Re: And with the 6th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the redskins select...........
Knowing how the NFL works, Mike Shanahan is no doubt aware that he will likely be fired if the Redskins do not improve significantly in the win column next season. Now he faces the dilemma of the Coach/GM. As GM, he's building a team but he's not in a position where he can start a rookie QB because, as HC, he'll be fired if he has a poor season in 2012.
Basically, he messed up by not drafting his Franchise QB candidate before now. Now, the answer is probably going to be acquiring a good young QB with NFL experience or a stopgap veteran, either through FA or trade. Shanahan is definitely scrambling to get a QB. We'll see what happens next. |
Personally I don't buy that Manning will force the Colts hand and prevent them from drafting Luck but we'll see. And I don't think Luck or RGIII are the only viable solutions at QB either.
Me either. Manning has no leverage whatsoever. He's under contract and really can't say shit about what the team does. All he could do is request a trade or be cut and that's about it. The team doesn't have to oblige him in any way, and really shouldn't if they were smart. |
Re: And with the 6th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the redskins select...........
A couple of little points:
Blackmon is a TO-Boldin type of WR, I wouldn't mind having him, but at the end of the day I think he will be gone And more importantly we will address whats more important to us, QB. I think that with all this talk about Luck and "Oh we could get him possibly if..." He's going to Indy. Why do people assume that he and Peyton cant and dont want to play together? It's all assumption that I think some one brought up as a possibility which snowballed. And while we're on Luck, my neighbor whose a huge skins fan emailed one of those NFL draft guys and asked him if he'd give up 3 first rounders for Luck if he were the Redskins. The guy said he'd probably give up 4... I also think we should draft Kellen Moore. I feel like regardless of who we get, we draft and develop Moore, and with his knowledge, he could be a great backup that when he gets into games he could be a lot like...Matt Flynn, and possibly help us in terms of trade value down the road, like Flynn could help the packers should they franchise him instead of Finley. Also, That stanford Ok st game had a LOT of pro prospects playing. DeCastro, like I said in the other thread, is said to be the best guard since steve hutchinson. Sadly I love Chester and Lichtensteiger as our guards, however, IF Korey is fully healthy, AND we aren't completely sold on Montgomery, we should definitely take a long look at DeCastro as our new LG and Licten as our C. And Johnathan Martin stanford OT is someone who could be linked to us, not that we get him, but for the fact that we trade our pick to St. Louis for maybe Bradford and they get Griffin at 2 and Martin at 6. |
Newsflash...their defense has always been very talent-poor. Due to the stud ends who kept them competitive and the fact that teams had to play from behind so much they were able to hide the fact that their defense was mostly junk for the last decade.
C'mon dude.
Isn't talent poor and 'stud ends' in the same sentence the definition of contradiction? Anyway, did you even read what I wrote before you posted a knee jerk reaction? Freeny, Mathis, Bethea, Angerer= talent poor? |

"Mike Shanahan has built a good offensive line and defense in Washington—now he needs his quarterback. In the past, Shanahan has targeted athletic quarterbacks who can get outside the pocket and make plays. He likes players who aren’t afraid to take chances but have the accuracy to pick apart a defense underneath. John Elway and Jay Cutler are his type of players." |

Since all of our desired players in the first round will be picked by the time the skins pick at #6, I'm hoping management is smart enough to trade down and pick one of these 2 guys. Our OL would be transformed over night with either.

I love DeCastro!! He's a stud, one of the best G to come out in long time. Martin is also an excellent T, as good as Kalil in my opinion. Stanford's OL controlled the running game and passing game against an excellent OKS team, those guys are hogs. |
Re: And with the 6th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the redskins select...........
Don't agree with him being as good as Kalil, Kalil is a once every 5 years kind of tackle, Martins a Russell Okung (Hey remember him!) clone. Levy Adock from OKSU looked like a NFL RT in my opinion..should be someone to consider.

