Telling me that I'm incorrect or that I misremember or whatever doesn't make me less correct. I was just stating facts, re: the Broncos offense. That's how they played it, straight from both game film (first hand -- what I studied, and second hand -- what others study). It's not a disagreement, if you didn't already know this, you're overselling what you know of last year's Broncos offense.
Maybe I am unsure as to what you are really trying to say, because it's common knowledge that they moved Eddie Royal around all season and he was extremely ineffective.
But for a guy who has never ranked in the top ten in any value statistic in any one season of his career, I'm not sure how anyone can put him in their top ten.
Sorry, you are incorrect again sir. He was 5th in 07 in catches, 3rd in 08 and 3rd in 09. He was 6th in 07 in rec. yards, and 7th in 08. He was also 7th in rec tds last year. He was 7th in 07, and 6th in 08 in rec yards per game. He aso ranked 9th in 07 and 9th in 08 in yards per touch. (ps- a wr does not have to be explosive to be effective, nor does YPC truly show explosiveness. Example: Welker has a 10.9 career YPC, and 10.7 with the patriots...last year he had only an 11.0 ypc, while Marshall had a 11.1 last year and a 12.3 for his career...so according to your theory, Marshall is more explosive than Welker? Obviously that would not be the case, just showing the hole in your thoughts.)
For a guy who is at the top of his craft in catches, you'd like him to match those catch totals in something more meaningful. But for Marshall, either he's just not being used properly (by two coaches, including our own), or there's just not much else there.
Just an FYI, his YPC was 12.83 with Shanny, 11.1 with McDaniels.
He's one of the most immature athletes I've ever seen.
I will not argue his maturity level, but that doesn't make him any less effective on the field. I think you are ranking him so low because of your distain for his attitude.

Re: V. Jackson "Prepared to Sit out season"

Just an FYI, here is a list of the top YPC last year:
1- Mike Wallace
2- DeSean Jackson
3- Mohamed Massaquoi
t-4- Vincent Jackson
t-4- Malcolm Floyd
6- Chris Chambers
t-7- Patrick Crayton
t-7- Hakeem Nicks
9-Kenny Britt
10- Greg Jennings

The fact that Massaquoi is even on this list makes me laugh considering he had the worst targeted to reception ratio last year.
Throw in Chris Chambers who was a cast off in San Diego, and Patrick Crayton who luckily just found a home recently and this list clearly does not represent great wr's. YPC is solely how they are used, not a barometer of how good the wr is.
Agree with you on Boldin. And: he has more yards per game, more yards per catch, more catches per attempt, than Marshall, who you have in your top five.

Unless Marshall has vastly improved, Boldin>Marshall. And, again, I agree with you that Boldin probably is (isn't?) a top 15 receiver. They are typematically similar, though.
At least we can agree on something. LOL ;)
He did have 100 receptions in 2005 also. Boldin is a legitimate number 1 WR, Not a 2 masking as a 1
When he had 102 receptions in 05, Fitzgerald had 103. Boldin is not the same as he was when he was a rookie. He would make a great 1b, but he is not a true 1a IMO. Don't get me wrong, he's a top 20, maybe top 15 option, I completely disagree he's a top 10 is all.

Re: V. Jackson "Prepared to Sit out season"
Right, and correctly addressed, but that one season in 2008 isn't meaningless. I don't think Johnson is quite as dominant year-to-year as others do, but he was the best receiver in football in 2008, and if I remember correctly, he was pretty highly rated in 2004 as well.
In 08, Andre Johnson was targeted 170 times, and had 8 tds. How would that make him the best wr in football in your eyes considering he had 115 catches?
But EVERY year, Johnson rates above Brandon Marshall. This is because he's better in every way, shape, and form. Like Marshall, he sees a crap ton of targets. And he does a lot more with them.
Last year Johnson was targeted 171 times (17 MORE times than Marshall) but had the exact same amount of catches...101. Johnson had an average of 59.06% receptions per target. Marshall's average was 65.58%. Also, Johnson had 9 tds last year and Marshall had 10. So again, sorry to say, you are wrong.
It is widely known that Andre Johnson is the best WR in the game, and that's not just fans opinion, that's NFL personel opinion. Yet Johnson only averages 13.5 yards per reception, and he's never had a 10 td season. In fact, he has 42 tds in 102 career starts. That's a TD every 2.43 starts, while Marshall has 25 tds in 45 career starts and that's an average of a TD every 1.8 starts.
So I don't think he's less great because he sometimes rates lower in some years. I think Marshall is mediocre because he's very consistently in the middle of the pack despite having the most opportunities. There is no longer any question who Brandon Marshall is.
Obviously the stats you use to rank WR's are not correct. I seriously doubt someone that is "middle of the pack" like you suggest gets a 5 year 50 million contract as well. That just doesn't add up.

