That is not a good sign Gus and I have thought the same thing, but damn can we really get thiswhole team together in one off season? LOL.
|
Re: Report: Redskins are pursuing Vincent Jackson
That is why I don't like this go heavy with the FA crap. It is more expensive, the players you acquire are looking for a payday and more likely less hungry to perform to an optimal level than a younger draftee. I like Donovan a lot, but his best ball is definitely behind him. It isn't nearly as bad as when we got Brunell after his tank was pretty much empty, but I don't feel he is at optimal performance level, especially with these newbies, in which, the FO doesn't have any confidence in.
|
Re: Report: Redskins are pursuing Vincent Jackson
To me the only things that really changed with the organization are the faces in the FO, another coach, and the FA acquisitions were smarter, which if you look at it really isn't much of a change for Snyder.
|
Re: Report: Redskins are pursuing Vincent Jackson
I voted we should get this guy if it didn't cost too much ...such as the equivalent of a 2nd and 4th...somehow funded by Haynesworth and change....but I am starting to bail on this guy....I really think that this "trade" scenario is just boredom and press to generate attention for a disgruntled WR.
I dont want a boozer on the team if we can help it...of course, if we score him cheap....I will probably change my mind! |
Re: Report: Redskins are pursuing Vincent Jackson
A lot of folks thought the same way when T.O. was released in Dallas.
Lost their biggest weapon, right? Then this kid named Austin stepped up and made some plays here and there. Holdouts and vacant roster spots provide opportunities for those further down the depth chart. And if the Chargers are hanging their season on whether or not Jackson is there, they have bigger scouting issues than this beef with VJ. They have a pretty good QB in Rivers, a Pro-Bowl TE in Gates, pretty solid stable of RB's. They'll be okay.
You said they lose nothing. That's not true, which was my point. It's not like they'd have to start 10 men while he's out, but he's a helluva WR. I don't think anyone on that roster is going to step in and have his kind of impact right away. I agree that SD will be okay without out, but not as good as with him. |

One could argue, why not?? If they have done this well (which is speculation at this point, but for the sake of arguement, lets give em an A- so far) during the seasono prior to the lockout, I wonder what they could do with loaded guns and a whole buttload of UNrestricted free agents possibly next year. Ill be the first one to say, some of their moves have been questionable, but why couldn't they solidify the roster at every position in one offseason?? If anyone can do it, its shanahan and his staffs mentality. No Nonsense. |

Really? You do realize he's basically stepped back and handed over the reins to Allen and Shanahan don't you? And then when you look at the way the org has reached out to it's alumni, I would say the winds of change have blown through DC pretty significantly. |
Re: Report: Redskins are pursuing Vincent Jackson
trade fat albert to raiders, raiders send 2nd rd pick to sd and we get vj. every body wins.
|
Re: Report: Redskins are pursuing Vincent Jackson
A 3 way trade involving ah and Jackson would be the best way to get him here. IF KS feels he needs a dominant WR, I hope BA pulls whatever tricks he can. I know I keep expecting a late Sunday tweet that VJ is a Redskin...
NFL Network also reported yesterday that the Bears proposed a trade to SD for Jackson. The Bears were supposedly offering up two-2nd rounders for Jackson.
And SD said no. That is AJ Smith for you though. He is a serious hardass as a GM. He will not give in to Jacksons hold out.
I tend to agree with you on Smith. He's a stubborn SOB. In the end I don't see VJ going anywhere. He really doesn't have much leverage in all of this. |

