I don't hate the guy, but pretending he's on the cusp of greatness is just insane. He's an average QB, better suited as a backup at this point.[/quote]

Also, having any Rex Grossman debate at this point is pretty pointless. He has lost his shot at becoming at best a game manager. The team has moved on to Beck and so should the fans.

Pointless up until Sun. and if Beck comes out and plays no better then it's no longer pointless. I'll tell you what, most likely I'll be here while watching the game or what ever game thread for the day they have here. "IF" Beck lights it up and is 100% better I'll be the first to say "touche', I was definitly wrong." However my arguement is not about which QB is better as it is more Beck will not do any better based off of our receivers and what their not getting done.

I think we will move the ball better with Beck, but we now have issues with the O line, which makes the move to Beck even more sound. Who knows, he may surprise us and be an effective QB.

I think Beck will give us a much better shot at 8-8 than Rex in a heart beat. Rex isn't inconsistent anymore, he is consistently BAD now. I just hope Hightower is in good shape, so we can run the ball more against Carolina. They have a crappy run defense.

At least Beck is mobile. All the Eagles had to do was stack the box and force Rexy to throw the ball. As soon as he started getting pressured, he crumbled. At least with Beck, he can take off and run or buy time for receivers to get open. He gives us a much better chance to win than Rexy. Thank God we only signed Rexy to a one year deal lol

I don't think people are dismissing any evidence. Instead it's the evidence that has us convinced that he sucks. He doesn't suck because of what he did in that one game, hell, even Brady had a 4 INT game this season. He sucks because he has always sucked. He fooled us into thinking that he had matured as a passer, and had grown as a QB, and cut out some of the boneheaded mistakes, that costs his team games in Chicago, but he hasn't.

Now some people say "What he did in Chicago doesn't matter". BULLSHIT!!

Imagine the following: There is a man that has just gotten out of jail, after serving 25 years for multiple murders. The community is divided. Side A is protesting on his front lawn. They are saying "He's a murderer, lock his ass back up". Side B, his supporters, are saying "He served his time, give him another chance to be a productive member of society". Now, side A has clearly judged this man prematurely, he could very well have turned his life around, found Jesus in a water stain, or any other manner of redemption. It's logical to be cautious around this man because of his past, but it's not fair to assume that he is going to hurt someone, or something. But then...dun dun dun!!! He kills again. There is no question that we need to put his ass under the prison, and never look back.

This murderer is Rex Grossman, except he doesn't kill people, he kills drives; and he's been doing it for as far back as I can remember. We all hoped that he'd turned over a new leaf. We saw him with his Bible (Playbook), he was saying all the right things, and doing all the right things. Even had an endorsement from the man upstairs (Kyle Shanahan, see what I did there?) but there was something under the surface there, where you could just tell that it was only a matter of time before he killed again. None of us wished this, we just saw it coming. What I don't understand is how many more drives half to die at his hands before the rest of you are convinced.

Please forgive the long, drawn out, serial killer metaphor. But you gotta admit, it was pretty damn good. I don't have the energy to keep it up.

For him that was a great game but it wasn't a "Great" game by otehr qb standards. Just a game to be happy with.

21-34 for 61.8% 305yds 2td's and a fumble........i'd take that all day with Rex and about any other qb we have had in the past 15 years. So, maybe it is great........lol

Re: John Beck Era Begins

Right now we have a good defense and a offense that can run the ball. We have a QB problem and Rex or Beck have to step up and manage the game. We understand that our passing game will not be throwing for 400 yards but 250-275 yards a game is not to much to ask for from a NFL QB. We need a balanced attacked to keep the opposing defenses honest. The NFL is a passing league now and points come in the passing game. The problem is we dont have a elite QB thus this limits our offense from scoring points. You get big plays when you can get the ball down field which means you have a o-line who can protect your QB. This season our o-line is better but now we have 3 new starters playing this week. We have a new QB getting his 1st start since 2007 so how will Beck handle the pressure on the road ? This will be a big test for our team because the Panthers are hungry for a win and we have a offense that has struggle to put points on the score board. This is John Becks time time to find out if he has the makings of being a NFL starting QB or just a backup clip board holding scub. Its put up or shut up time starting Sunday or else cause we cannot wait to draft a rookie QB to take your spot. GL Beck I will be watching your every move. HTTR

With all do respect, does it really matter who our QB is this year? Yes, rex was awful and single handedly lost the philly game for is. Im glad beck will start, simply to give me more
Of an optimistic outlook for the rest of the season. But if anybody doesnt realize rex or beck were nothing more than a stop gap then you arent paying attention. We passed QB after QB up last year due to all mediocrity. This season is the, "Year of the QB" shanny saw this coming and will draft our future with building blocks behind him. It does matter because continuing with Rex would cause the team as a whole to decline. If Beck plays better then we at least keep the team intact (continuity) until we get the "future QB" on the field.

Everyone here knows what we had with Rex going in and we also recognize that Beck may fall flat. But, Beck may also emerge. Altho rare, it would not be the first time a guy like Beck surprises.

To the guy who Rex BEAT OUT to win the job against? I remember that last preseason game with Beck where he threw into traffic and made some very bad decisions.

Hopefully, we can all agree that the best thing that could happen is for John beck to be successful as our starting QB. I have not been a Beck supporter but I have also been wrong before about people. It would be a pleasure for me to be wrong about John Beck.

If Beck is able to do a good job as our QB, it won't prevent the Skins from drafting a QB of the future, rather it will reduce the pressure to play that young QB before he is ready.