Yes I do, I just hold no value in it. I've already pointed out holes.

Look at it this way, here are Johnson's last 2 seasons:
08- Targets, 170, 115 rec, 1575 yds, 13.7 YPC, 8 td.
09- targets, 171, 101 rec, 1569 yds, 15.5 ypc, 9 tds.

How are those two seasons so vastly different in terms of value?

I will not argue his maturity level, but that doesn't make him any less effective on the field. I think you are ranking him so low because of your distain for his attitude.
There's no hole dude, Marshall is more explosive than Wes Welker. He, in a similar role, proved to be a bit more dangerous after the catch than Welker. Welker also catches a higher % of the passes thrown to him and converts more first downs than Marshall. He's a better player than Marshall, who I believe was more explosive as demonstrated by yards per catch.

And I still don't know where Wes Welker would rank in NFL receiver hierarchy. He's the best player in the history of the slot receiver position, but that's not exactly a premium position -- it's usually the most replaceable receiver. You can only put a corner on that spot by being in a 5 DB package, and usually, that corner is a reserve with little help. It's a tough position for a defense to take away, which is why so many guys are so successful there (though none as successful as Welker). Heck, Randle El had two GREAT years in the slot for us, but we figured we could do better than him.

Marshall had his best year in 2009, by most measures (TD's and TD per pass particularly), so while you bring a good point that Shanahan used him as more of an explosive downfield player than McD did, I could argue that McDaniels used him to the best of his abilities. And then, with Eddie Royal in the fold, that was deemed to be a fairly replaceable contribution.

You are correct on the explosive vs. effective thing, but Marshall has never been really effective in his career. He was used differently under two different coaches, with a similar aggregate result.

Catches aren't anyone's idea of a value stat, see: Mike Furrey, 2006. Or for some more circular logic, any Brandon Marshall season. Yards per touch is a lot better for a value metric: yards are necessarily contested at least, unlike catches. But yards per touch is just yards per catch (which we've been using) without rushing attempts. At that point, you're combining things just to combine things to change results.

That just doesn't add up.
You're difficult to argue with because you attack a bunch of different evidences provided for my point with no actual semblance of a counter argument. You also started out with a bunch of incorrect premises (including, but not limited to, a "knowledge" of the Broncos offense you proved not to have).

You have one common strategy: discredit what I am saying because I don't agree with you. Problem is, I don't even think you comprehend what I am saying. Either that, or you know I am right, and want to be argumentative anyway. Wouldn't be the first time.

Marshall's catch rate WAS a lot higher last year. This, of course, was a product of his role. Or at least about half of it was. Marshall did have, by his standards, a pretty nice year last year. Johnson I think was down a little from his career expectation (but still dominant -- and above Marshall). Marshall, for the first time in his career, was more efficient at turning targets into touchdowns. The difference, ironically, is almost exclusively a product of the Redskins blowing multiple coverages giving him two of his three "long" TDs of the season. Marshall usually isn't that open downfield, I can assure you (not to disparage the quality of those routes, but the Redskins blew a lot of long coverages last year...they simply weren't good back there).

Anyway, those are the facts of the situation. And we already pointed out above that when receivers are getting 150-175 targets in a year, the difference between 12.3 yards per catch and 13.5 yards per catch is A LOT. Over 16 games, it's close to a win. If you say Johnson is the best, and we can agree that there's almost a win difference per year between them in their current roles, I can agree to that. That seems in line with the available evidence.

And I can easily name 20 current receivers more valuable than Marshall. Johnson, and many others, would be on that list.

I think you overrate Andre Johnson a little bit, he's probably not the very best receiver in football, but he's certainly in the discussion and is probably one of the most difficult matchups in all of sports. And he's proven that on the field.

Re: V. Jackson "Prepared to Sit out season"

If effectiveness assessments are based on the 10 other players on the field with him I don't know how you can put much stock in value assessments and effectively compare Vincent Jackson to Brandon Marshall or any other two players.

