Snyder might think that because of what Buges did back in the day he still turn any half decent player into a Hog, and that is part of the reason that they (the FO) haven't put more into stacking the O-line with stronger/younger talent.

So long as Fat Albert is ready by the time the season starts I'm cool. If he isn't I want him fined for something...a bogus violation of some sort will do as long has he doesn't get paid.

Re: Training Camp Updates:
Yeah...Rhinehart and Williams....how are these 2 doing?
I am really interested in this since they could arguably fight for a starting role in our weakest position... Also unanswered is our OLBs not including Orapko...especially the rookies...anyone know how they are doing? |

Glad to see Rinehart getting some reps since Randy Thomas is being held out of practice. With the team giving RT some time off, I hoe Rinehart can get some extra reps during the preseason.

I agree Ruh, the more reps Rinehart can get the better. The more the younger guys step up, the better off we are. It would be nice to not have such a big dropoff if one of our starters has to sit. |

JC is what i really want to see JC improve upon in his 2nd yr in zorns offense. if he can get more fluid and comfortable with what he sees and is confident he knows where to put the ball the passing game should start to click instead of having to rely on the Oline to hold off defenders as JC hesitates/second guesses what he sees and doesnt throw the ball until the receiver is open open. if only this was JC third or fourth year in the same offense . . . go skins!! |

Well the only way the D should know the play is if the O is telling them. Each formation has a bundle of plays and they should not know the play just by the O's formation. If thats the case then we have bigger issues. |

I of course don't have the link, but I think it was Samuels who said it, and yes it is the coaches telling everyone the plays. I believe, right now they are all made aware of it so that everyone can be focusing on techniques. I don't think that is a big issue. For example, initially when training on a military operation, you know the enemies goal and tactics so that you can train for that particular attack. once you have trained several scenarios the enemy is given more leeway and you are then learning how to adapt etc. Remember this is not day 31 of camp, if there is a day 31. Everyone is getting on the same page, etc. |
Re: Training Camp Updates:
Plus the offense will repeat plays to work on getting them down. They may run the same play several times in one practice and, needless to say, at best it will be a surprise for the defense only on the first rep.

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/redskinsinsider/ R. Thomas Rests as O Line Gets Banged Up The Redskins rested several players on Tuesday morning with more bumps and bruises flaring up now as the two-a-day training camp grind starts to take its toll. Offensive guard Randy Thomas was rested with a sore knee. Thomas, who had arthroscopic surgery on the same knee this offseason, "felt like when he tried to really anchor and put a load on it, it was a little bit abrasive so we held him out today," Redskins Coach Jim Zorn said. There is no timetable on Thomas's return, but Zorn said he did not expect it to be long. Stephon Heyer left practice after getting his left knee rolled during goal line drills and Zorn called it a "bruise" and said he did not know the extent of the injury or whether Heyer would have an MRI. Mike Williams was also rested with a groin injury. "He's got a little muscle pull," Zorn said. Second-year receivers Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly were mostly rested during practice, as well. With Roydell Williams out after undergoing surgery on his pinkie finger, several wide receivers have increased their workload and "they've got sore legs right now, too, so we held a couple out," Zorn said. According to Zorn, Williams likely will not be able to run for three weeks and Zorn speculated that the injury would be a four- to six-week setback. Center Casey Rabach (calf) also did not finish the practice but Zorn did not seem overly concerned with the "muscle aches" across the line. |
