I prefer non fiction and just ordered the Seal Team Six suggestion and Destiny of the Republic (which i heard was amazing) from amazon.

This what I read in the last 6-8 months thought was pretty decent:

I actually thought they did a decent job with the movie; oddly enough when I read it back in '07 or '08 I pictured Viggo Mortensen(sp?) as the lead for whatever reason.

Now I really can't wait to see where the show goes from here. Season 3 could be totally insane.

Yeah, McCarthy is one nihilistic author hehe. I just caught the Sunset Limited flick and then read the book... good stuff.

BUMP!

I'm just finishing up Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. I bought it on a whim to avoid buying Shades of Grey (I'm one woman who's not giving into the trend without a fight!) And it's actually a very good piece of historical fiction. Factually accurate and yet somehow managed to fit vampires into the life and times of Old Abe. It's also way more graphically violent than I thought it would be. I was surprised to find myself as engrossed in it as I am.

Before that I read Tina Fey's autobiography, Bossypants. Incredibly hilarious if you like her style of humor.

His best for me was Survivor, then probably Choke and Fight Club. I couldn't get more than five pages into pygmy because of the writing style.

I'm not excited for the movie at all. I just feel like it's going to be ridiculous but people are already crapping on it because they think it's some manufactured Hollywood crap going on the popular vampire theme and no one realizes its actually a book.

I am in the middle of The Game Of Thrones, I have been watching the series on HBO, but the books add more detail than what HBO can offer in 1 hour. I like the series and the book. I do not think in this case that one form of media is better than the other but rather they complement each other...

Bossypants was wicked funny in parts! On the other hand I don't think Fey's work at SNL was very good :twocents:

I'm reading <The Universe in a Single Atom> by the Dalai Lama. It is a very intelligent and interesting read about the interface between science and religion (especially, unsurprisingly, Tibetan Buddhism). The Dalai Lama avoids the common simplistic mistakes of seeing an unbridgeable gap between science and religion or, on the other hand, collapsing the two. If you are interested in religion and science, it is a great read.

I read about halfway through this book that I found at a small thrift store before I realized I didn't like the author at all. Personally I felt like this book was garbage, and the author (though honest) really doesn't have any business writing a book at all, even if the book is just a collection of his daily blog posts. He talks about how as a journalist in the Army, he spent most of his days poolside at Saddam's former palace in the Green Zone, and he's also very critical of those around him and you can tell he really thinks highly of himself.

It might be a honest account of what his time in Iraq was like, but I'd much rather read authentic war stories about the sacrifices soldiers had to make instead of reading about a "journalist" drinking and catching a tan while he's at "war." According to the 1 star reviews on Amazon (a couple written by soldiers who actually knew him apparently) he went to Iraq as a Specialist, got demoted to PFC while he was there, and then left the Army as a Private later. If that is true I would not be suprised. Either way, don't waste your money on this book.

* I didnt want to bump the old spygate thread, but mods please do so if you think thats the more appropriate place.

I heard this interview with steve Czaban this morning:

Bryan O’Leary – Spygate the Untold Story | Yahoo Sports Radio

I never really thought too much about SpyGate, it just seemed that it wasnt all that impactful to the Patriots' success. I think this book is supposed to challenge that notion and also call into question if the NFL made a hard push to bury the matter (or certain aspects of it) as much as possible.

The interview is worth listening to, and the book definitely sounds interesting. Im not a big book reader but some of you might find it worth checking out.

Just read that book the other day, it was a very good read about a Seal who's entire team got wiped out in Afghanistan (and the backup squad that was sent had their helicopter shot down as well) and how he had to survive in a Taliban stronghold for around 5 days. He managed to survive because a local Pashtun tribe took him in and cared for him before they were able to arrange for the US to get him.

The news and the left would not shut the F up when we went into Iraq and was more concerned about making Bush look bad then the lives of our military. Now the left and media have a problem with this book on an event that's over. If it does give out strategy info he should not have done the book and I agree with you.

I'll second that. Sure I want to hear about the raid that killed Bin Laden, but not at the expense of anything that could put the lives of Seals in jeopardy.

I would also recommend, "City of Thieves".

It's written by Benioff (does some Game of Thrones screen play stuff).

He was interviewing his Grandfather for stories of besieged Leningrad during WWII, and he kept implying to him that he wouldnt be able to portray his story accurate enough or well enough to do it justice.

His Grandfather replied, "well... you're a story teller... write what you want and make up the rest".

Great book.

Perhaps the day reminds me, but I have been meaning to for some time. I need a suggestion for a non-fiction account of the Revolutionary War. I read mostly novels but get off the wagon occasionally for the "non". I do not do well with tedious or text book style research material. If you have a recommendation. recently read chuck palahniuk's Diary, Pygmy and Survivor.
also finally finished reading the first Game of Thrones book . .

about 100 pages into the Godfather .. amazing how the movie is exactly like the book. puzo doesnt get enough credit for being the creator/mind behind the story, all coppolla had to do was follow the book exactly.

it is a really good read. found it at my parent's house. the edition is probably 40+ years old, yellow brittle pages and failing apart.
