Re: A New Look Offense or the Same but Better?
Griffin III throws to Garcon in the end zone. Touchdown Washington Redskins!!!!!
|
Re: A New Look Offense or the Same but Better?
Thinking about how many times Rex missed a throw downfield, or simply didnt see the open guy and KS and MS were on the sidelines shaking their heads - meaning i think the offense doesnt change too much but we now have a QB that will make it work.
So my answer is............... the core offense/formations and playcalling balance will remain unchanged and Griffin's own ability will raise the level of execution and add more playmaking ability? |

This thread has been a chronicle of the changes to the offense throughout the offseason dealing specifically with option concepts. So of course its not gonna be everyone cup o tea and I get that. But as the offseason progressed and more information about the offense leaked out and the offense became more visible to the media/public. It seems that at the very least there will be some pistol formation, some zone-read, and some designed QB runs. So it looks like there will be some change I guess a combination of these two options from the OP: o the core offense/formations will remain unchanged but the playcalling balance will return and the offense will look more like Houston and the traditional Mike S. Denver WCO with a heavy focus on stretch running and boot-action passing? o the offense formations will change and our offense will adopt and feature some of Baylor's formations and concepts, like they way the Panthers added some of Auburns formations, plays and concepts? ...but either way I can't wait to see it |

In order to take pressure from off Griffin, the Redskins have to be able to run the football. Factor in also that the Shanahans like to use play action passes off the run. If RG3 gets 1 0n 1 coverage anywhere on the field, the offense will be able to move the ball all the way to the end zone by running the football and using play action. |

Yes. Last year with Rex though alot of that play action was spoiled with inaccuracy, a weak arm, and poor receiver play. I cant wait to see this offense take flight - might not be at a cruising altitude until next year when they sure up the line, but that line might , juts might surprise us this year - |

Actually Rex has a strong throwing arm. He can really air it out downfield, but...his deep balls usually land in the other team's arms. He just fires and hopes he hits his target. Sometimes I think he closes his eyes when launching a deep ball. If you just want a 70-yard pass, Rex is your guy. If you want a completion...depends on which Rex shows up that day. We don't get to see Good Rex as much as Bad Rex. |

Rex has an average arm really. He was constantly underthrowing receivers. Plus, people always said that Beck had the stronger arm in camp, yet everyone still preferred Grossman. Just because he's constantly going long doesn't mean he's got a great, rocket arm. |

God do they hang up - I dont think he ever hit a wr deep without the wr having to stop or come back to the ball making it in effect a jump ball...........drove me nuts - Moss, or Armstrong would have five steps on the corner and the ball just wouldnt get there. ugggh. As a matter of fact THAT is what I want to see offensively out of the Skins vs. Bills - one deep ball thrown to a wr who catches it in stride and takes it in..........a la.... Brad Johnson to Albert Connell - that is the last time I remember seeing it. lol |

Kyle/Mike have some decisions to make about whether/how much to show of the new stuff. Personally, I would err towards not showing any of the new stuff that involves Griffin running. (a) The surprise factor would be diminishesd and (b) right now the OL is kinda a mixed bad right now and some of the zone-read stuff is dependent upon good protection; don't want to see Griff take any unnecessary hits. But they could still use the run elements of the new concepts. For example they could calls some designed RB runs from the pistol and shotgun. |

He's gonna do it at some point, the teams know and I think expect that, but even at that point, whatever team he does it against is prolly gonna get burnt. Just got to show him slides of Michael Vick and newton not sliding, and teach him to do it EVERY TIME unless he is going to the house. |

RG3 is smarter than Vick and Newton - he will slide when he has to. Im as excited about the brain in this kids head as I am about his physical attributes -we are talking the whole package here folks....... |

Case in point. That terrible pass on the first play from scrimmage against the NYG in week 15 that was intercepted. Grossman has a gross deep ball. |

Yes, he's smart but he's also used to scoring TDs and winning. I hope he does learn to protect himself at the pro level. In college, he went around, past or over defenders. As Cam Newton learned from London Fletcher, that doesn't always work in the NFL. In college Griff was fearless/reckless often going through or over defenders. Newton, even at Auburn was very smart about when and where to take contact and he carried it over in the NFL. Vick on the other hand has yet to display this discretion. With Griff time will tell. |

A New Look Offense indeed.

I wonder what Donovan Mcnabb is saying now about how the Shanahans don't tailor their offense to the QBs skillset

Who?

Re: A New Look Offense or the Same but Better?
It isn't the offense that has improved. It's the players executing the offense that has been upgraded.

I beg to disagree. We saw plays that were not in Kyle's playbook a few months ago. It is more than just personnel - Kyle has flexibly changed his scheme. |
Re: A New Look Offense or the Same but Better?
Was this the first game we went without a turnover on offense in how long?

The bubble screens are basically the same as the WR screens that they've been running since 2010. I did notice the option play being ran. But they said way back in the offseason that they were going to incorporate that into their playbook. They couldn't have run plays like this last season and the season before that with McNabb, Beck, and Grossman. It took a much different kind of QB in order to incorporate those kinds of plays. So, change in personnel does have something to do with it. |

Kyle called a.....great game. The Saints D never really caught on.. |
Re: A New Look Offense or the Same but Better?
Good Start for the offense. No one had any film before today, lets put the brakes on playcalling and upgrades to personnel. Let's see how they adjust to the adjustments that the defenses they play will make against them. Nice clean game (no turnovers)against the Saints, no doubt.
|
Re: A New Look Offense or the Same but Better?
It's the more stellar defenses that will adjust to what the Redskins will do offensively. The Ravens, Steelers, and Cowboys each have the best defenses that the Redskins will face this season. But Kyle Shanahan and Griffin III will be watching film of those defenses too. It will be interesting to see how these defenses will handle RG3 and how Kyle Shanahan options to attack each one.

I didn't disagree with the idea that the change in personnel has changed the offense. Only a fool would disagree with that. However, the bubble screens are not the same as the ones we have run before because we have never, until now, run them from the pistol formation. You are seriously underselling the changes in Kyle's schemes. We had read options, sprint options, QB keepers, and bootleg options which had never before appeared in a Kyle offense. We ran these new plays A LOT. Some of these plays were straight out of the Baylor playbook. We have a brand new offensive scheme this year and anyone who says that the changes are merely in personnel is not appreciating some of the finer points of offensive strategy. Kyle is bringin' it on the chalkboard. |