Personally I believe in "Plug a Player and Play™" which is a subjective measurement of a players ability to come in and play at a high "Alpha Gorilla Level™" for any team.

How are those two seasons so vastly different in terms of value?
Higher catch rate, similar yards per target, probably a bit different in role.

If you look at the sabermetrics, Johnson went from other-worldly in 2008 to merely quite good in 2009. But as you seem to have proven above, it's probably not predictive of anything. Johnson still is a threat to get 1,500 yards every year, and though his role may change by who is healthy (his role changed when Owen Daniels got hurt -- probably for the worst), I see no reason to think that Johnson isn't one of the five best receivers in football for the next four years.

Also, as you argued for Marshall (incorrectly), defenses probably were out to make sure that Johnson doesn't beat them as decisively as he did in 2008. You could argue that his 2009 season was even MORE impressive than 2008. However, it wasn't more valuable, at least on those 170 plays that show up in the statistics.

I figured that people already know that the Broncos passing offense is blown away by the Chargers. When you look at mediocre passing offenses, look no further than the Broncos from 2006-2009. When you want to look at the best in the league over the same timeframe, look no further than the Chargers.

Of course, people will always look at the quarterback and the offensive line and the coaching staff before looking at WR no. 1, as rightly they should. But that doesn't mean that there isn't enough difference to go around here. The Chargers have proven better at nearly every offensive position than the Broncos since 2006, with a possible exception to the offensive line.

I think the Chargers OL has been underrated, but the Broncos --save 2009-- has been one of the best.

wow...I think you are on an island with that one buddy.
Heck, Randle El had two GREAT years in the slot for us, but we figured we could do better than him.
Umm, what?????? I don't know what to say to that. I obviously believe you are waaaay off with your first statement cause everyone realizes that Welker is more explosive, but at least you have an opinion you are firm about...but this is borderline lunacy. Not only did you use the word "great", you capitalized it!!!! This is a guy that averaged ONLY 46.5 catches, 550.5 yards over 4 years, and had ONLY 8 tds (average of 2 a year). So I am morbidly curious to hear your explanation on this one.
You are correct on the explosive vs. effective thing, but Marshall has never been really effective in his career. He was used differently under two different coaches, with a similar aggregate result.
Yup...pro bowl.
Catches aren't anyone's idea of a value stat, see: Mike Furrey, 2006.
Sorry man, I hate to keep saying it, cause usually you offer very good comments, but wrong again. You would be correct if your sample set was only 1 year. But Marshall has 100+ catches for 3 straight seasons...something Furrey never even accomplished once. To compare the two is way off in any set or format.
Actually what I did was blow your comments out of the water. This is exactly what you said (Marshall)"never ranked in the top ten in any value statistic in any one season of his career." Well, I provided 10 times in which he was (in 4 seasons mind you), and even if you think 2 are the same, that's 8 times which I proved you wrong. Yet, you refuse to acknowledge it. That's not really my issue. I've proved my point beyond a shadow of a doubt. Still it's a matter of opinion, and you are on an extreme island in think Marshall is middle of the pack wr. I can't make myself any more clear on my comments...so I guess we will have to agree to disagree even though you have provided no proof of your opinions like I have. To each his own.

I disagree. I provided point after point to counter your points. For instance, like I said in the last post how you used an opinion of saying Marshall never made the top 10 in anything, and I refuted it (to no real comment from you).
Also, I have pointed out the exact same opinions as you in regards to Denver's offense. I find it hard to believe that you are knowledgable of football but refuse to understand that Royal underachieved last year despite being moved around. (again, this is common knowledge)
You have one common strategy: discredit what I am saying because I don't agree with you. Problem is, I don't even think you comprehend what I am saying. Either that, or you know I am right, and want to be argumentative anyway. Wouldn't be the first time.
Maybe I don't comprehend what you are saying, because your incorrect points are getting in the way. You have used a TON of opinion to prove your point, very little fact like I have. You're right, wouldn't be the first time you have done that. Clearly you want to believe what you want to believe, and that's your choice...but like I said, a medicre, or middle of the pack wr would never get a 5 year 50 million contract. Obviously the NFL agrees with me too.
Anyway, those are the facts of the situation. And we already pointed out above that when receivers are getting 150-175 targets in a year, the difference between 12.3 yards per catch and 13.5 yards per catch is A LOT. Over 16 games, it's close to a win.
I disagree that it's a win, especially when the guy that had 12.3 ypc had 1 more td. 12.3 ypc X 101 catches = 1242.3. 13.5 YPC X 101 catches = 1363.5. That's 121.2 yards per season. Or 7.575 yards per game. So you are trying to tell me (and others) that 7.5 yards a game is a win somewhere????? 7.5 yards per game is negligible.
And I can easily name 20 current receivers more valuable than Marshall. Johnson, and many others, would be on that list.
Only per your opinion, or skewed stats.
I think you overrate Andre Johnson a little bit, he's probably not the very best receiver in football, but he's certainly in the discussion and is probably one of the most difficult matchups in all of sports. And he's proven that on the field.
Maybe you're right...Fitzgerald deserves some credit too. But to put him under the top 2 or even 3 at worst is certainly off. Again, ask ANY NFL team.