I'm with you on this. As I have stated a while ago I was ready to throw in the towel at the end of this season. I really hate to admit it. I was a beaten man having to sit through the last 17 yrs of mediocracy. Zorn had done it for me. I'll admit it now that I actually was trying to think of another team I could root for cause I simply couldn't stand to see the same BS being put on the field. I told myself significant change would have to happen. I think it was unreasonable to expect the owner to sell a team that was making money so I knew that was not going to happen. So significant change was going to have to start from Cerrato on down. I truly didn't see Snyder getting rid of his long time buddy. Which to me meant more BS. I refused to support that and put any more money into the team in hopes that maybe the team would start to lose money and the owner would think of selling the team. I was kinda shocked to see Cerrato resign. That was a huge step for me. Also Allen doesn't come to us with an excellent resume' but keep in mind he wasn't bad either. Put him with the right situation and HC and I think he will do well. I question our scouting department, which will decide if Allen did well for this yrs draft, but they couldn't throw the scouting department out knowing we only had a short few months to draft day. Any changes there would need to be made after the draft. Shanahan is a proven HC. People want to throw out there that he has only won 2 SB's. Atleast he's been there. His offenses were #1 for many yrs. Which means if he can change our offense around there will be lots of scoring and lots of cheering. His main issue was he refused to fire a defensive coach that the Bronco's owner wanted fired because he was loyal to him. We kinda have to wait and see what happens here defensively. Haslett is not my idea of a defensive guru and am kinda worried about our defense now but I'm holding out hope that Haslett's best yrs are in front of him and we show up with a winner. See Haslett played in a 3-4. He coached a 3-4 in Pittsburg. I think he tried to coach a 4-3 while with the Saints which didn't go over well and with the Rams which didn't do bad but didn't do well either. We may find out we have a 3-4 guru in Haslett or he may be simply a dud. What Shanahan does with Haslett if he bombs will tell us if Shanahan has learned his lessons. Snyder on the other hand by all accounts seems to have stepped back as the fans have asked and hired the right people to get the job done. Lets atleast admire him for looking into the mirror and deciding what he was doing was not working and it needed to change. Lets be thankfull that our owner could recognize this and change. I'd hate to be a Dallas fan. The last time Dallas went to the SB Jerry took a hands off approach and let his good ole college buddy Jimmy Johnson take over the team. I think Jimmy left cause Jerry was starting to meddle and has ever since. Which is why I don't think Dallas will go all the way anytime soon. Even though they are supposed to be the top dog. Owners need to let the people who know how to coach, coach. One would think the coach's know what players fit best into their system and not the owner. As I see it there was enough change in the front office to show me that we were not going to get the same ole BS again. I'm not saying we are on the SB track this yr or next but change was needed from the GM down to show me things would be different. DS constantly peraded his prize toys out on stage everytime and that even changed. He allowed Allen to handle all that. The mere fact that Allen and Shanahan had spoken prior to getting hired anywhere and both agreed they wanted to work together and that we got both shows me the chemistry will be good for once between GM and HC not annymosity and controling. I think 90% of Cerrato's issues were he didn't want to give up control to the HC. He didn't want DS siding with anyone but him. Thankfully that is all gone. Where to I don't know cause I am scared it might return but if what we have now turns out to be a winning combination then all that will be forgotten. |

Ok, I am not one of those who believes that we are doing things as we have in the past.
Hell if these guys can get this deal done and get another piece of our offense in place. I am all for it. Just don't want to mortgage our future draft picks is all. BUT like I mentioned in an earlier post I do not like drafting WR in the draft. These guys seem to miss more than succeed. |

Matty, did things change when Obama became president? Did Obama stop the crazy spending and the stupid revenue draining wars? Not trying to be political, but that is the best analogy that I can come up with. To quote George Carlin, "Forget the politicians, they are just there to make believe you have a choice, you don't, you have owners, they own you." Change general manager/new coach for politicians and you could possibly have the same situation in good ole DC. Like I stated before, the only thing that has thus far changed has been that the FA moves are somewhat smarter, meaning no more $100 million dollar contracts or over the hill old farts way past their prime. Our draft other than our #1 pick was questionable. We wasted picks on an undersize WR and yet another TE that was not needed. Yeah folks like to throw McNabb in as part of our draft, but he was a FA acquisition that cost us picks. Bottom line for me is that the overall philosophy seems to be win now and not really trying to build up the franchise over the long haul, which is what it was before Allen/Shanny was brought on board. I mean wasn't the big change we expected from these two was a solid long term plan to build up a perennial winner other than go for the big name FAs all the time? I know it is going to take time for the new FO to right the wrongs that were done under Vinny, but coming out going heavy on free agency doesn't bode well for me. And as for Snyder stepping back after over a decade of trying to be a clone of Jerry Jones, don't count on that being the case or lasting too long. He still is the guy signing the checks and a man with his ego isn't just going to do a 180 anytime soon. |

Austin doesn't have to do much, seeing as the bar was set so low by ARE.

