I thought it was the "big" news about the draft party being held there?

about $6 mil. /year for Porter seems too rich. In Miami his game had gone into somewhat of a decline and, given his age, his play is unlikely to get better. I think it is good for the team's culture if we do not overpay folks and I think Ariz. overpaid Porter. |

i gotta give some credit to the new men in town (shanny and bruce) seems to me like they want to sign players that are hungry and just want to play some football. no longer is washington the destination of a player who is going from team to team just looking for the highest contract.

Unfortunately, that's what free-agency has done to the game of football. Rent a player has spiralled out of control, and it's definitely a good thing to see the Reskins exercising good judgement. |
Re: 2010 NFL Off-Season Rumors and Reports (Week 3)
It has been fairly quiet during the FA period but I got a feeling that it will be pretty active during the draft with some trades. I expect Carter, Landry and possibly Moss saying goodbye. I would love to get Golden Tate somehow.

ya I would have given porter like 2 million a year max, not 6 million a year.

Thumbs up FO! Keep moving forward as a TEAM.

Re: 2010 NFL Off-Season Rumors and Reports (Week 3)
I'm just speculating, but the new FO may be using the Redskins' old reputation to make other franchises squeeze out more money, and thus take out more of their cap space.

I don't want to make a big deal out of this since all the facts are not in, but Kelly Johnson Of Comcast is reporting that Albert Haynesworth showed up for orientation on Monday, then proceeded to miss workouts this week. Hopefully there is a legitimate excuse.

We aren't replacing Moss and Landry with 3rd and 4th round players. If we get rid of Carter, Landry and Moss we are throwing away 2010. I don't know about you but I would be pretty pissed about that. I am sure that Haynesworth wouldn't be too happy either. |

Whats the fascination with this trade Laron Landry crap, this guy was the best Safety to come out of the draft 2ys ago, and he would be a Pro Bowl safety if the Redskins woud get thier heads out of the sand and play him at SS where he is suppose to play....The most stupid move the skins could make is the trade a safety that was the first round
(6th overall) pick 2yrs ago for anything less than a 1st round pick...Period Seems people have forgotten his first 2yrs ........... Posted 167 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in two NFL seasons Named to the NFL All-Rookie Defensive Team as a rookie in 2007 Named a first alternate to the Pro Bowl in 2008 and third alternate to the Pro Bowl in 2007 Recorded the first two interceptions of his career in a Wild Card Playoff game at Seattle (1/5) |

Everyone in the top 5 wants to trade down (for several reasons), in the current environment it is very unlikely, so considering the scenario is most likely a waste of time. We can disagree but trading Landry for a 3rd hurts the team and I don't see it happening. If we trade down, we aren't getting Berry. Mays, sure, but he isn't making it to the pick we would get for Landry so that is a net negative. I don't think it makes any sense to trade Landry for a 3rd and pick a safety with our first pick. It just doesn't. Now if you keep Landry and pick Berry, I can live with that. It isn't what I want but Berry is an animal and if he is there at 4 he is arguably the most talented player on the board. Tackle with the 2nd, ok. I would rather use the 1st on a tackle but that is fine. Picking a guard with the aquired 3rd, ok. I don't think you can count on him to play in year one (see Chad Rinehart) but I want us to start taking the shotgun approach to drafting O-lineman. I am fine with trading Carter. I think SmootSmack said we could get a 4th, maybe? |

I certainly haven't nor will I ever forget that about Sean. Laron is no ST. However he's a better player than he showed last year. He needs to a be a SS and not a FS. We shall see what kind of player he is, but I'm down on him for sure right now. |

That is up to him. ST had a ton of late hit penalties too. I think he had 5 straight weeks of fines, or something like that. Landry makes the same mistakes that a lot of young players make. He had a bad third year overall but he did a lot of good things too. It is just at 4-12, it is pretty easy to focus on the negatives. |

Once again, not to knock on his talent, but my whole deal is with his seemingly lack of discipline. Granted, he's no Pacman Jones or anything like that, but his attitude towards the game such as...against the Giants, seemingly more preoccupied with getting payback on Brandon Jacobs rather than actually playing the game; consistently going after the big hit (and missing miserably), again the late hit penalties, etc., etc. It appears that he changed a bit towards the end of the season, but I think he needs to get his attitude in check. |

'06 was ST's worst year, it also happened to be his 3rd year. Landry is still very young, I think he could improve immensely. I think your description could have described Landry last year or Taylor in '06. To the "t". |