When you want to look at the best in the league over the same timeframe, look no further than the Chargers.
See, this is where you go wrong, while you look at your own opinions, I tend to look at fact. You are amazingly incorrect here. 06 and 09 were the only years the Chargers had a better offense passing. Why would you say what you said if you knew what you were talking about? Clearly you did not know what you were talking about, and here is the proof:
06, Chargers 15th, Broncos 25th
07- Broncos 13th, Chargers 26th
08- Broncos 3rd, chargers 7th.
09- Chargers 5th, Broncos 15th.

Average rank for the Chargers 13.25.
Average rank for the Broncos 14.

So "the best passing offense in the league" averages a ranking of only 13.25 over 4 years, but a mediocre team averages a ranking of only .75 more?

I'm sure you will ignore this evidence as well and go about spouting your own opinions...can't stop you, but please, for once, look up stats before you spew opinions. You're better than this. How many times do I have to blatently show proof your comments are incorrect and you ignore them?

ps- if you want to look at the best in that time frame, may I suggest Saints, Colts, Cardinals for example?

From what I've heard/understand any team that is able to workout a deal and sign him can petition the NFL to have it reduced back to 3 games.

LOL...I'll see what I can do!

I did not know that.

There has to be a point where the Chargers realize they aren't getting anything in return for VJ so might as well get what you can. I don't understand why they just aren't signing him. I really think we would have a very good receiving core if we got him. Moss would slip into the slot, and be used the way he was meant to be used and we could open the whole field up for McNabb. But I certainly agree with the Skins brass at this point that they want too much. No need giving up everything for a guy that may be free a little later.

Per Adam S.:

Clock is ticking: Chargers have from Friday 4 pm to Wednesday 4 pm to trade Vincent Jackson, with him missing four games. Otherwise, 6 games

I need a log to track all my conspiracy theories, unfortunately that might only prove how silly I am. Anyway conspiracy theory #1923:

Haynesworth's ankle is fine, but we know we are trading him in a 3 way deal with Tennessee and SD, so we are keeping him off the field so he doesn't get hurt. The deal is all but done from the other week and now we just need to wait until 4pm saturday to make it so!

Re: V. Jackson "Prepared to Sit out season"

As for Shanahan's comment about trading for a suspended player:
Rich_Campbell

Shanahan on trading for a suspended player, like Vincent Jackson: Obviously you would want a guy that could come in and help you right away. 1 minute ago via twidroid
you figure, if we make the trade, and he can practice with the team following the 4th week, which is effectively only two games since even if an eligible player signed today, I doubt that they would be able to start Sunday. So that's not too much of a stretch to get him signed. As for the Vikings, well Sydney Rice could come back in the 6th week, possibly, so why spend mega dollars when their known star could possibly be back a couple weeks later.

Did I have enough ifs, and possiblies, in that thought?

I wonder what San Diego is asking for? I really have no clue what the fair market value for this guy is right now?

A win-win for everyone. Another scenario would be for a three-way trade with the Texans, as they play the 4-3 and could use a Haynesworth-type in their defense.

Ok, I'll be the village idiot.... why do we have to wait till 4 pm Saturday? Why not just go ahead and get it done now? I mean the Chargers have from what?.... Wed of this week to Fri of next to get something done or he serves a full 7 games suspension? What is the significance of Saturday?

I stand corrected.... they have till next Wed. to trade him.
San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson's suspension has been reduced to four games, according to the NFL, if he is traded by next Wednesday.[/QUOTE]

I still don't see why we wait till Sat.?