Then he came to Washington and had maybe 2-3 games with 100 yds receiving and only one good return game that I can remember.. ( colts game). Atleast Santana hasn't been a dissapointment since we traded for him. |

Re: Report: Redskins are pursuing Vincent Jackson
how the hell did this go from Jackson to Obama?
|
Re: Report: Redskins are pursuing Vincent Jackson
Gus, I think you used a terrible analogy. I think a GM and HC have a far greater chance of changing around a bad team quicker vs. a new President and a few new Congressmen. Not only is the President working with a far greater debt he has to satisfy other people to agree with him and vote in his policies. A new GM can hire whatever coach he wants, whatever coaching staff he wants, whatever scouting department he wants, and whatever players he thinks he needs with in reason. Yes the owner does write the checks so that is why I said within reason. But with someone like DS who is willing to spend.... Allen and Shanny have a far better chance of changing things at Redskins Park vs. Obama and Congress. Imagine if Allen had to run everything through a group of people who had to vote on whether anything he presented was a good course of action. The Skins would never change.
You would have better off using an anology of a business owner. He can fire all his employees and hire a whole new staff but the business will still continue to be crappy and not succeed if the owner does not change his goals or business plan. Otherwise he gets the same product out of different management and employees. |

Nice read nyc, i wonder how MS felt about our 2 WR two years ago when he drafted eddie royal for Denver? If he didnt feel that these 2 had something for him maybe thats why he isn't really giving him a fair shot now. Of course BA could be the one trying to push for VJ with mike not putting up much of a fight becuase he did like vj coming out college. I dont know time will tell how this goes down.

I think with the better coaching we will be better. We don't need to get VJ but if the FO thinks yes then I'll role with their opinion.

Not a good analogy. McNabb was a trade, not a free agent. Anyway, what big name free agents have the Skins gone after? And I don't recall hearing how the only change that would be welcomed to DC was a long term rebuilding plan. Not sure about you but the change I want only involves one thing, and that's winning. And I don't care how they get to that goal. |

Chargers still playing hardball with Vincent Jackson
Twitter / Adam Schefter: League sources say Charger ... Posted by Mike Florio on July 5, 2010 10:33 AM ET The San Diego Chargers continue to put the screws to receiver Vincent Jackson. The four-year veteran, who would have been an unrestricted free agent but for the disappearance of the salary cap, became a recipient of the highest possible restricted free agency tender. No one made a run at him during the RFA signing period, which isn't surprising given that only one player signed an offer sheet this year as a restricted free agent. With no long-term deal reached between the two sides (blame it on the uncertainty coming from the lack of a new CBA, or collusion), Jackson opted not to sign his tender offer. As of June 15, the Chargers had the right to reduce the offer dramatically -- and so they did. Since then, periodic accounts have emerged regarding the possibility that other teams would be interested in trading for Jackson. But no progress has been made. Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Chargers aren't shopping Jackson, and they aren't interested in trading him. So what is G.M. A.J. Smith trying to prove? He has declared both Jackson and tackle Marcus McNeill as players who have been "lost," but Smith still insists on squatting on their rights. Does Smith not realize that, in the end, he's dealing with human beings -- and that a locker-room full of them will be watching this situation closely? Smith, who once instructed that a photo of him be replaced in the team's media guide because it showed him smiling, has plenty of talent. Indeed, he has enough talent to overcome what looks to be a pretty serious personality defect, on that prompts him to treat his players like nameless, faceless pieces of property and to make no effort whatsoever to display basic interpersonal traits and emotions. Maybe Smith has decided to keep his distance in order to avoid ever making dispassionate decisions based on anything other than the best football interests of the franchise. Maybe he's trying to avoid being perceived as soft. Or maybe he's simply a big jerk. Either way, his handling of Jackson makes no sense. The situation seems to be less about nudging the 2010 Chargers toward a championship (or at least winning a playoff game or two) and more about sending a message to Jackson and every other player regarding the power that NFL teams hold in the uncapped year. And that could make it even harder for the 2010 Chargers to consistently sell those last couple of thousand tickets to their home games, unless the team plans to devote the money they won't be paying Jackson to buying the unsold seats at 34 cents on the dollar. |

What kind of message would it be sending we have a DL who is upset with were the media has been reporting he will be playing NT & wants a trade, then we go out and get a WR who is unhappy & wants more money.

I am not of the opinion this will get done anymore. I really want to see DT and Kelly get shot with this new offense. Coach Shanny should let these guys play in pads before he replaces them. DT has the ability to make plays andMK should be able to get it going with proper coaching. Coach these guys up and get it done.

Re: Report: Redskins are pursuing Vincent Jackson
I say leave VJ alone...The Skins don't need him! Just stick with Moss, Kelly and Thomas cause they'll have the ability of putting Cooley and Davis on the field at the same time. Imagine Moss, Cooley on one side with Davis and Thomas/Kelly on the other. Single back Portis/Johnson...no need for lead blocker with the oline zone blocking and spreading the D out. Sounds great...Doesn't it?