I think your description could have described Landry last year or Taylor in '06. To the "t".
Agreed. The common solution to the Landry dilemma, among fans, appears to be to push Horton and Doughty into backup roles while we play him at the non-premium strong safety position. This would be taking the easy road out, I think, as we can scrap two of the players on the team we have the least investment in while trying to salvage a third. But to me, it's questionable whether Landry can even outplay either Horton or Doughty in the box. So I say: he's physically gifted enough, let's keep him back there as a traditional coverage safety and just change the way he's supposed to be reading the offense. Whatever Blache/Gray/Jackson were doing, let's change it. If he can adapt and reach his potential, great. If not, I'd rather release him a year from now as opposed to try to work an extension with him as a strong safety. |
Re: 2010 NFL Off-Season Rumors and Reports (Week 3)
Particularly, the assertion that he's a great athlete that is unfit to play a position with such an athletic premium is kind of mind boggling. Moving him to SS is just one of many ways to simplify his role in the defense (along with pretty much any other change, given the ridiculous amount of responsibility Landry had in the defense), but it's the one with basically no upside.

Re: 2010 NFL Off-Season Rumors and Reports (Week 3)
This free agency period has me thinking that they're going to go OL with the first pick, maybe even the second pick as well as it seems that at least in this initial stage they're playing things close to the vest. Their biggest risk taken right now seems to be a tossup between repainting the weight room and giving Larry Johnson and incentive laden deal.
|
Re: 2010 NFL Off-Season Rumors and Reports (Week 3)
I think they will go with OT with the first pick. Hopefully trade down with the second pick. They have offered contracts to both Simms and Levi, so we will see what happens.

Excellent post!!My beef with Landry is his attitude. If he keeps up this childish bullshit then he will never live to his potential, basically in getting Mays or Berry you get a talented player without BS. I'm sick of "me" players who hurt the team with their own selfish attitude. |

I see your point on the upside of keeping the superior athlete at FS. Do you think/attribute Landry's struggles to Blache and the secondary coach's tutelage? What I mean is, there were reports last year of Blache asking for Landry to approach situations a certain way and the secondary coaches asking him to do something different. If I'm remembering correctly the safeties and corners attended separate meetings for game planning??? |
Re: 2010 NFL Off-Season Rumors and Reports (Week 3)
Landry has enormous talent but will never be that good of player. I hate to say this about anyone, but the kid just seems dumb out on the field. He sees to just run around like a chicken with his head cut off. I saw so many missed plays he made because he is always thinks he is the most athletic person on the field (which might be true, but not the the extent that he believes it) and can just go full steam to stop any play. He hasn't developed any football sense because he just relies on his athletic ability his entire life up untill his pro career. Developing a feel for the game does not come naturally, it comes with years of experience, and for him to start learning now would take too long for him to get the hang of it. He will never be a superstar, he can be effective if we ask him to do simple tasks though that doesn't require much of a learning curve.

Man I effing hate it when Sean gets associated w/ Landry, but since it keeps cropping up I have to say this: Sean NEVER avoided contact. He never dove to the turf to avoid making a tackle. He never threw himself out of position at the last second to get out of the way of the ball-carrier. Sean was the fiercest safety in football. Yes he had a down year adjusting to Williams' scheme, but does anyone doubt he would be a greatest if he were alive today? Most important Sean was a guy we were so proud of to see in the B & G. The dude visited w/ his family in the stands on gameday. His priorities were solid. Sean had already arrived as a person, if not as the player we knew he was becoming. |

What has Landry done that is so friggen' bad? I am starting to think that people are starting to hold him to some ridiculous standard because we lost Sean.
Seriously? Do you watch Landry on the field? Against Atlanta Landry avoided contact almost the entire game. Very early he waited for a player to run out of bounce instead of creating contact (I think it was Turner). L8r he dove to the turf in terror when Turner ran up the gut and Landry had an open field shot. Personally I think that play is the most memorable of Landry's career rather than his getting trucked by Jacobs. He avoided Turner basically the entire game though, as he does whenever he faces a dangerous player. I mean this stuff is on tape... And it's another reason why the moving him to SS argument is nonsense. First of all he played a centerfield safety for LSU. He roamed deep in the backfield and picked off a hell of the lot of passes, until his senior year when offensive coordinators just stopped calling any deep passes against LSU's defense. He was a deep FS almost his entire college career. When we drafted him it was to compliment Sean in that we could have two guys roaming back there, not to keep a guy in the box. If Landry is put at SS I PROMISE our defense regresses because it only means more missed tackles and more penalties. As FS Landry rarely sees the RB get that far up-field (because we've got excellent tacklers mostly at LB and SS) but almost every time that happens Landry gives up a TD. |

I don't see any reason that Landry cannot get better. What leads you to believe that he won't mature and become a better pro? To judge a man's career after only 3 years just doesn't make sense to me. |