I know. Ridiculous. Draft a RB that high when he can push you over the top. Skins have way too many other needs. RBs have a short shelf life. The Bengals want him though, so we should deal the pick to them if we can't get RGIII at 6 or we address QB in free agency or via trade. Especially if we can grab a #1 WR in free agency. |

well, there's also bowe, wayne, wallace, colston (i believe)... plenty of WR talent this year. and if barkley left we'd be in the perfect spot to get our QB too. things broke badly for us. oh well. |

Completely disagree. Think of his first two offseasons- the first is an uncapped year with very little available as far as free agents, and a draft that had Sam Bradford and not much else for QB's. This past offseason was a labor stoppage and a draft that had some reaches at QB in the 1st round. Sure it sucks that we have to wait until season 3 of Shanahan to get our potential franchise QB moving forward, but what good does it do to fire Shanahan if he's not a 10 win coach in his first year with his new (and likely rookie) QB? |

I disagree. I think he has to bring in a qb(s) this year for sure but I can't see Snyder treating MS like Del Rio. Most owners know that a rookie qb needs time to adapt and won't off a coach for a bad year with one unless the rookie qb plays like Ryan Leaf or well Blaine gabbert. |

Goes back to my interpretation of the 'plan'.. 2010 he didn't do anything to build longterm so I'm not considering that in the 'rebuild'.. 2011 was lockout shortened/impacted but he worked exclusively on rebuilding the defense in the draft and free agency. 2012 will be focused on rebuilding the offense in free agency and the draft. |

I've argued that the first season shouldn't even be considered under evaluation, because Shanahan wanted to simply evaluate the players who were already on the team. He brought in new players in positions where it was obvious that the 'skins needed help, but other than that, he truly didn't know what type of team he was inheriting. The true start of purge and rebuild didn't start until last offseason, but a lot of that was hampered by the lockout. So, this will be the first complete offseason in which Mike Shanahan and the rest of the coaching staff can execute their offseason plans without any road blocks. So, with that being said, it MAY not be necessary for the Redskins to give up a lot to secure another QB for next season. Don't get me wrong, the Redskins NEED a QB, but they also need to stick with the plan of continuing to build the TEAM and its depth and not get caught up in drafting a QB just to be drafting a QB. I think Shanahan wants to knock it out of the park in regards to landing a franchise QB, and that might not be possible with the way THIS offseason is going to be. I would be more or less disappointed that we'd have to endure another year of Rex Grossman, but ultimately, I LOVE the idea of having a solid team built and in place for a young quarterback to come in and develop. |

Re: And with the 6th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the redskins select...........
All I'm saying about Mike Shanahan getting fired is that he is no doubt aware that it is standard operating procedure for NFL owners to fire a coach who fails to deliver a winning season in his third year as coach. It is so predictable that it ought to be in the Owner's Handbook, if there is such a thing. Why should Dan Snyder behave any differently than the other owners?
If Shanahan, the HC, fails to deliver a winning season in 2012 because he was breaking in a rookie QB, then DS may decide that it is the GM who should be fired for not giving Shanahan enough talent to win in his third year. The problem for Shanahan is that he is also the de facto GM. So, there is no true GM to be sacrificed so that Shanahan can keep his job. Sometimes, an owner will allow a HC to sacrifice a coordinator or two or some position coaches to buy another year. But it looks like Shanahan will clean house on coaches this offseason, so he won't be able to play that worn out card. For me, then, it is logical that the solution Shanahan will seek for the QB position in 2012 is to go with a veteran acquisition other than Grossman and draft a promising rookie to develop. Those moves and enough wins in 2012 should allow Shanahan to keep his job which is ultimately what it is all about for him. |

Which is probably why the Rams select Matt Kalil, OT, and the Redskins select.............Justin Blackmon WR!!!! ;-) Yes, not an offensive lineman, but I think if Blackmon is on the board when the Redskins pick, I'd pick him in a heartbeat. No matter who the quarterback is, Blackmon would make life A LOT easier for the Redskins. Could you picture Blackmon and a healthy and improving Hankerson at WR? Blackmon the deep threat, Hankerson who can also get open deep but a great tall possession receiver? With Gaffney and Moss coming back, and hopefully Cooley and Davis (as long as he keeps himself clean) there are going to be A LOT of scary weapons to throw to. Even Rex Grossman would look awesome with that group of weapons. Couple that with Helu and Royster out of the backfield, I'm almost getting more excited about this scenario than I am drafting a QB. |
That's an easy question. Because he can't afford to behave like Dan Snyder. Not to mention the fact that Mike Shanahan told him from the very beginning that if Dan Snyder is not willing to allow him the time it takes to rebuild this team, then he wasn't interested in coming to Washington. That he signed a contract for five seasons, and that's how long it's going to take. So, Snyder fires Shanahan after season three, he goes back on his word, the Redskins are blown up again, and we stay on this merry-go-round. Snyder at this point realizes that he has a choice: to go through growing pains for five years verses going through continuous change for another ten years. At some point, you have to realize you trust the football minds around you and you do it their way. |