Let's all hope for two other things, as well, to help him succeed:

1. Let's hope that the Shanahan's will find a way to get the running game going and use it effectively.

2. Let's also hope that, when we pass, Kyle Shanahan will call plays that take advantage of both the running game, such as play action, and John Beck's strengths as a QB, such as roll outs.

I'm excited to see what happens on Sunday.

Ummm. Yes, and according to Shanahan, it seems Beck is beating out Grossman these days...

Grossman beat out Beck for the starting job at the conclusion of training camp, which means Beck has been getting scout team reps the last six weeks. But despite that, Shananan seems to feel as though Beck has come along in the last month and a half to warrant a change.

...when Shanahan was asked if he believes the 30 year old Beck could be the answer at the position for the present and the future, his answer was pretty simple.

"I don't think there's any question about it."

Now come on. What is Shanny going to say?

He's in the position to say the same thing he said of Grossman. He (Beck) will be evaluated by wins and losses. He stands to lose zero credibility if he says that but, he stated that he feels Beck can lead this team now and in the future. That tells me that he sees something in Beck.

I think he was hoping Grossman would somehow just play more good Rex than Bad Rex. I think he honestly had faith in Rex but it was obvious that Rex was quickly falling back into his funk.

The fact that he is pulling Rex so soon in the season tells me he recognised his mistake sooner than later. He has also said from the start that he feels both Rex and Beck could lead the Redskins so I don't see him having to say he has no faith in Beck. He has stood behind Beck from the beginning and still does.

Now what it really comes down to is, do we have faith in Shanahan...

Re: John Beck Era Begins

I see three different scenarios:

1) John Beck is amazing. He becomes Drew Brees, and is a Pro Bowl QB, takes us to playoffs and beyond. Great news for us because we don't draft a QB and instead use our 1st round pick for other needs (OL,LB,WR,?CB).

2) John Beck really sucks. We lose most of the rest of our games, Rex comes back in by week 12. Our season is over -- BUT, good news is we may be able to draft a top 10 first round QB of the future. Still good news for us.

3) MOST LIKELY SCENARIO: John Beck is average. Given our defense, he keeps us in games & doesn't turn the ball over like Rex. However, we lose some close ones and we end up 8-8. Draft around 15 or so. Unfortunately, this is the most likely scenario and least beneficial for us. Slightly worse draft pick and uncertain future. Bet we still draft QB in this scenario, but we are now drafting the 4-5th best QB off the board.

Hoping for option #1. If Beck is great, it obviously helps our team -- but it more importantly allows us to use our high draft picks next year on other positions of need.

I thought Beck played ok but the INT near the end of the game was a killer. You just cant make that throw with a chance to still win the game. Beck played decent enough to win but as I expected it was similar to Rex. It was the D that killed this team today.

That int was on hankerson. He had no idea what route to run, so he ran a go route. Beck was clearly expecting him to turn around and come back towards the sideline. That's on Hank for not knowing the playbook.

Hankerson's on Twitter bitching and moaning about the INT. Saying people should stop blaming him if they weren't in the huddle. I'm like, dude save it.

Anywho, after he settled down Beck had a solid game. Hopefully he get's more comfortable in the system and finds his grove.

But I counted at least three or four plays where Rex would have either taken a sack or thrown an int. The guy has some nice wheels.

Bullee DAT. Beck's mobility is way better than Grossman's. After the sack/strip, Beck really settled down and was able to sense the pressure better.

Yes. Beck was not bad but he was not great: he missed open receivers, threw into double coverage, and was lucky not to have some balls picked (the actual INT was not his fault).

We have low standards if we think that Beck was really good.

Re: John Beck Era Begins

Right now we need a game manager. The way the rushing game started out, it looked promising. Beck just needed to hang in there and not make too many mistakes, give the ball to the running back, and not make stupid throws. Like it or not, our defense let us down today. How many drives of the Panthers started inside their own 10? Beck doesnt have the stature to win games for us, at least not yet. He does have what it takes to manage a steady game into victory. Recievers need to catch and our defensive backfield needs to wake the hell up.

I'd give him the ambiguous grade of needs improvement. But, as I see it, there is room for some hope. If he fails as a starter, then he'd be a good backup for us at least.

The Goat 10-24-2011 01:41 AM

Re: John Beck Era Begins

I think Beck did well considering circumstances...and by circumstances I mostly mean play-calling, dropped passes, some poor route running and a generally underwhelming WR corp. In the 1st half Kyle called a good deal of running plays, which was smart. It got the o-line rolling and Hightower was racking up the yards. The sporadic pass plays didn't give Beck an opportunity to get into rhythm, and since it was his first pro start since 2007 I'm sure he'll need to feel in a rhythm for awhile at least to be effective.

In the 2nd half Kyle went away from the run, which helped Beck out and showed everyone the guy is capable of managing the game and minimizing mistakes and turnovers (compared to Rex) but I think Kyle had the wrong strategy. We should have run the effing ball down their throat and controlled the clock i.e. slowed the game down. It's sort of gotten ridiculous how little opportunity Helu gets.

So yeah my impression is Beck will be good enough to win once he gets comfortable and if we start pounding the rock. I don't trust Kyle to do this. I'm wishing more than anything Mike would take over the offense at this point. It's stupid to say Kyle would have more success if we had the right personnel to fit his scheme, because we don't. We don't have a top tier WR and QB, let along one of either. Pound the rock and stop effing around.

And obviously the defense needs to show up for Beck's performance to matter at all.
